Senescence is part of the aging process starting from adolescence. People go through various aging periods in life that will eventually lead to the late adulthood stage or old age. This is a natural stage where a person will reminisce and reflect on the various struggles they went through and accomplishments they made. The late adulthood stage is a period where reflection on the choices that were made within one’s life while growing up, whether they were good or bad, happy or sad are remembered. The different views and issues that a person will experience within the late adulthood stage will be discussed below.

How Can Individuals Promote Health and Wellness into Late Adulthood and Mitigate the Negative Effects of Aging?
To promote health and wellness within the late adulthood stage a person needs to get the proper rest because sleep is important for the brain and body to function properly. A senior will us selective optimization with compensation when and if they are capable of driving themselves places. It is important for seniors to take care of their nutrition and stay at a healthy stable weight. In this stage of life, fewer calories are needed but it is important for them to eat a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables including complex carbohydrates like grains and cereals (Berger, 2008). To help seniors maintain an active memory they should get plenty of the Vitamins B, B12 and Folic Acid (Berger, 2008). Seniors should maintain a healthy balanced diet and exercise so their muscles will not stiffen up. Some of the exercises that are great for seniors to do are walking, weight lifting and strength training with supervision which can help slow down osteoporosis and should be done about a half hour a day (Berger, 2008). I do, however, have a lot of respect for this age group because they have been through so much already in their lives and because of this I think that much can be learned from them. She is 71 years of age. Her health is very good; in fact I forget that she is even 71 years. I would guess her to be early sixty’s. She is very active and has no trouble doing daily activities. During the summer she has a large garden she takes care of herself and she also mows her lawn on her own. All of her senses are still in great condition. She says she does not notice any difference in hearing, smell, or taste. She does wear glasses, but has her entire life. The decline in vision and hearing is greatest in individuals aged 75 years and older (Santrock 343). So, with her exceptional health, she may be good for a while. Her circulatory seems to be in good condition. She has good blood pressure and is at a healthy weight. She smoked for a large portion of her life, but she quit about ten years ago. Her lungs seem to still be pretty strong due to her exercise and high activity. She has no problems with arthritis......

These changes can range from retirement, physical and mental issues and/or loss of a spouse, children1 or close friend; however, these changes can be very terrifying. Later adulthood can be divided into two groups, the young old which are the ages of 65-74 and many of them still work, travel and have regular social lifestyles. Old old ages 75+ and many struggle with keeping their independence, loss of social interaction, activities and all the medical issues that have arose in their life. Zimbardo researching how prisoners and guards learned submissive and authoritarian roles. There was an ad placed in the newspaper by Zimbardo seeking male subjects to participate in his research experiment. There was a $15 per day compensation offered to the chosen participants. There were roughly 75 people to respond to the professors ad. However there were only 25 chosen to participate in the experiment needed for a study of prison life. Zimbardo designed his experiment to go the duration of 15 days. The men who were selected to participate in the experiment were separated into two groups, the prisoners in one group, guards in the other. Zimbardo informed them all their rights would be violated and they were to be harassed. Phillip K. Changes in development in late adulthood are not as progressed as in the earlier stages of life (Preisser, 1997). Developmental stages in one’s life are an important part of the journey of life. Discussion on the end of one’s life is not a pleasant one, but it is something that everyone has to go through when it is the end of one’s life span and developmental process. Life span development goes through the cycles and stages of infancy, early childhood, middle childhood, adolescence, early or emerging adulthood, middle adulthood, and late adulthood; it is the definitive culmination to the end of life (Berger, 2008). Descending toward the end of life in late adulthood can be despairing, but it does not have to be if one has psychologically prepared for and has accepted that death is inevitable. Senescence, primary aging and secondary aging each take place at this stage, but perspective, quality, and joy of life is still relevant. Eric Erickson, psychologist, defines the late adulthood stage—ages 55 or 65 to death, basically as adults assessing what their lives have cultivated throughout its development. Erickson’s theory of the final stage of development sequence is “integrity versus despair” (Berger, 2008). According to Berger, Erickson proposes in this eighth stage that the two opposing forces reference: Life brings many, quite realistic reasons for experiencing despair: aspects of the present that causes unremitting pain; aspects of a future that are uncertain and frightening.
