Midwives must care for women using evidence based practice; research is essential in guiding practice and developing knowledge. My chosen topic is the use of water for labouring and/or birthing. The level of interest and enquiry of the subject I’ve witnessed on placement and my own personal experience fuelled my professional interest. This assignment will critique 7 of the 20 articles using a critical analysis tool. CINAHL and Cochrane databases were used to for the search.

This article was written by a birth centre midwife, suggesting a vested interest in supporting waterbirth. It was published in the British Journal of Midwifery with midwives and student midwives being the intended audience.
The article’s main focus compares the benefits of using a birth pool to labour against the benefits of remaining in the pool to give birth, including an assessment of women’s’ pain perception and analgesia, estimated blood loss and perineal trauma incidence after using water in labour and/or birth.

...Article Review HRM 599-Benefits The article I have researched for this article review was written according to the New York Times was about “how a small business owners have problems with unemployment claims and one owner who was surprised when an unemployment claim came across her desk by an employee who had quit more than a year before (Mount, 2011)”. Her company who had hired the employee after the employee’s company had went out of business then that owner rehired the employee after his business became booming again then he went out of business which left that employee unemployed so the owner of the company was responsible for the unemployment claim. Since the owner’s account was put into deficit that threatened her unemployment insurance tax rate even though the employee had voluntarily left her company. The owner felt that this claim shouldn’t be right and that she would be afraid to hire anyone else. Another employer unknowing of the law hired and then fired an employee without proper documentation leading to the employee obtaining unemployment benefits in which they learned their lesson and had no trouble since they filed the proper documentation. In short, how long or hard are humans willing to work, and how long are we willing to wait for a desired reward/result. The answer appears to be that it depends on the individual. While not a surprising result, why that is appears to be scientific. The authors conducted a study of 25 individuals. Individuals were given the option of performing a task with a higher likelihood of completion but lower possible award. As well, participants were given the option of performing a task that was more difficult to complete but a higher possible award. Methodology Behind The Study For this study the AAFPRS studied a “select group of the organization’s 2,700 members to uncover the latest trends in facial plastic surgery.” Findings “The study revealed that one in three facial plastic surgeons surveyes saw an increase in requests for procedures due to patients being more self aware of looks in social media.” The members that completed the survey stated that they noted an increase of 10% during 2013 when compared to 2012 of patients getting rhinoplasty; a 7% increase in hair transplant and a 6% increase in eyelid surgery. Use of prayer and scripture in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy is a study that focuses specifically on the efficacy of the use of prayer and scripture within the Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) model. While CBT is more than 30 years old (Tan, 2007, pg. 101), it has been “expanded to include mindfulness and acceptance-based therapies” (Tan, 2007, pg. 101). It continues to go into more specific depth regarding a smoke-free campus such as the most effective way to initiate and retain a smoke-free campus. Within this pool of knowledge, it will show some of the main reasoning behind why people that smoke want to keep a campus from becoming smoke-free and will also show people urges behind wanting a campus to become smoke-free. This will give two fully biased views from both complete opposites (a smoke-free campus versus a smoking campus.) Some of the bigger issues that Cho and DeVaney wanted to evaluate the motives behind the college students. This includes the variety of thinking and learning methods, reasons behind their actions, and meanings that give the students their urges towards these actions.
