Forever 21: Dealing with America’s Fear of Aging and Death

Developmental Psychology 210 Liberty University

Abstract
Mankind has tried to cheat aging and death by freezing their remains, cosmetic surgery or marrying outside their generation hoping to stay young. However, these attempts are futile and Americans cannot hold back the clock or trick death. The clock is ticking and when it stops I will die and so will you no one knows when. Although there is a great deal of research on aging and death, no one has discovered how to halt the inevitable. It is a scientific and biblical fact that human beings will age and die. All life ends in death. This paper will cover some of the issues regarding, fear of death, and fear of aging. It will also explore if Americans fear death and aging because we have no control over it or we don’t understand it.

Fear of aging can be attributed the fear of our health failing; losing our memory, independence and the energy for living our lives to the fullest (Berger, 2001). Fear of death can be attributed to not being able to speak to someone who is still experiencing it. Many fear growing older because of the onslaught of mental deterioration such as dementia and Alzheimer’s disease; which are attributed to old age. (Philipchalk, 1994). Fear of aging and death is caused by America’s negative concept; it is the natural progression of life. In Strongman’s research he found that a dominant aspect of aging is death (Strongman, 2006). Peoples thought inevitably turn to their own ending more than they did when they were younger. A suicide story was published in The Mirror. It talked about a couple carried out suicide pact because they could not cope with the humiliations of old age. Luise Barber, 83, and husband Alan, 79, who each took a drug overdose, had often spoken of ending their lives and had…...

Over the years, American culture has grown uncomfortable with matters of growing old and death. The basis of this thinking is rooted in the mind and influenced by society. There is an ever increasing desire that’s rampant across our nation to remain young. This can be seen in the media, marketing for different products from makeup to apparel. Americans want to remain young for as long as they possibly can. In 1984, the band Alphaville came out with the song “Forever Young” to express America’s heart cry. However, aging and death is a part of life and a direct result of the fall of man. Aging and death were not the original condition of humanity, rather punishment that resulted from rebellion against God’s commandment. This paper examines why there is aging and death, America’s response to it, and a solution to rightly mature in the process. Since long ago America’s heart cry has been to stay young forever. In 1984, the band Alphaville came out with the song “Forever Young” to communicate the nation’s desire. In cities across the country and around every turn, materialism is vocalizing the longing for youth everlasting. This......

Changed Forever

...Changed Forever For years, I have wanted to visit the Oklahoma City National Memorial and Museum. My youngest son had been there and was immensely touched by this. Therefore, I determined this assignment would be the perfect opportunity for me to visit and in turn write about it. Immediately, in all honesty, I understood that this memorial and museum was a dedication of peace and hope that will change you forever. The museum is a place of amazing transformation that offers a unique insight of the events that took place on April 19, 1995. As you enter the museum, the first item you see is a huge wall that states, “Just like communities everywhere, it is the start of a day like any other day”, but as you proceed, the story of that day is revealed gallery by gallery showing you that it was not an ordinary day. As you approach the end of the third floor, which is where the tour begins, you are greeted by Gus, an elderly man, probably in his early seventies and full of knowledge of the events that took place that day. He explains that we are about to hear an actual audio recording of a water board hearing that was held across the street from the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building on the morning of the bombing. Our group, roughly 20 people, is ushered into a room where the audio is playing, approximately two minutes into the hearing; you hear a loud explosion followed by panicked shouting as the faces of the 168 victims killed that day are displayed on the......

“Grabeng ganda nya tol no? Maputi, makinis ang kutis parang pang Ms. Universe! Tol sa tingin mo bagay kaya kami?” “Ha? Eh! Siguro pero parang suplada tsaka baka may boyfriend na......

Forever with You

...Forever With You PROLOGUE I never knew life could be this cruel. I never knew it would all end up like this. Life is so unfair. And I started to dwell on that fact. Why would he have to be the one? A tear fell from my eye. No! This can’t be happening! I knew at an instant that our battle is over. I broke into a run outside the hospital and as soon as I was out, the crisp of the cold night air engulfed me. I screamed at the top of my lungs as a blinding flash of light struck my eyes. I saw a glimpse of a shiny black Volvo: the very same car that started all these misery. It’s the car of death: the one that almost killed me and my beloved. Instead of sprawling away from the road, I smiled unwarily as the loud tire screeches filled the silence of the night. I was sent flying over board as the bone shattering impact met my build. This must be what dying feels like. And if this is true love, we’ll see each other again. His words echoed in my mind. I fell on the road feeling the cold asphalt on my skin and that’s when I closed my eyes . . . forever. Chapter 1 Moving “Sehun-ah!” A booming voice awoke me from my trance. “You coming or not? The car’s waiting. Ppalli.” I mumbled something to myself as I caught a final glimpse on my window. Why do we even have to leave this house? The weather’s so good it’s a shame for me for not being able to enjoy it. Sigh. Screw this moving-somewhere-else idea. It would be fun skiing - without falling on the water of......

Forever Gold

...Forever Gold As I sit here, and reflect on the poem “Nothing Gold Can Stay" by Robert Frost, one story comes to my mind. On one particular afternoon, my family had decided to go to Prairie Winds Park, for a little adventure. When we arrived, my older brother had asked me if I wanted to ride a bicycle down the hill that the park had. Now, keep in mind that this hill is very large, almost perpendicular to the ground and covered in rocks and bumps. I, being the naïve girl that I was, didn’t even hesitate to say yes, or to think of all the injuries the trip down the hill on the bicycle could give me. And so, my older brother and I both settled on the bicycle ready to go downhill. The bicycle was clearly meant for one person so I sat on the metal frame in between the seat and the handlebars. We landed on the ground with the front wheels hitting the ground first and the back wheels still in the air. All the while, I was screaming my head off. The slight brush with death sent a chill down my spine. When I finally decided to open my eyes, I realized that both my older brother and I were safe. I was oh, so thankful. But even with the scare that I had had a little part of me wanted to do it all over again. So, we did. We continued, and each time, it was much more exhilarating. After about the third time, a person patrolling the park stopped our fun, and informed us about the many rules that we apparently were breaking.......

...communication. 4.1 Evaluation of Forever 21 and its need for crowdsourcing Forever 21 is a well-established company with a strong customer base within the younger generations from teens up to the 30s, it tailors its designs to appeal to this age group (Forever21 Inc. 2015). Crowdsourcing platforms Freelancer, WYRT and Spoonflower are not suitable for Forever 21 as they have a niche focus on innovative design. As design is a core capability of the company, it should be developed as a competitive advantage and never to be outsourced (Hirai A, 2012). WYRT also provides the service of market research through analysing trending statistics; However, given the goals and objectives of the company (refer to Appendix A), it should again work to enhance its designs, creating the trend instead of simply following. Hence these platforms would not provide much benefit to the company. Although it would be advantageous to form partnerships or sponsorships with these crowdsourcing platforms as they can be a channel to finding new talented recruits to join the company. In context of Forever 21’s operations and future projections (refer to Appendix A), I believe the crowdsourcing website oDesk would add the most value to the business in terms of cost minimization, innovation, as well as operational efficiency and effectiveness. As pointed out previously, oDesk encompasses a global network of users and skills pool (ODesk Corp. 2015), which could complement Forever 21’s business......

Diamonds Are Forever

...Jackie Labor Case Study #2: Diamonds are Forever 2/11/2015 Provide a historical overview of the campaign. What were the factors in the industry/market that led to it? What specific consumers were targeted? Did competitive factors play a role? When was it launched and how long did it run? Who were the key players/strategists/agencies involved? * During the time of this diamond campaign, there was a diamond rush going on in South Africa. Every diamond company raced over to start mining in South Africa. Cecil Rhodes had bought land from brothers Johannes Nicholas and Diederik Arnoldus de Beer. On March 12, 1888, De Beers Consolidated Mines Ltd. Was formed and the empire began to spread throughout Europe. Sir Ernest Oppenhiemer grew tremendous interest in the company and ended up establishing the Diamond Trading Co. in Kimberly, South Africa and London, England. Harry Oppenheimer was on the board of De Beer’s company. He took a trip to the United States to test a pilot marketing campaign but ended up with this full-fledged advertising campaign that has been successful ever since (Posnock, 2006). * In 1931, through the mist of The Great Depression and later World War 2, diamond competitors were emerging such as Gemological Institute of America (GIA), The Diamond’s Dealer Club of New York, and Diamond Manufacturers and Importers Association (Posnock, 2006). * Russia found diamond mines that were similar to the ones found in South Africa, so they became a crucial......

Living Forever

...expiration date, planet earth will be crammed with billions of billions of humans. Resources to date are dangerously low and global warming is at an all time high, and with the rapid increase of population the demand for resources will become extinct. Even though the technology that you use would be amazing, the earth couldn’t survive immortal humans. Thus the value of life is the glue to help keep our society together. The more people alive the less the values of life is. Kind of like currency, the more the treasury makes the less the value money gets. With the less the value life is the higher crime rate. As you can see; the curse is immortality and I don’t agree that it should be welcomed to world. I understand the crave of living forever, or fear of dying but its not realistic to have earths population immortal. The loneliness would be unalienable, and resources extinct. The value of life would decrease causing the crime rate to increase. So for now, I’m a-okay with blowing out 90 candles....

Goodbyes Are Not Forever

...GOODBYES ARE NOT FOREVER I never thought I could get this attached to my classmates, so attached that I have mixed feelings as we graduate. I am happy for I know how much we’ve waited for this. I have felt our excitement for it vibrated throughout our classroom as we started with our countdown. I know that we’re happy because of the new freedom close at hand, a new challenge which perhaps tingle our spine from time to time. Yes, graduation has offered us a different kind of happiness. Yet, I’m sad deep within for I know that after this, we’ll go on our separate ways, living our separate lives. I have this creeping feeling we’ll barely see each other from now on. Hey! You’ll be pursuing your dreams and I’ll be pursuing mine. I’ll be forgetting my dear classmates for a while as I daringly take hold of a new chapter in my life, and I guess they’ll do the same too. You know, “forget the buried woes and dead despairs for there’s a brand new trial right at hand.” And then, as we settle down in our new “nest”, we’ll start remembering each other, and all shall be coming back – the laughters, the tears, the jokes, the songs – every little moment I have shared with them. But for now, I have to move on. I have to search for my rightful place in “the circle of life.” Then, though fate may separate us, I hope that sometime, somewhere, we’ll meet again. I shall look forward to that day when I can embrace you and we shall talk, laugh, cry......

Forever 21: Too Good to Be True?

...Too Good To Be True? Forever 21 and its Illegal and Immoral Policies After a recent shopping spree at Forever 21, the many hours spent perusing the rakes brought continuous amazement at the low prices found on the tags. How could clothes this trendy and fashionable possibly come at such a reasonable price? This question was quickly followed by an unsettling yet painfully obvious thought. Sweatshops. To me, there was no other explanation as to how one of the world’s most popular clothing stores for young woman could provide such a marked down price to its customers. The stylish knockoffs became to me what they had always been, too good to be true. Upon returning from my long day of shopping, I decided to dig a bit deeper into this new found curiosity I had. Trying to figure out if Forever 21 utilizes sweatshops was sadly an extremely easy task. Numerous hits came up on my screen with articles all confirming my resent realization. Articles discussing Forever 21’s poor working conditions, hypocritical religious ties and countless designer copyright infringements flooded the search screen. Forever 21 sounds like the American Dream come true: it was founded by a poor Korean couple who immigrated to the USA in 1981. The company is still privately-owned and operated in L.A. and the couple, Do Won “Don” Chang and Jin Sook, chalk up its success to their Christian faith and frugal, hard-working values. Those who have worked with or for the company, however, say that its......
