Week 4 assignment
Social media has taken over the world over the past few tears. From social media sites like twitter, facebook, and youtube many different companies, and people have all benefited from the use of social media. Since the internet is filled with computer hackers, scams, and sexual predators the disadvantages of social media can outweigh the advantages of social media at times. However the disadvantages of social media have not stopped social media networks from taking over the internet. Having the ability to do anything you can imagine from a social network for your business use or personal life has come to life. Using social media to find lost, old friends or family members was the main idea of social media networks when it first hit the internet scene. Then the genius behind the scenes explored different options to open up the door for more benefits of social media, like advertising a business, internet dating, job searching, night life, or even to receive news before it airs live on television networks. The internet has always been a dangerous thing to use even in the early 90’s some websites posted messages to use their website with caution, but with the evolution of social media it makes it hard for any website to protect their users. From computer hackers, sexual predators, and con artist make hard to trust anything on the internet or social media. Computer hackers love social media users who like to pay bills online, or benefit from using any type of online banking because they hack into their bank accounts and steal their identity to order credit cards, cars, or even houses. Sexually predators look for the young boys, or girls who love to benefit from the use of social media to meet new friends, or start a relationship and the predators brain wash the young kids to get what they want. ...basis over the internet. Immediate news media has had a significant effect on our culture. It allows us to get the news as it happens, and become more aware and involved. The internet would be my biggest competition, and I need to keep this in mind when making decisions for the station. The station has to try and keep up with the internet whenever possible. With this being said, I am faced with the task of deciding what story should be used as the lead story during our next broadcast. Right now I have two stories that have great potential to be lead stories. I need to come up with the solution that will benefit both the television station and the viewers. The first story is about the city council voting to close city parks three days a week to save money. With this story I would like to have as many viewers tuned in as possible, because this is an issue that could affect the lives of those who use the city’s parks. The second story is about the death of a major celebrity. I know this story will get the viewers’ attention, and it will get the station higher ratings which directly affects the station. Although, I feel the city park story is more important and relevant to my viewers, it is my responsibility to keep up the ratings of my station. My solution would be to run the death of the celebrity as the lead story. Although, the importance of this story to my viewers is much less, I know that it is information that people want to hear about. Entertainment is a huge part......

Hum 176 Week 3 Question1

...HUM/176 Week 3 Assignment Hello, I hear so many good things and am so fascinated with what you can do with the Internet. Finding all this information so quickly must make your life very easy. But please tell me: how do you assess the value of all this information you find on the Internet? How can you be sure that it is reliable and credible? Also, I have heard the term “digital divide.” What exactly does it mean, and how do you think this divide could be bridged? Thank you for helping me to understand these issues! Best regards, Your friend Dear Friend, I just wanted to see if I can help you understand a little about the internet and answer some of the questions you had. In the beginning you had to have a phone line, but the big cable companies started to use the cable system to transfer the data making it faster and more reliable. Private companies would start-up web browsers and search engines, internet service providers and email; all quickly changed the landscape and the culture around us. Many people became rich and powerful, but along with them came the scammers and those that were less ethical. Because of them the reliability of what you were reading, viewing or watching became suspect. There was so much money to be made because the net had exploded into almost every household in America. You had asked how to check the reliability of what you are reading; there are many ways to do this. The simplest way is to look at the internet as a vast array...

...Raymond Heller Week 6 Hum. 176 Movies and television has been the biggest forms of entertainment since there creation. These days we have a lot of different types of visual entertainment such as, video games, cell phones, and computers, along with movies and television. Movies were first invented in the 1880’s. Motion pictures were exhibited as a carnival novelty, and then developed into one of the most important tools of communication and entertainment. The movie theater was considered a cheaper and a more simple way to provide entertainment to mass population. Before the creation of movie theaters people would travel a great distance to see major dioramas or to go to amusement parks. The most popular form of visual entertainment is television. Television has had started many arguments about it’s social and cultural impact. Many people have said that television has had a negative impact on children and young adults, influencing their choices, and contributing to increased teenage sex and violence. There are some things that are some things that are on television that children and young adults should not be exposed to, However, parents can put a block on the channels that they do not want their children to be exposed to. Television also has its advantages, you are able to watch the news and be more informed with what is going on in the world, and it is a source of entertainment for the whole family. I think that the social influences of visual entertainment are no......

...society? One of the greatest problems of the social media is lack of privacy. Personal information that you have posted on a website such as Facebook or MySpace can easily be shared throughout the World Wide Web, which in turn can be alarming. A predator can easily get your information and find where you are and the results can be devastating. Security is another very big issue on the web. Many people go onto many different sites and enter their personal information into the computer and it stays in your computer and in turn hackers can gain this information through spyware and cookies. They obtain your information without your knowledge or consent. Many of these problems have been associated with popular social media websites.       4.     How have modern social media sites affected commerce? Include positive and negative examples in your answer. Through social media many businesses are able to show consumers their products without even stepping into their store. This gives the businesses the opportunity to gear up their products awareness to meet the consumer’s needs. The cost for businesses to launch products awareness online is very cost effective, compared to traditional ways of advertising. This would have to pay money out of the consumers pocket for advertising in the newspaper or making signs and maybe a billboard or a commercial on TV. Companies are able to monitor feedback; positive feedback can help boost their sales. Negative feedback can lower......

...ad placements in mobile phone search (advertising’s “third screen,” after television and computer screens). All of Google’s advertising ventures are based on the Internet, Google’s analytical tools, and its enormous computer system. “These new platforms, new innovations, and new services in fact create new opportunities for advertisers,” Google’s Schmidt told a conference of the American Association of Advertising Agencies in 2008 that also included presentations by Apple, Microsoft, and Yahoo! The targeted Internet approaches will be central to the future direction of advertising, Schmidt added. “I think these models are going to be the ones that will really evolve to be the defining models for advertising over the next 10 to 20 years.”4 The current shift of advertising to more measurable, Internet-based forms marks the most wide-sweeping changes in the business since the advent of television. As billions of ad dollars continue to move to new advertising platforms, and as Google’s revenue comes close to eclipsing the total ad revenue of the four major TV networks, history suggests that the advertising-based mass media are sure to change as well. ‘ 344 THE BUSINESS OF MASS MEDIA SS TODAY, ADVERTISEMENTS ARE EVERYWHERE AND IN EVERY MEDIA FORM. Ads take up more than half the space in most daily newspapers and consumer magazines. They are inserted into trade books and textbooks. They clutter Web sites on the Internet. They fill our mailboxes and wallpaper the......

...their lives otherwise. 3. What are the greatest problems of social media for individuals and society? Some of the greatest problems of social media sites is the same problem as it is real life. Cyber bulling is a harsh reality to all social media sites, this can come in the form of rumor starting or people bashing. Just because one involves a keyboard and an internet connection doesn’t make it any less dramatic to the victim of bullying. This can go for business as well, a group of people can destroy a reputation of a company or a product and have it wiped off the map. There are some groups of people who bash other individuals and companies in their spare time, just because their tired of the quiet on whatever site they belong to. 4. How have modern social media sites affected commerce? Include positive and negative examples in your answer. The positive side of using social media to help with commerce is free advertisement and getting the word out about new products through individual members of the website. For instance the site Facebook runs ads on a members home page that connect to whatever the member may have posted as a status, such as products or movie titles or Facebook groups that are for or against a certain person, product, movie, etc. The negative side of this is some individuals may pass negative word around about a movie or a product that could end up the product being dropped or pulled from the shelves. This could happen anyway, but it seems......

...Part One: Being the director of a local new station, I would cover the local story first with a high recap of the celebrity death to follow. When people tune into the news, they want to know what is happening around them first. A celebrity death will make headlines on every kind of network, but the local happenings will only be the local newscast and be more vital. The park story will have more meaning to the people of the community and could affect the everyday happenings for them. With cities closing parks 3 days a week to save money, I would want to the communities to know why and how this will change their everyday lives and schedules. How was closing the parks 3 days a week chosen to save money or some other programs that could be out there. How is the closing of the parks going to affect the city workers jobs that maintain the parks? I would also want to inform the communities of why the money is being saved and what the funds are being used for instead. It would be important to inform the people of options that they may to help get the parks reopened if necessary or who they would try and petition to help with it as well. After covering the local community story of park closures, I would cover the celebrity death with as much accuracy as I could. People will continue to talk about the celebrity death for a long time, so it can be covered after the more pertinent local story. Celebrity stories tend to be very wide spread and have enough coverage with the different......
