Abstinence-only: Does it work?
Statistics show that “70 percent of US teens have engaged in oral sex…and more than 45 percent have had intercourse at least once.” Today’s future generation has been involved in sexual activities more than ever. The question is, do they know what they are getting themselves into? With the deliberation on what should be taught in a sex education class, many wonder if the abstinence-only programs are working to lower the number of teens that participate in these activities? Paul Weyrich’s article “Abstinence Education Works” and Arthur Caplan’s article “Abstinence-Only Sex Ed Defies Common Sense: Education Policy Spreads Ignorance, Sends Confusing Messages to Teens” both have different viewpoints on abstinence-only sex education.
Weyrich claims that having abstinence-only education programs can prevent teen pregnancies and transmissions of sexually transmitted diseases. Research from Texas A&M, show that sex education classes that teach abstinence have significantly lowered sexual activity rates among teens. Studies show that abstinence programs are very beneficial and many ways towards teenagers. The programs teach teens to be safe, prepared, and mature about sex; as well prepare them for when they get married and have sex in the future. Weyrich finishes off strong by restating his main point: the best prevention against STDs and unplanned pregnancies is not having sex before marriage.
According to Caplan, STD’s are rapidly spreading among young people, and abstinence-only sex education classes are not needed because teens should be able to make their own decisions. He believes many people, particularly parents, are still indecisive about what should be taught in a sex education class. Others say, "My problem is with street drugs, not booze, so why does everyone tell me that I have to stop drinking? It's natural to want to strive for the moderation of our habits rather than total abstinence. I can't imagine anyone indulging in their unhealthy habit of choice and not deriving some compelling benefits. But the fact is, abstinence is substantially easier to achieve. If you doubt that, just think about all the times you were able to go on a very strict and rigid diet, or stop smoking, or abstain from alcohol, gambling or drugs -- only to find that once you started drinking occasionally, or cheating on your diet, or borrowing cigarettes, you soon ended up right back where you started. It has become a clich?, but it's still more than a good joke: "I can quit any time I want. I've done it thousands of times!" Of course, the issue of moderation is not subject to discussion when your habits involve eating, spending, or relationships. With activities like these, moderation is the only option. ...Only the Lonely Frankenstein is Mary Shelley's most notable piece of work, written when she was only eighteen years old. The novel explores the theme of loneliness and rejection. The monster created by Victor Frankenstein is rejected by human society because of his appearance. Mary Shelley explores the feelings of how the creature is utterly ignored and abused by the society. I believe the novel became a reflection of the inner state of Mary Shelly. It reflects sufferings and loses that occurred in the own authors life. As notes Anthony Badalamenti in his article Why did Mary Shelley Write Frankenstein: “She was also the product of her own past, suffering three successive losses in her early life that reveal why themes of being alone and abandoned run through the novel”(Badalamenti, 431). All these sad events and constant feeling of loneliness helped Mary to create a very deep and powerful character. Victor does not think about possible results of his experiments. ...Failure of Abstinence-Only Programs Sex education is important, but many students finish sex education classes with a distorted view of sexuality and without a good understanding of contraception and safe-sex practices. Instead, children only learn that they should not have sex until they are married. Abstinence-only programs in public schools have become popular because of a law giving millions of dollars to schools that teach the programs. These programs have the good intention of persuading young people to wait until marriage before having sex, but abstinence-only programs are not achieving this goal and are flawed by the distorted and biased perspective that they promote. In 1996, the United States government passed a law giving funding to states that offered abstinence-only programs in public schools. Since this time, over half of a billion dollars has been given to states to promote abstinence-only programs (Brody). To receive the money, schools must agree to follow a set of rules. The rules indicate that a school’s abstinence-only program must have "as its exclusive purpose teaching the social, psychological, and health gains to be realized by abstaining from sexual activity" ("Impacts"). Students must be taught that they are likely to suffer harmful effects if they have sex before marriage. Prenatal exposure to legal and illegal psychoactive substances can generate physiological and/or neurobehavioral difficulties in the newborn that can initiate complications with feeding, sleeping, movement, and in general poor neonatal adaption process (2). Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) refers to the collection clinical signs correlated with opioid withdrawal that usually manifests as neurological excitability, gastrointestinal dysfunction, and autonomic over reactivity (3). Throughout the past decade, there has been rising public health, medical, and political devotion disbursed to the parallel growth in two developments: an escalation in the prevalence of prescription opioid abuse and an escalation in the incidence of NAS. The diagnosis of NAS has increased from 1.20 births 1,000 hospitals births in 2009 to 3.39 births per 1,000 hospitals births in 2009. The Only One

...In the Bible, Christ’s resurrection is explored after his death, leading into resurrection. Events that lead to his demise lead to his return in the real world, bringing a new and insightful light to the story. The significance of Christ being able to self-resurrect back into the world is because he’s the only one to ever do it, and do it successfully, whereas other Gods don’t have the ability to do so. ...on the language I am using the most to get me through the day. Were as if I were required to speak and use French only I would be forced to become more familiar with French ultimately using it fluently. This is the point of many state debates about English-only. Many states have educated students from different countries with a bilingual approach for many years. They have been taught in their native language for a majority of their school day and have been learning English as a second language. How can we expect students to learn a language that they are not required to use or understand for the majority of their school day?
