PUBLIC EDUCATION IN PITTSBURG |

The Pittsburgh Board of Public Education in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, as required by state law, keeps lists of eligible teachers in order of their rank or standing. According to an “Eligibility List” form made available to applicants, no one may be hired to teach whose name is not within the top 10 percent of the names on the list. In 1996, Anna Reed was in the top 10 percent. She was not hired that year, although four other applicants who placed lower on the list—and not within the tip 10 percent—were hired. In 1997 and 1998, Reed was again in the top 10 percent, but she was not hired until 1999. Reed filed a suit in a federal district court against the board and others. She argued in part that the state’s requirement that the board keep a list constituted an offer, which she accepted by participating in the process to be placed on that list. She claimed that the board breached this contract by hiring applicants who ranked lower.

Hms Polyphonic Marketing Case

...Recommendation: Target the record labels for promotion of HSS reports. Start with the initial enthusiasts like Ken Bunt of Hollywood Records and use their testimonials to win other record labels. Make use of the business connections of the advisory board at Polyphonic to get better reach to decision makers at record labels. Offer free trial reports to convince record labels and an initial lower cost for buyers along with discounts for high volumes ordered over a fiscal year. In the long run, promote Human Music Interface as a complement for Hit Song Science to maximize the revenue earning capability of a song (by ensuring better listener penetration) that is marked as a winner by HSS. Rationale: Target segment rationalization: The record labels constitute the segment with the biggest budget (deepest pocket and hence least price sensitive), highest influence in the music industry and positioned to obtain the greatest benefit out of HSS’s accuracy in music selection suggestions. There are initial enthusiasts in this segment who are already impressed with HSS’s capabilities. The market pie can be restricted to the USA (Exhibit 1) Value for the segment: The HSS program will enable record labels to select only those songs for promotion and advertising that has 80% chances of being successful compared to the 10% success rate offered by the tradition ways of selecting a song. Thus, the labels will considerably reduce the amount spent on marketing (Exhibit 2) and as a result......

...employees, H&M, materials, e.g. If the water is polluted, all will be affected. In the same way, H&M’s using organic materials can not just be a good deal for the farmers with better economic benefits but also can reduce the usage of pesticide and the occurrence of inducing health risks. Henrik Lampa, the CSR manager of H&M (Chemicals Management. n. d.) believed that this solution will make sustainable innovations for the environment and harmless effects on the people’s health. Also, using ecological material means less waste and less usage of non- renewable natural resources. It is a perfect sense for both the business and the environment. Conclusion Water plays a significant role in the value chain of H&M, but this issue imperils the human and the animals’ lives indirectly. Two years ago, their factories’ discharging toxic water into rivers was exposed by the Greenpeace. The issue caused a great reaction that made H&M be lost in a risk of violating the corporate social responsibility. In order to protect the company’s reputation, it has started to plan and has implemented several solutions to solve risks in recent years. It tried to rebuild a new strategy, but it is difficult and full of challenges. And then it set up a three-year partnership with WWF, which is more effective to help the fashion industry to achieve zero discharge of hazardous chemicals before 2020. Lastly, to execute strict requirements on the suppliers to control chemicals emissions is a valid way in......

...many different approaches of management theory. These theories exist because they are no longer relevant in today's environment, but a number of theories have been implemented as scientific management and human relations. Classical management emphasizes productivity by promoting efficient employees with bonuses. Human Relations emphasis on the motivation of the employees of both financial rewards and a variety of social factors , such as praise , a sense of belonging , and a sense of accomplishment . Scientific management uses incentives to encourage workers. This idea comes from Henry Gantt who introduced a bonus system, where workers have an incentive to complete their daily tasks by rewarding them with bonuses. Scientific management assumes employees as a “Rational Economic Man” are motivated by nothing else but money. Employees are paid more on the level of output, bonuses to achieve goals. Nevertheless, Human relations approaches, which are also focused on the welfare of workers, look after, and health needs will increase productivity, as Mayo said. Importantly, it means that workers are generally happier, thus enhancing their work productivity, as demonstrated in the Hawthorne studies .Therefore, this essay will compare and contrast the “Scientific management” and “Human Relations” approaches. During the term of the management classic, it is called a formal management science. The classical theory has focused on a decentralized management system and the relationship......

Hms 230 Building an Organization

...The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) has established a code of ethics to help guide and direct professional behavior. Human services workers will face dilemmas all throughout their career and having this code of ethics will help them in the resolution. One issue that can become a dilemma for a social worker might be when client consent is not required to breach confidentiality. According to Ward (2002), ‘If the client is determined to be actively suicidal, a social worker must intervene, with or without the client’s consent” (p. 43). There will be cases where the confidentiality must be broken in order to best serve all involved. To resolve complex issues one should take into consideration the standards and principles in the code of ethics that are relevant to the situation. The principles are: service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, importance of human relationship, integrity, and competence (Manning, 2003, p. 280). The standard for social workers is the ethical responsibilities to: clients, colleagues, being professional, the social work profession, and to the broader society (Manning, 2003, p. 282). This specific dilemma could be guided by the code of ethics when the general expectation of social workers to keep information confidential does not apply to prevent serious harm to a client or another person. The NASW code of ethics is effective for the social worker in this issue because it explains privacy and confidentiality in detail and has...

...Emerging Issues in Human Resource Management Organizational growth and excellence is driven by strategic and effective human resource management (HRM). The start of the global economy has brought awareness that the only permanent competitive advantage is an organization’s ability to effectively exploit human resources. HRM has become a significant factor in the management for organizational success. While there are many emerging HRM issues, there is one particular area that I found to be most concerning. Thomas Singleton, the Human Resources Director at Lifespan Corporate Services assisted me by proclaiming that, “…as globalization and the information age continue to advance, organizations need to adapt to the changes in technology and the changing issues in management of people.” Furthermore, he stated that managing globalization is a critical issue for human resource managers. Due to globalization and expected changes in technological and the social environment it has become critical for human resource managers to effectively and efficiently handle the competitive environment that affects the performance of organization at domestic as well as global platforms. “Globalization represents the structural making of the world characterized by the free flow of technology and human resources across national boundaries as well as the spread of Information Technology and mass media presenting an ever-changing and competitive business environment” (Česynienė, 2008). ...
