Restoring Reputation and Repairing Legitimacy: a Case Study of Impression Management in Response to a Major Risk Event at Allied Irish Banks Plc

...impressions of external actors in this way is a means of re-establishing the legitimacy and reputation of the organisation (see for example Deegan and Rankin, 1997; O’Donovan, 2002). There has, however, been limited prior research examining bank risk disclosures (Linsley and Shrives, 2006) and none of these previous studies analyse bank annual report disclosures issued in response to a major risk incident. This paper addresses this gap in the literature through examining relevant discretionary disclosures published by Allied Irish Banks plc (AIB) following the discovery of a major fraud at its USA subsidiary, Allfirst, in 2002. The fraud was widely reported at the time of its occurrence and caused considerable harm to the reputation of AIB. The structure of the remainder of the paper is as follows. Section 2 discusses legitimacy theory and the strategies that may be used to repair legitimacy following an adverse event. The background to the AIB fraud is examined in Section 3 and key findings of the investigation into the fraud are also reported in this section. Section 4 analyses disclosures in AIB’s 2001 annual report, focusing upon the strategies adopted to restore legitimacy, and Section 5 discusses the outcomes of this analysis. The final section draws conclusions.
