The Machinery: Build, Track and Maintain Your Network
2.1 Networking: The Machinery That Drives Business

y wife took her wrist watch to the local jeweler for repair. The store was very busy, but eventually she found her way to the glass display case with a smiling salesman behind it.

“How can I help you?” he asked. {Graphic Insertion Point} GIP_chap02_sec2-1.jpg

What an utterly brilliant question! “How can I help you?” “ What can I do for you?” “Is there some way I can be of service to you?” “ What is it that I can do to help you achieve your objectives?” Theoretically, you could read that last paragraph, study it, let it penetrate into the deepest crevices of your mind, then move on to Chapter 3 because you’ve just captured the essence of good, solid business networking! That’s right — the secret to great networking lies in what you can do to help others! But now that you know this, don't skip ahead; in fact, don't skip anything. Why? You’d be surprised how many people still cling to the belief that networking is all about “connecting with others so they can help me find a job.” Unfortunately that’s not networking, that’s spamming a fellow human being. People who do this should put themselves in the role of the spamee and consider how it might feel if the roles were reversed. Let’s just think of it as the Golden Rule of Networking and to be an effective networker, it’s a rule you must follow. What it comes down to is this: You must discover what you can do, offer, or share that ingratiates you with others and makes them genuinely look forward to your next meeting. Doing this consistently brands you as someone of interest, someone who is truly worth

knowing. As you consistently treat people in this manner, it's no accident that they look for opportunities to reciprocate. And it all starts with the “small talk," the key to…...

(IHS) in Lexington, Massachusetts, who will be in Davos. “There are definitely pockets of good news with recoveries in North America and parts of Asia gathering momentum.” U.S. economic activity picked up across much of the country last month, boosted by automobile and home sales, the Federal Reserve said on Jan. 16 in its Beige Book survey of business conditions. U.S. Effect The improvement in the U.S. is having a “positive effect throughout the world,” according to Sriram Srinivasan, chief executive officer of Wall Street Investment Management in Chantilly, Virginia, and a poll respondent. The global economy is in its best shape since May 2011, according to the survey, with 35 percent of those contacted saying it is getting better. That’s about twice the number who say the outlook is worsening. European investors were the most upbeat; U.S. respondents the least. “The positive wealth effect caused by rising stock markets creates a big global confidence boost,” Srinivasan said in an e-mail. Equity market gains are expected to be widespread. More than three-in-five surveyed......

...Name Course Professor Date Module 10 Forum World War 1 (WW1) had great impact on so many things. One major impact was the avenue it created for future wars and revolutions. This led to the cold war and World War 2. The WW1 led to the emancipation of women. Women now gained more right as compared to before the war. The World War 1 can also be stated to have led to the great depression. This is because the war cost billion of dollars and many countries that were involved either directly or indirectly were in debt and owed a lot of money. The other impact of the trench war was the fact that male dominance stopped being common and the patriarch ideals were also done away with as they become infamous. Male dominance became less famous as they had no careers after the war. Most of them could not get careers after the war as they had joined the army at a young age. The war had a great impact on the art especially the Russian revolution. Artist got new ideas and the themes of their paintings become one sided, most of the arts had revolution inspire themes. At this time, a group of artists emerged a good example of the groups was the Association of Russian Revolutionary Artist (ARRA). The ARRA got their themes from the Russian revolution. Sculptures and painting were created all showing the impact of the Russian revolution. For example, Lanser, an artist decorated the Moscow Railway station with paintings that demonstrated the work of the soviet construction. The Russian......

Forum on Tax Reform

...Forum on Tax Reform Fundamental Tax Reform: An International Perspective Abstract - This paper examines trends in tax reforms. The analysis is limited to the experience of 30 OECD countries, and focuses particularly on changes since the year 2000. The paper analyses the general trend of reductions in both tax revenues and rates and the diversity in tax policies across OECD countries, reflecting the diversity in both economic circumstances and policy objectives. Developments in tax administration are also briefly dealt with. Some of the challenges for tax policymakers and administrators that are likely to arise over the next few years are identified, and possible alternative approaches to solving them are put forward. INTRODUCTION ax reform is an ongoing process, with tax policymakers and tax administrators continually adapting their tax systems to reflect changing economic, social and political circumstances. Over the last two decades, almost all Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries have undertaken structural changes to their tax system that have significantly altered the way these systems function and their economic and social impacts.1 In some countries (for example, many of the Eastern European economies in transition), the reforms have been profound and implemented over a very short period of time. In others (most of the European countries), the reforms have been a gradual process of adaptation, but over time they have substantially......

Gbb - Forum 8

...GDB – Forum 8 Question 18.2 2. Describe the relationship between the two variables in the four plots. “Scatterplots are essential for understanding the relationships between variables. They provide a means for visual inspection of the data that a list of value for two variables cannot. Both the direction and the shape of a relationship are conveyed in a plot” (Cooper & Schindler). The x (horizontal axis) variable represents the variable that explains what we see in y (the vertical axis.) Often, x is a quantity which we can change or have control over. Or, to see how y reacts to different values of x. So x is usually called the independent or explanatory variable, and y the dependent or response variable. Another way to think about it, sometimes, is that x is used to predict y. So x is something that comes before y in time. Plot (a) seems do not have a correlation at all; there is no pattern to indicate where the data point lie. The points do not go in any particular direction; therefore this data has a correlation value of 0. No correlation occurs when there is no linear dependency between the variables. Plot (b) appears to have a positive correlation, although the data points are not very close together. Graph (b) would probably have a value of 0.3. A correlation is weaker the farther apart the points are located to one another on the line. Plot (c) You can see from the plot that these data don’t fit a straight line. There is a distinct bend......

Forum 5

...Forum #3 A major misconception about creativity is that it attributes to only generating ideas and excludes the implementation of those ideas. In undergraduate I took a Computer Aided Design (CAD) course and the final group project was to create a modeled Boeing 747. A requirement of the project was to add your own modification to the 747. Each of my teammates picked a structural part of the airplane and creatively made their own modification. If creativity is the only element being considered in the generation of the idea, then the implementation of creating the modification would be excluded. Without the implementation, our individual alteration would only have been a thought and we would have received no credit on our project. This misconception of creativity neglects the creative approach at solving problems. The creativity modification that I implemented to our 747 was adding flames to the turbines. Amabile’s definition of creativity insinuates that a significantly small percentage of the human species are creative; my lecture notes state this numver is a mere 2.5%, which I feel is absurd. This misconception would contradicts all the innovative creations that have advanced human life throughout the centuries. This measure of creativity is unreliable because as humans we are always adapting to solve problems and maintain life. If only 2.5% of humans were creative, then we as a whole would be faced with a crisis of dealing how to advance economically and maintain the...

Communication in Forums

...gender, automatically, in a normal person’s mind, they start creating all kinds of different ideas in their head on how this meeting went wrong. When you are dealing with class forums, you have to make sure to re read your post before you actually post it and be sensitive to everyone in every way possible. One of the things you can change, when talking in a forum page for classroom, is by not using the phrase, “good old boys”. That phrase is immediately looked upon by females in a bad way, instead you can refer to them as co-workers. If you say co-workers, you will not be offending anyone in any way, because it is not picking a certain gender. Another thing i would of changed is that you mentioned you would “recommend that any man who wants to advance in the business world should seriously consider brushing up on his etiquette”. Just by the word “man”, is automatically putting a gender role in the sentence and it can be looked upon in a wrong way. Lastly, another way you put a gender role on this situation is by saying you “used some of her tips at the company picnic later that month that all the managers and their wives attended”. You made it seem as there are no females attending this meeting with their husbands, therefore secluding the gender role once again. In the future when communicating on the class forums, you should definitely re read everything carefully before posting it. Double checking your work can never cause any harm to you, besides taking up a little more......

My father feels bless to have had the opportunity to go to school and been able to travel around the world while working for the mining company, because the impact it make for his life was very valuable, not just for him but for his family. He got the opportunity to know places and people that he will probably wouldn’t had never thought meeting and that help his mind expand more then just think inside the box. As far as having a bad impact in his family, he doesn’t recall having any, because a couple years after he got marry, he end his work at the mining company and started his own business. He defiantly learn a lot while working for the mining company, specially how to value life. My father said he did had different jobs throw out his teenage years and college years as well that paid him minimum wage. Mostly fixing things like computers, and mechanical problem on televisions and cars. Regarding about either to increase or not a minimum wage, he doesn’t take sides to either one. He believes there are good and bad things in either side. For example, if they will increase wages, some people will have a little more flexibility as far as providing a better living for families, but on the other side this could also increase less motivation, mostly on teenagers that lack motivation and information of the value of pursuing a......

...Hello everyone, my name is Daysia Smith. I currently reside in Fayetteville, NC. My previous Major was Fashion Merchandising and Design and I studied that for two semesters at A&T University in Greensboro, NC. Over the summer I did a lot of reevaluating and decided to broaden my studies and now I’m majoring in Business & Marketing here at Liberty. I’m extremely pleased and blessed to have this opportunity, and education to me is the key to my success. After completing college and receiving my degree I plan to manage if not help manage successful retail companies around the world. The Liberty University Mission Statement does align with my education goals. The main concept that I was able to connect with is having the ability to understand and hear out other people’s views in culture and of international events. With my major, I will have to adapt to keeping an open mind of other people’s beliefs, so this teaching is highly useful. Moreover, I agree that learning and educating yourself can improve your life personally but you have the skill to share your teachings with others to help heavily impact our world and society today. With closure, the mission statement was very appealing and relatable in various ways. The main values of a Christian Liberal Arts education to me is help students relate and combine Christian teachings with the general educational teachings. This combination will then allow students the opportunity to create an open mind to the beliefs, values...

...World Forums Everett Cordy, Student ID#: A00186883 MGMT 8010 – Management in Human and Societal Development Winter Quarter, 2011 Professor: Dr. Kenneth Sherman Walden University January 11, 2012 Abstract This paper critically examines contrasting worldviews on corporate and civil society. To facilitate this examination, a comparison of the values and purposes of the World Social Forum is contrasted with those of the World Economic Forum. The analysis concludes that, without individual and governmental input, corporate action cannot be relied upon to improve the state of the world. . World Forums Without a doubt, the values of the “haves and have not’s” has been in increasing, not only on a national scale, but also on a global scale. From ‘state house’ to ‘hut house’, it is obvious that today’s emphasis on ‘money at any costs’ has resulted in a perversion of the Golden Rule, resulting in “those who have the gold, make the rule”. Not only has this attitude resulted in an abandonment of values that underpin traditional American values of democracy, respect and value of differing cultures, it exacerbates a legacy of American and European colonialism on a global scale. This attitude is manifested in American and European government and corporate policies and actions that erode the principles of corporate social responsibility. World Social...
