Eating Habits
According to Dr. Veugelers Students who ate an adequate amount of fruit, vegetables, protein, fiber and other components of a healthy diet were significantly less likely to fail a literacy test. While a healthy diet is generally assumed to be important for good school performance, there has actually been little research on this topic, Veugelers and his colleagues note. To investigate, they looked at 850 college students participating in the Students’ Lifestyle and School-performance Study, 475 (19.1 percent) of whom had failed a literacy assessment.
The better a student's eating habits based on several measures of diet quality, including adequacy and variety, the less likely he or she was to have failed the test, the researchers found, even after they adjusted the data for the effects of parental income and education, school, and sex. Eating plenty of fruit and vegetables, and getting fewer calories from fat, was also associated with a lower risk of failing the test.

According to Monique Barb (2008), that there are lots of young people are observant in the new products on the market. People don’t choose the food by its taste but by commercial. Because of the commercialized products we cannot focus on what to buy because people are attracted to it. They don’t care about much of the content and having a healthy body is having a good academic performance.

...EATING HABITS Why do people eat? People eat to survive. Food people eat gives their bodies the energy they need to function. Eating, as a daily activity, is done so many times that could form some eating habits. People say that the current eating habits of a person reflect all of his childhood’s comestible way. Eating habits are a part of a person’s characteristics and an unchanged process over the time. However, I think this concept is not applicable in my case. In my childhood, I always took away any green leaves in my bowl and recognized them as the horrible ingredients. I also ignored the spicy meals which burned my tongue and the tasteless frozen food as all kids did. However, over the time I definitely changed my edible pattern from a child with appreciating vegetables, enjoying spicy taste, and adapting frozen meals. First, my eating habits have been changed from a leafless eater to a green vegetable fan. When I was young, my mom always cooked Pho for me and my father in two separated way. For my dad, my mom made him a large bowl of Vietnamese style beef noodle with all the herb ingredients and fresh vegetable. For me and my little brother, my mom made others bowls without any vegetable element. I recalled she served me the unique Pho with only thick noodle, sliced chicken meat and hot brown soup. Design: Items for the measure were selected from a larger pool on the basis of responses from a pilot study. The 23-item checklist was validated using measures of dietary fat and fibre intake, fruit and vegetable consumption, dietary restraint, nutrition knowledge and a measure of family income. Setting: Participants came from seven secondary schools in the north-west of England. Subjects: A total of 1822 adolescents aged between 13 and 16 y took part in the study, representing 84% of those invited to participate. Results: Correlations between measures indicate a good level of convergent validity, and the checklist is also shown to have high internal and test – retest reliability. Conclusions: The focus on choices available to adolescents means that the checklist will provide a useful addition to food frequency-type approaches to the measurement of adolescent eating behaviour. ...A serious concern nowadays is how our eating habits can affect our health. In particular, it has been demonstrated that eating too much junk food can lead to health issues later in life. One sensible suggestion for dealing with this is to improve the level of health education so that we eat better and live longer. Focusing on health education is an appropriate measure. This would address one underlying cause of the problem. It is clear that there is a connection between what people know about nutrition and their eating habits. For example, children who have learned in school about the need to have a varied diet with plenty of vitamins tend to eat more healthily. In contrast, people who have not had this education still eat too much junk food and as a result suffer from diabetes and other diseases. Better health education, however, is not a complete answer. It ignores the wider social factors that cause people to eat unhealthily. For instance, many people eat fast food because they have a lifestyle that means they do not have time to sit down to a proper meal. Again, other people might eat burgers and pizzas because they are seen to be cool and they want to impress their peers. There would not appear to be any simple way to deal with these social factors. Novilla INTRODUCTION To a large extent, the growing epidemic of global obesity can be explained by rapid changes in dietary patterns that are taking place in both developed and developing societies (Rigby et al., 2004). Specifically, traditional diets that were rich in grains, fiber, fruits and vegetables, are giving way to modern diets that are high in fat, sugar, and sodium (Popkin, 1994). The United States, as one example, progressed through the nutrition transition over a period of approximately 100 years and has now fully transitioned from a traditional to modern diet (Popkin, 2001a). Currently, the U.S. diet derives approximately 33% of calories from fat (Popkin et al., 2001) and the U.S. has achieved one of the highest levels of obesity in the world (23.5%) (Flegal et al., 2002). The prevalence of American obesity continues to climb at alarming rates (a 55% increase between 1980-1994) (Mokdad et al., 2003). Other countries are going through similar nutrition transitions, but at accelerated rates and often with more harmful results (Popkin, 2002). ...Unlike most people, food plays very big part in my life because a lot of my day consists of thinking about or eating food. I relish the thought of eating my favorite foods when I'm starving and even when craving. Although you can live several weeks without food, I wouldn't be able to survive one day without food. It has become an essential part of my life. This is the case not only because unlike most people, I constantly think about food and have a very high metabolism. With a high metabolism I can eat and three hours later I'm hungry again. Without food your mental and physical capabilities will deteriorate rapidly, and you will become weak. I take pleasure in eating various types of food among my favorite foods are pizza, lasagna, chicken wings, waffles, ice cream, and Biryani. Generally speaking any food with cheese in it is my kind of food. I particularly enjoy the way pizza feels in my mouth because it's chewy and easy to swallow. Being anemic my doctor recommends me to eat fish and liver because I lack iron. Truthfully speaking I can't stand fish and liver because of there distinct odor. I prefer sticking iron pills down my throat. I would like to find another natural source of iron in food so that I can never forget to eat it because I enjoy it like my favorite foods. This literally means that they skip meal every day and have only 2 meals a day. Only 16% have don’t skip any meal. Unsurprisingly, most of the skipped meals are breakfasts Water consumption 44% the respondents drink enough water (more than 1.5 liter a day). The rest of them, clearly, don’t drink enough needed water. To be more specific, 39% drink 1-1.5 liter a day while 17% students drink less than a liter a day. For breakfast, most people drink coffee or milk with cereal when they wake up and a croissant or tyropita (it is like a cheese pie one of our favorite). Later, we eat lunch around 14-15 but it is a warm full meal. And then, at night we eat around 9-10 pm maybe something small like a salad or a sandwich but it could be the case that someone will eat again a warm meal or something like pizza, crepe, or pitagyros. NETHERLANDS In the Netherlands, most people eat a sandwich, cereal, yoghurt or fruit, and coffee or tea as breakfast before going to work or school. Most people eat sandwiches or a salad as lunch (mostly between 12.00 and 13.00 o’clock) and for dinner they mostly have a warm meal. This warm meal is mostly eaten between 17.00 and 19.00 o’clock. The warm meal varies per day but mostly we eat potatoes with vegetables and meat. Old(er) people mostly eat a warm meal for lunch and sandwiches in the evening. INDONESIA In Indonesia, we eat three times a day. Normally we eat rice not only in lunch time but also for breakfast and dinner. For breakfast, some people eat rice and some other eat bread.
