I giovani e il mondo universitario

In un’Europa in cui l’istruzione costituisce una risorsa importante per lo sviluppo economico e civile, l’università italiana produce il numero di laureati più basso d’Europa.
In media la metà degli studenti che si iscrivono all’università abbandona gli studi nel corso dei primi due anni e la durata effettiva degli studi non corrisponde al numero di anni previsto dagli ordinamenti didattici, dando luogo al fenomeno tipicamente italiano del numero eccessivo di studenti fuori corso.
Comparando l’età dello studente italiano con quella di un suo collega europeo al conseguimento della laurea, si nota che il giovane italiano è più avanti negli anni: la media italiana è infatti di ventotto anni.
Pertanto risulta così inevitabile che le generazioni italiane diventeranno autonome dal punto di vista economico molto più tardi e questo ritardo avrà inevitabili ripercussioni su tutte le principali scelte di vita.
L’università è tuttavia un universo in cambiamento a cui accedono sempre più giovani e che cerca di stare al passo con i cambiamenti attuali: negli ultimi anni ha assunto forme nuove adeguandosi alle necessità formative del mondo del lavoro, proponendo percorsi didattici sempre più articolati e flessibili.
Gli interventi di aiuto e adeguamento attuati dalle università non trovano però riscontro nei dati; infatti, su 100 immatricolati, solo 53 arrivano alla laurea e di questi ben oltre il 69% è fuori corso.
Molti degli iscritti non sono “attivi”, ovvero non sostengono nemmeno un esame nel corso dell’anno, oppure sono fuori corso da parecchi anni ma continuano a iscriversi per non perdere gli esami già sostenuti, nella speranza di riprendere gli studi.
Diversi sono i motivi di questa situazione: sicuramente incide una certa “sindrome di Peter Pan”, la stessa che tiene i giovani in casa dei genitori fino ai…...

By Dr Ann Walker This paper reports on the second stage of an attendance monitoring project in which academic staff and students identified as good, average and poor attendees contributed to focus group discussions. In total ten focus groups were held, with thematic analysis identifying the key themes of motivators for attending, motivators against attending, assessment considerations, attendance and marks, reward versus punishment, student autonomy, purpose of attendance monitoring, and problems with monitoring attendance. The findings are discussed in relation to Social Exchange Theory and Social Learning Theory. Introduction This is the second report on a first year attendance monitoring project which is being carried out at the university where I work. In our first paper, we reported that we had found a significant correlation between absence and marks with students with poorer attendance records receiving lower end-of-semester marks. We also found that the poorer attenders were more likely to withdraw, either temporary or permanently, from the course. This finding is in keeping with those of similar studies going back over 50 years (for summary see Richie & Hargrove 2004/05).
