The Kids

...The Kids Are All Right Research Paper I viewed the movie The Kids Are All Right. This movie is about a couple, Nic and Jules, who are in a committed, long term relationship. Their relationship is by no means perfect. They have two kids, Laser and Joni. Laser’s biological mother is Jules and Joni’s is Nic. Each child represents their mother in temperament. The twist is that Joni and Laser are both half siblings having the same sperm donor father. Joni is eighteen and Laser is only fifteen. Shortly before Joni plans to head off for college, Laser pleads with her to contact their sperm donor father. He is thirty-something Paul, a co-op farmer and restaurateur. Paul may look successful but he has always evaded responsibilities, mainly in his personal life. After meeting Paul, Nic and Jules learn about their children’s interaction with their sperm donor father. They do not want him in their lives but still want to have a connection with him and meet him since the kids want to maintain contact with him. As their entire relationship grows with Paul, this includes him hiring Jules to design and construct his backyard; they want to have an effect on what he wants in life. This in turn affects the family dynamic and each person’s relationship outside the family. The Family is much more conventional than what they seem. Nic is the obvious stereotypical father figure. She brings home the money at the end of the week being a doctor. Jules is not sure what she wants in life. Her......

...desires. If one wants to be happy, surely, he has to discover his best desires that provide him a happy life. Some of these desires that help to continue our lives can be acceptance in our relationships, a good family life and strong social relations. Trying to satisfy these desires has a great meaning to achieve happiness for me.   To start with, however embarrassed I am about this desire of mine, I have an obsession to expect people to accept my thoughts and manners in every situation. Yes, this is not a good characteristic and sometimes makes me an antipathic person but trying to be accepted by someone can give you happiness, too. Besides, if you can manage to make someone love you knowing and accepting all about you, I think that is the absolute happiness.   Furthermore, it seems to me that family is the basic source of happiness. Certainly, I can’t always be a good guy and sometimes I make them upset but I can’t stand seeing them upset. Therefore, I try to do whatever necessary to make them happy. Consequently, when I see happy family faces, I feel deeply happy.   Thirdly, to have friends is one of the most meaningful aspects of life. I believe that one should have three very warm friends at least. For example, I can’t bear loneliness and if I couldn’t share all my heart with these warm friends, I believe that I could never be happy. As a consequence, if you feel like me, it will be worth improving your close relationships in order to be happy.   To recap,......

...Do You Have What It Takes to Be Happy? By Stacey Colino 1.If you add up money, beauty, fame, and admiration, you’ve got the formula for a lifetime of bliss, right? Wrong. The truth is, your financial status, external circumstances, and life events account for no more than 15 percent of your happiness quotient, studies show. What elements do make a difference? Surprisingly simple internal factors such as having healthy self-esteem, a sense of optimism and hope, gratifying relationships, and meaning and purpose in your life have the most influence, according to recent studies on what researchers call “subjective well-being” 2.If that sounds like a tall order, here’s the good news: Even if they don’t come naturally, many of the attitudes and thought patterns that influence happiness can be cultivated, which means you can boost your capacity for happiness today—and in the future. “Studies with twins reveal that happiness is somewhat like a person’s cholesterol level—it’s genetically influenced, but it’s also influenced by some factors that are under our control”, explains David Myers, Ph.D., a social psychologist at Hope College in Holland, Michigan, and author of The Pursuit of Happiness (Harper Collins, 1993). In other words, while your genetically determined temperament has a fairly strong influence on your happiness quotient, you can nudge it upward with the attitudes and approaches you bring to your life. To develop a sunnier disposition, use the simple strategies......

The Kids on the Block

...I sat at the front porch at home and I didn’t see kids playing on the block after school, or on weekends. All my neighbor’s home doors are closed and I don’t know them, or their kids. Communication between my neighbors doesn’t exist. We are strangers because our lives are too busy and we do not have time to stay outside to know each other. When I was a child we used to play ball on the street, ride our bicycles, enjoy card games, traded baseball cards, or ran races to see who was faster. I remembered running home to get money because the ice cream truck is coming or running home for help because you got hurt once brought all the neighborhood kids to your door to wait and see the results. A quarter in your hand or a new clean band aid was admired and then everyone went back to happily playing the game at hand. Now that is history and we just talk about the good times kid had when they used to play on the streets. I go to my sister house and my nephews are with all their electronic games that replaced the precious time of playing on the street with the neighbors. They are lazy, their initiative is gone, and new inventions and communications do not exist because they want to build their scores in their favorite electronic games. Playing games alone is the most common they to do; one could be happy knowing that kids will not get into trouble since they won’t be exposed to dangerous things that are happening on the street nowadays. I see the streets empty of bustling......

Kid 2 Kid

...In this wonderful experience, I learned plenty about the kids and how I could connect their everyday behavior. In all the units we have covered, they displayed most, if not all the attributes about behavior, the way the brain works and how we learn towards certain things. This experience helped me grow in understanding psychology. The first psychology reference that I noticed were the behaviors that made them human. Behaviorism refers to the school of psychology founded by John B. Watson and was based on the belief that behaviors can be measured, trained, and changed. Behaviorism is a concept of learning based upon the idea that all behaviors are developed through conditioning. Conditioning occurs through interaction with the environment. The first example of this was on my first visit with the students and their art teacher. When a student would talk over the teacher, she would take away points for their daily activities and they would immediately stop. By taking something away, the bad behavior was changed. Another example of behaviorism that the students exhibited was when they found out I would be helping out every week. It gave them something to look forward to and more than likely provided a basis for their behavior throughout the week. The students who exhibited bad behavior could be put back “in line” by letting them know they would not be able to participate in the interactions of the high school student that visited them weekly. Students were also rewarded for......

Happy

...In this essay, I am going to talk about two of the many things that make me feel happy and what I think it means to be happy. The first thing that makes me happy is being surrounded by the people you love and care for, which is family. Being closer to your family makes me happy. It is always good to be around those that love you more often than being apart from them. My family almost always gets together on Sundays. We go to my grandmother’s house and spend the day with each other. I find this to be relaxing and I feel that having people that care for each other makes you a happier person. Also, when people have children they should be there for them because they will live a healthier life if their parents are in their life more often. It is also good to notice and acknowledge kids when they accomplish their goals because it will make them and yourself happier than if you just ignore them. Family is also a very important part of one’s life because they will always be there for you until you die. Whereas, a wife or significant other may not be there for you until you die or in times of need. This is because they can always leave even after years and years of being with one another. The second thing that makes me feel happy is being able to live and enjoying life. I do not really stress, the reason for it, is because there is nothing to stress about. I enjoy my life and that is what makes me happy. Another thing, is that I accomplish the goals that I set for myself. I will......

Happy

...One essential standard for living is being able to be happy. Happiness can be found in many different forms. It can be found with the purchasing of inanimate objects that better our living styles or it can be found with someone else that you associate with. The latter is the more imperative of the designs of happiness. In order to be truly happy you need to be able to understand that everything is good within your own life and that you are able to be happy with the people that are in your life and the people that influence how you live your daily life. Happiness is all of the good that someone experiences combined into one emotion. This emotion can, and usually does, bring out the best in people. For someone to be happy they need to know that everything that has happened in their past has happened for a reason and that it has happened in order for them to become a better person. Not only does it make them a better person but it also makes them realize how good they have it or can possibly have it. Although things might be hard to deal with at the moment, people need to realize that they will be able to learn from their experiences and that they will learn to take the good from them all. In the end, the hard times will help people strive for happiness. Happiness isn't free. You have to earn it and work to keep it....

The Kid

...Paper One Assignment for Film One (F1) ARTH 334 James Jackson February 7, 2015 “The Kid” debuted in 1921 written and directed by Charles Chaplin is great film about a poor man (played by Charles Chaplin) who runs into a situation that tests his morals and character. He finds an abandoned baby orphan on the street and not having the means to support another person he still decides to care for this child (played by Jackie Coogan) and teaches him what he knows about the world. This film perfectly presents a good balance of comedy and drama in a way that makes you sympathize with the main characters and route for their happiness of staying together. Three specific items to concentrate on are its camerawork, editing, and sound. The camerawork (Cinetography) aided in the story telling of this film by using match on action, specifically different scene angles showing different views within same scene and adding continuation to the story. This type of scene change allowed for movement of the subject as it was occurring to various places and continue temporal continuity. I noticed however the camera was always still with limited left and right panning action only. Adding more movement to the camera through tracking shot could have possibly made the scene more fluid in motion avoiding the viewer from orienting themselves at every scene change. It would have been possible for Chaplin to add this technique as it was already available and featured in an Italian film in......

Happy

...Oscar Wilde’s “The Happy Prince” is a meaningful short story that the author writes for his two sons. Through the two main characters’ actions of the story are the statue Happy Prince and the bird Swallow, I have learned the two valuable lessons: helping the poor people is happiness and noble friendship between Happy Prince and Swallow. Through Happy Prince’s actions, I know that helping the poor people is happiness. Indeed, we will feel happy if we help any unfortunate person or difficult situation as possible ways as that we indeliberately come across on the street. Like Happy Prince in the story, he will never find a real happiness if he does not see the misery and ugliness of his own city. He has a luxurious life in the splendid palace when he is alive, so he thinks that it is happy. But when he dies, he is sculpted a statue and set up in high position to see the poverty in his city, he recognizes what is tears, what is sorrow. Therefore, he decides to use all of his valuable things such as his sword’s ruby, two sapphires of his eyes and all the golden leaves to help the poor people that he sees. Although his statue is not now beautiful anymore and his eyes are bilnd, he feels extremely happy because his valuable things can help and bring the better life for the poor people who he formerly used to once not look down to care them. I think that he will never be aware of real happiness if he still continues living in his splendid palace and just when he gives away his......

...was only right for us to drop a bomb on these soulless people. Only when researching my paper did I come across the horrors the American soldiers and people did to the Japanese; the carving of of bones of dead Japanese soldiers. To a people that valued and respected death like the Japanese did this was the ultimate form of disrespect. This was a shocking revelation to me: could Americans be just as cruel as I was taught the Japanese were? There is a saying that says “history is written by the victors” and this is incredibly true because whenever you look at an American history book and you read on the American Revolution it is this huge dramatic battle where the courageous Americans overtook the British and won their independence. Every kid knows the stories of Paul Revere and “the redcoats are coming, the redcoats are coming!” and how these brave American fighters fought against the oppressive taxes of the British. But believing this without questioning the source is ignorant because you are not taking the opposing view into account. If you were to read the British take on what happened it was nothing more than a small skirmish. These are completely different accounts of what happened, so how could I possible know what to believe? The answer is both. All views and interpretations have some value because it helps you see the whole picture and be able to construct your interpretations of what truly happened. History books in its purest form tell what happened but it is up......

Be Happy

...full because now I have a chance to finally write my first blog post. I'll share a few tips from my heart on being and staying happy in Jesus. * "Are any among you in trouble? They should pray..." - James 5:13 Pray; my joy begins and ends in God and I can confidently say that the joy of the Lord is truly my strength. You cannot be happy while you insist on carrying your own burdens. The Bible says that we cast our cares on the Lord. Now the way to do this is by prayer. I do not expect to be happy while my God is angry at me. So be it burdens of sin -by the way disobedience to God will snuff the joy out of you cause joy is from the Holy Spirit and He can get grieved by us when we do wrong!-, worry, anxiety, depression, name it! I will lay it at His feet and His cross and take on His yoke. I realized that if I truly want to be happy all the days of my life, then I should seek diligently to be full of all that God is. * ------------------------------------------------- "...Are any among you happy? They should sing praises." ------------------------------------------------- James 5:13 Be grateful; My heart "glows" when I appreciate someone. And it does so when am appreciated as well. Being grateful helps you appreciate and be content with what you have. A sincere thank you to God and people around you will go a long way in helping you stay happy about what you already have. When is the last time you said thank you? Take your time with God today, give thanks sincerely......

A Happy Meal for a Happy Mind

...A Happy Meal for the Mind When I was a little girl I always thought it was a treat to visit McDonalds. This magical place had a giant play-place, ice cream, French fries and of course that special surprise toy contained inside the happy meal. What else could I have wanted? This world lost all of its glamour however, when I became a teen who experienced the inner workings of this land from the side of employment. I will never forget the place that was to be my first experience of the working world. My Fifteenth birthday had just passed and this meant I was finally old enough to enter the work force. So I went to the only place in the area that would hire a kid without experience or a driver’s license, McDonalds. Now, I wasn't entirely thrilled about the idea of working in this environment but if I wanted to get a car in the next year it was off to work for me. Somewhat sullenly, I donned my uniformed baseball cap and made my way behind the service counter. Feeling a little nervous, I fumbled as I attempted to tie my apron behind my back. I began to wonder what I might be assigned to do first. "Well, as long as I can work behind the scenes and avoid talking to people I should be okay." I thought. Standing motionless, I observed the fast-food frenzied scene. Employees were running here and there yelling to one another, order screens were flashing, various machines were......

Where a Kid Could Be a Kid

...Where a Kid Could be a Kid As we waited in line for the restaurant to open there was a thrill of excitement in the air. We had arrived for the celebration of my little cousins birthday. As I pushed the door open, the scenery rapidly changed as I set foot on what seemed to be a new planet. We had returned to Chuck E. Cheese. The color of the walls, the color of the carpet, and the color of the ceiling all seemed to affect every person that entered the room with a positive attitude. The restaurant, in fact, did not smell pleasant at all; an oniony stench that ran through the room. Chuck E. Chesses reminded me of when we once ran around happily, excited to be living in happiness. I tried to invite my friend but her mean self replied with “Nobody goes there anymore, it’s too crowded” The excitement was revealed after the children saw the flashing lights, and heard the loud noise that seemed to be escaping from the games that was spreaded out all through the restaurant. It was then that I felt as If it was I that was running around playing the games, as if it was I sliding down the slippery slide, and as if I were eating the dull pizza that I once thought of as the most delicious food at Chuck E. Cheese. There was a small boy that stood out from the crowd, a curious looking child. He was very well dressed; He had a chunky but adorable face; His expensive shoes suggested rich but his dirty shirt and dirty pants and dirty hair the opposite,i was thinking he was having a little......
