Case Memo

...Nutrition Service and U.S. Department of Agriculture 755 F. 2nd 1098 (1985) Facts of the case: The Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), published a rule, for comment, that proposed a maximum sugar content specifically for authorized cereals used in the Special Supplement Food Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC Program) ( Chocolate Manufacturers Association v. Block). Under WIC, the USDA designs food packages reflecting the different nutritional needs of women, infants, and children and provides grants to state or local agencies to distribute cash or vouchers to qualifying individuals in accordance with the Departmental regulations regarding the quantity and type of food ( Chocolate Manufacturers Association v. Block). In addition to the rule, the USDA published a preamble which discussed the general purpose of the rule and problems associated with high sugar foods. Neither the proposed rule nor its preamble discussed sugar in relation to flavored milk, although the rule did include flavored milk in the list of approved food packages for women and children without special dietary needs ( Chocolate Manufacturers Association v. Block). Responding to public comments, the USDA deleted flavored milk from the approved packages list in the final rule (Chocolate Manufacturers Association v. Block). The Chocolate Manufacturers Association (CMA) sought relief from the rule in district court arguing first that the USDA......

The Case Exam

...August 2013 Case Examination General Comments on Performance Cape Lane Port Authority (CLPA) Case Background and Required Element The August 2013 Case Examination focuses on a Canadian Crown Corporation, Cape Lane Port Authority (CLPA), charged with operating the industrial and commercial port at Cape Lane, British Columbia (BC). In May 2013, senior management met with the Board of Directors at a planning retreat to address declining sales and profit. Management assured the federal government that actions would be taken to avoid a loss for the 2014 fiscal year, and set a 5% net profit margin target to be met, within three years, as a corporate goal. This target was approved by both the Board members and the federal ministers, to whom they report. The following alternatives were identified for consideration: 1. Invest in renovations in order to proceed with the Bitumen Shipping Project. 2. Divest the Cruise Ship Terminal. 3. Operate a Passenger Ferry. Additionally, the following minor alternatives were identified: 1. Allow a local entrepreneur to build a reception centre in the cruise ship terminal and pay a royalty of 8% of revenue to CLPA. 2. Build a fitness facility in order to reduce sick time. As Kyle Wast, CMA, prepare a report for CLPA’s executive team advising them on the opportunities discussed and addressing any other organizational issues and concerns requiring their attention. ...behavior. In 1972, the first CMA exam and accreditation was administered to accounting professionals (CMA Handbook, 2012). Forty years later, the program has developed into an internationally recognized program. Individuals who wish to distinguish themselves from thousands of other accountants have the opportunity for a board of regents to review their credentials and pass a two-part examination, which will provide certification. The areas of expertise include: financial planning, analysis, control, and decision support (CMA Handbook, 2012). This paper will cover the basic requirements of following the CMA designation and benefits it will bring. The first step that must be taken by a candidate is becoming a member of the Institute of Management Accountants. Becoming a member requires paying dues and upholding the ethical/professional stance of the organization. To fulfill the educational requirements of a CMA, an individual must receive a bachelor’s degree, in any major, from an accredited university or college. A complete listing of pre-approved schools is found at http://univ.cc/world.php (CMA Handbook, 2012). Just because a school is not on the list, does not mean a person cannot meet this particular criterion. He or she will need to submit the school and a notarized official transcript for evaluation. An entrance fee into the program is required of everyone. However, this payment provides much more than just a lighter wallet. Not only does this provide CMA exam support......

Cga, Cma and Cica Become the Cpa

...On January 17th,2012, the Certified Management Accountants of Canada (CMA Canada), the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA) and the Certified General Accountants of Canada (CGA-Canada) presented members with a framework to unify the Canadian accounting profession. Within this framework this new profession would adopt the Canadian designation Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA). All current members would be required to use it in conjunction with their existing designations. After new members get their designation there would be post-designation specialties to peruse such as tax, forensic accounting, strategic management, and public sector accounting. The unification of the Canadian profession would simplify operations and governance because it would reduce the number of governing bodies from 40 to 14, also reducing confusion in the marketplace. These newly combined provincial and national bodies would have a new Board of Directors that would include representation from each of the participating bodies. The CPA designation is the largest accounting designation in the world and as such a large entity it could ensure that the Canadian accounting profession would be able to influence international standard setting bodies. The very first step to unification started with Quebec. In one unified decision all of the accounting bodies in Quebec were on board. On May 16th, 2012, the Quebec CA, CMA and CGA bodies announced that the Province of Quebec had passed Bill......
