Emerald Ash Borer

An introduced (alien, exotic, non-indigenous, or non-native) species is a species living outside its native habitat. This species have arrived by human activity, either deliberate or accidental. Some introduced species are damaging to the ecosystem they are introduced into, others have no negative effect and some can be beneficial. A recently introduced species to Wisconsin is the emerald ash borer. Unfortunately the emerald ash borer has negative effects, is invasive, was brought to Wisconsin and other states by accident, and is not welcome to the area.
The emerald ash borer is a beetle that is bright, metallic green, about 1/2″ long with a flat back. It has purple abdominal segments under its wing covers. The emerald ash borer can fit on the head of a penny, and is hard to spot in the wild. The emerald ash borer is native to northern China and Korea. It can also be found in eastern Russia, Japan, and Mongolia. It is believed the emerald ash borer traveled to the United States by stowing away in some wood packing material. It can be found in the states of Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. Unfortunately other states can be at risk. The beetle as also has been found in Ontario and Quebec, Canada. The emerald ash borer was first discovered in Southeast Michigan in 2002. It has then spread to other area of the Unites States of America.
The real problem with the emerald ash borer is the larvae. Like many insects, the emerald ash borer has four distinct life stages: adult, egg, larva, and pupa. Its larvae cause the damage to ash trees. They do this by tunneling into the bark of the tree. As this is done it cuts off the food and water supplies to the trees causing the tree to…...

Emerald Coast

...The Emerald Coast Perfection, nothing describes that word better than Destin, Florida’s Emerald Coast. The name speaks for itself; the radiant green waters are like a massive jewel delicately placed in the sand. The Emerald Coast is a rare kind of experience, only rivaled by that of the Caribbean. The seemingly endless miles of quartz, pure white sand, and the commanding presence of the green-blue waters are healing grounds for weary souls. From a far, elevated view, you are able to perceive the panoramic image of Destin’s Emerald Coast; also, at such a vantage point, the eye is blind to details, yet a keen beholder will marvel at the contrast between the turquoise waters and the vast snow-like, crystal sands, all under the canopy of the periwinkle sky. The atmosphere here is serene, even when the sun kissed wind occasionally gushes over the land, as if to cleanse the oppression from those who have come to experience the supremacy of the Emerald Coast. Next, as you move closer to the ocean, the panoramic image beheld earlier, gradually grows alive and the brilliant green water, along with, its beach become a conglomerate of activities. The people around here are as much a wonder as the sea and the sand; moreover, you will immediately distinguish the first timers from the seasoned beach goers. Newcomers have not yet learned to trust their lives to the mesmerizing, energy filled waters, at last, they submit to the allures of the waters, letting go of their defenses,......

She was a woman who worked hard in a male-dominated society of US. If we compare this trait of women in US and women of Pakistan, there exists a difference; people in our society would not like women to go around the houses to do sales because there’s a risk involved in this case, especially when it comes to women in our society. Women like Mary K Ash was indeed a strong woman who dedicated her life for the betterment of women in US society, she was a source of inspiration and motivator for her employees. However, the trend in our society is changing; many woman entrepreneurs are emerging from Pakistan, one example is Benazir Bhutto who stepped out in a man’s world and created a new path for women. Although she is not with us anymore but she still remains a source of inspiration and serves as a role model for many people. Essay of Ash

...Ash Who am I? A question many has asked themselves upon realizing that their life is a routine day in and day out. There is a growing tendency in the western civilization for marriages to dissolve. Self-fulfillment is in the high seat. We are no longer bound by the traditional view upon marriage and the traditional family life. Another problem probably adding to the aforementioned is the increased focus on identity and following it the growing number of identity crises. In the text ASH by Roddy Doyle from May 24 2010 we stumble upon two troubled brothers Kevin and Mick. Mick tries to establish a life for himself after a ruined marriage, and Kevin finds himself in a situation where his marriage is about to be poured out the drain like sour milk. The story unfolds chronically with a third person character-focaliser narrator with Kevin’s point of view. The text is dominated by short sentences and direct speech. The effect of this being that there is created a feeling of action and constant movement in the story. One could even argue that this text has a home-out-home composition based on the protagonist Kevin’s different emotional states throughout the story. At the start of the story Kevin’s problem is made, and the middle and most of the text is treating how he deals with this problem, and finally in the end the problem resolves and he is at his normal emotional state. The protagonist Kevin is a middle-aged man. He is not a man of action on the contrary he makes no......

A. Raheem and O. K. Sulaiman Civil Engineering Department, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Ogbomoso, Nigeria. Abstract This study investigates the use of Saw Dust Ash (SDA) as partial replacement for ordinary Portland cement (OPC) in sandcrete blocks. Some units of sandcrete hollow blocks were produced by partially replacing the cement content with 5% to 25% by weight of SDA, using vibrating block moulding machine. Sandcrete blocks without SDA serve as the control. The blocks produced were tested to determine their density, compressive strength and water absorption rate. The results indicated that compressive strength of sandcrete hollow blocks at 28 days are 2.16N/mm2, 1.94N/mm2, 1.64N/mm2, 1.59N/mm2,1.39N/mm2, and 1.25N/mm2 for Control, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 25% SDA contents respectively. At 56 days, the compressive strength of blocks with 5% and 10% SDA replacement are 2.33N/mm2 and 2.04N/mm2 respectively, both of which surpassed the required standard of 2.00N/mm2 specified by the National Building Code (2006) for non-load bearing walls. It was concluded that only sandcrete blocks with up to 10% SDA replacement can be used for non-load bearing walls. cement will definitely reduce the cost...

Coal Ash

...Two years ago, a massive coal-ash spill in Tennessee awakened Americans to the fact that the billion tons of coal we use each year doesn’t vanish into thin air when it’s burned. In 2008 alone, U.S. power plants produced nearly 100 million tons of coal ash; combined with other coalburning residues, such as gypsum, the total was 133 million tons. Much of that waste is mixed with water and kept in clay-lined ponds, often remarkably close to rivers, underground wells, and residential areas. On Dec. 22, 2008, at the Tennessee Valley Authority’s Kingston Fossil Plant, a dike broke and released 1.1 billion gallons of ash slurry. The ash spilled into the Emory River and inundated 300 acres of surrounding land. It was the largest fly-ash release in U.S. history, causing an estimated $3 billion in damages. And it could happen again, at another plant – reports have identified high-risk ash ponds across the country. Plus even when it doesn’t spill, coal ash disposal can be hazardous to your health: In many communities, concerns about groundwater contamination have been raised. Lisa P. Jackson, head of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, vowed to ensure no disaster like the TVA spill ever occurs again. Coal ash disposal, she argued, should be regulated to protect the public – and since early 2009, EPA has been working toward that goal. But it’s not an easy process. Since 1980, coal ash has been excluded from regulation as a hazardous waste under the so-called Bevill......

Emerald Events Have Divided Our Processes Up Into Two Categories

...Business Operations Emerald Events have divided our processes up into two categories. Firstly, we have created an online presence for both ourselves and for our potential market. Firstly, we have created a private Facebook group where each of the partners have the opportunity to contact everybody simultaneously, which is beneficial because it is open to be seen at any time and it reduces the time of contacting each person individually. The communication on this page is generally focussed around ideas, meetings and suggestions. Furthermore, our online presence has been the focus of our market. We have created a page where Facebook users can search and ‘like’ in order to be kept in-the-know about Emerald Events and all of its plans. As our market grows year-on-year when new students enrol at the university, we plan to ensure that they are completely aware of Emerald Events and services we provide, so once they arrive at university, they will already know people on their course and will be in the know of the events that they should attend. Facebook is a great marketing tool to establish the meaning of our business. From an alternative point of view, our secondary process is our face-to-face presence. We want to become recognised among the students so that they feel they always have somebody there to speak to and to be with. We want our customers to know that as well as being a business, we want to be The Henley Business School social reps and that we want them to know......

Fly Ash Brick

...pid=S1516-14392008000200008&script=sci_arttext Process parameter optimization for fly ash brick by Taguchi method     Prabir Kumar Chaulia*; Reeta Das Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute, Durgapur–713209, India     ABSTRACT This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation carried out to optimize the mix proportions of the fly ash brick by Taguchi method of parameter design. The experiments have been designed using an L9 orthogonal array with four factors and three levels each. Small quantity of cement has been mixed as binding materials. Both cement and the fly ash used are indicated as binding material and water binder ratio has been considered as one of the control factors. So the effects of water/binder ratio, fly ash, coarse sand, and stone dust on the performance characteristic are analyzed using signal–to–noise ratios and mean response data. According to the results, water/binder ratio and stone dust play the significant role on the compressive strength of the brick. Furthermore, the estimated optimum values of the process parameters are corresponding to water/binder ratio of 0.4, fly ash of 39%, coarse sand of 24%, and stone dust of 30%. The mean value of optimal strength is predicted as 166.22 kg.cm–2 with a tolerance of ± 10.97 kg.cm–2. Confirmatory experimental result obtained for the optimum conditions is 160.17 kg.cm–2. Keywords: optimization, compressive strength, fly ash brick, Taguchi method     1.......
