Article Summary
With online education becoming more widely accepted and available around the world, many people wonder about the differences between traditional classrooms and virtual classrooms. One difference is student participation and communication. In a traditional classroom setting, some students are able to earn credit by just attending class, not necessarily participating in class discussions. What do those types of students look like in an online environment? Does their lack of participation affect the learning process for others? How does class participation equate to student success?
With this case study, the authors sought to answer those questions exactly. More particularly, the study examined online students who fail to fully engage but are still able to show educational progress, referred to as read-only participants or ROPs (Nagel, Blignaut, & Cronje, 2009). The authors wanted to understand the connection between participation and communication and course success. They organized an eight-week online Masters course using WebCT as the learning management system (LMS). Twenty-two middle-aged students, from all over the world, participated in the course. Students were required to participate through class discussion via forum posts, group assignments, and other research. A collaboration rubric was created by the students as a group assignment and used by their peers to measure their group participation. After the course, the facilitators requested feedback from the students regarding the course. Data was collected through WebCT. The LMS tracked the number of times each student logged into the course, the number of original posts made, the number of posts made in response to other students, and the collaboration score gained from the rubric (Nagel et al., 2009). ...John Pontius MGT 3335-70 Li, Hongcai Paper 1 The article titled”Are You Too Family Friendly?” is about how non-married employees feel that they are shorted benefits that married employees receive. The number of non-married worker in the US is continuing to increase and businesses need to be aware of these employees and the benefits that they allow in their ‘family friendly’ policies. These non-married employees feel slighted that they don’t get ‘flex time’ to take the afternoon off just because they don’t have a kid or spouse to take to the doctor or whatever. It states that they feel like they have to pick up the slack for the family employee and do more work because the family employee is not there. The article also goes into the struggles of domestic partners when it comes to benefits and how this type of relationship is also becoming more popular. There are graphs and research to support the point that a new majority of employees are not families in the traditional sense. Some companies are already making adjustments to this trend with new policies and benefits definitions. The article suggests that companies need to start adjustments or face problems with these employees in the future. ...Exploring Your Desires A Summery of “On Becoming a Writer” “On Becoming a Writer” is an essay by Russell Baker, who was born in Virginia in 1925. It is an excerpt taken from the Pulitzer Prize - winning memoir Growing Up. Baker shares his inspirational story and reminds students and young adults not to be afraid to explore their desires. The excerpt centers around the pivotal moment, when Baker explores his desires and realizes that he wants to be a writer. In the first part of the story, Baker describes how writing interested him, but there were so many other unattractive things about English. He talked about how boring Grammar was and that writing papers were like a chore and robotic. He even said that reading the classics were “deadening as chloroform” (Baker, 1982). Baker touches on a good point in this section. School, for a lot of students, ends up being dull and repetitious due to boring subject matter. When teachers put a little thought and effort into the subject matter and allow students to be creative, it can make subjects more appealing and help keep students interest. Baker then takes us to his junior year, with Mr. Feagles. Baker describes Mr. Feagles as a pristine, out of touch teacher, that was “prim to a fault” (Baker, 1982). ...Article Summaries Part 2 Carrie Wilson Client Perceptions of Therapy Component Helpfulness in Group Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Anxiety Disorders. The objective of this study was to evaluate the helpfulness of group cognitive-behavioral therapy in patients with anxiety disorders. The treatment required participants to be highly motivated and willing to endure unpleasant emotional states. The treatment encouraged participants to challenge long standing maladaptive beliefs. The researchers used archival data of 48 participants who completed clinical trials at University training clinic. They recruited participants by advertising in local newspapers and by obtaining referrals from mental health professionals. Participants were required to be at least 18 years old and were varied in relation to sex, race and marital status. After an interview, participants were involved in a feedback session. There were a total of twelve weekly therapy sessions. They used several different approaches to measure their findings. One was the ADIS-IV Diagnostic interview. There was also a therapy helpfulness questionnaire and a treatment credibility scale. They concluded that individuals with social phobia seems to benefit the most from CBT. The young man is a caretaker of an old man who is really old and has a diseased eye. In “The Tell-Tale Heart” the young man starts out by loving the old man very deeply. He takes care of his every need, until one day “ the old man’s eye fell upon him and his blood ran cold”(Poe 2). The young man then turned to his narcissistic ways and it changed the way he felt about the old man whom “he loved so dearly” (Poe 1). In “ Explanation of: ‘The Tell-Tale Heart’ by Edgar Alan Poe,” which was rewritten by an unknown author, it explains how the narrator is a “paranoid schizophrenic”(pg. 1). The article explains how Edgar Alan Poe was obsessed with “death, madness, and troubled human relationships” (pg. 1). The narrator is definitely a man caught between normality and psychopath. Further more the young man goes on to “spy on the old man every night for a week” (Poe 3). In doing this, the young man is letting his “id” take over his thoughts and actions. Chua brings up a good point in “An overview of ‘The Tell-Tale Heart,” stating that the “old man and the young man are one in the same person” (Chua 2). According to the U.S. Department of Labor, in 2009, when President Obama signed the stimulus package into law, he promised a six percent unemployment rate by this time. Granted, a drop has been seen in the unemployment, but what the author does not seem to realize is the number of Americans who have stopped looking for work. The Department of Labor has reported an unemployment rate of 8.2 for the month of March 2012. The actual unemployment or U-6 rate as of March is hovering at 14.5 percent. Many argue that it has become so easy to gain government benefits, that looking for work is no longer a priority. The President needs to limit benefits to push people to search for work or take jobs that may not be their first choice.
