1. The core problem or issue in the case

The core issue in this case is the “tradeoff decision between revenue generation and attendance”. Further, we can say that these issues are problematic like: * Maximizing ticket revenue without charging high price for it. * Peoples’ willingness to pay for specific event * Appeal of the sport (global and local) * Stage events (opening and closing ceremonies) * Particular team or athlete * Limited guidance for pricing tickets from past events. * Every city’s taste and preferences matter * Reach of the games by location * Internet ticketing * Recent global financial crisis * Maximizing attendance by selling to the right person and ensuring their presence. * Generating genuine enthusiasm is important * No empty arenas and stadia * Knowledgeable spectators * Selling ticket for the infamous sports in preliminary rounds like table tennis, archery, handball, etc. * Price differentiation among each sport. * Promoting every sport * Delicate issue * Secondary market for tickets.

2. The dilemma of Williamson – explain the stances and support one of them

Paul Williamson, head of ticketing for 2012 Olympic Games, he and his team is facing the dilemma while developing policies for pricing and distribution of tickets for the games. The following are the options available to them:

I. It is mentioned in case that due to the importance of ticketing for the games they have strong incentives to maximize revenue from this source. It contributes around $650 million to the revenue. This is very important for the financial legacy of these games.

They are one of the most renowned events in the world, and have the ability of attracting the attention of a worldwide audience and to produce important impacts on the country or region that hosts them. After hosting the Olympics two times in 1908 and 1948, London will beat the records this year by being the first country holding three Olympic Games and, in the same way as the previous Games, the 2012 Olympics are going to have major impacts on the country on several industries (Australian Olympic Committee, 2009). This essay will mainly discuss the political, social and economic long-term impacts that hosting the 2012 Olympic Games will have on the city of London in relation to the Events Industry. This first part of the essay will discuss the political impacts of the Olympics on the Events Industry. Over time, the Olympic Games have become “irreparably intertwined with politics” and have generated a good political image on the hosting country as they served as a tool of global publicity. It appears that the Olympic ticket market is inefficient, as evidenced by the presence of scalpers, and segmented between Ticketmaster, eBay, and scalpers. Based on information in the article, I make the assumption that demand exceeds supply because almost all tickets are being sold at or above face value and the ballot process left many without tickets. This is due to the fact that there is a fixed supply and a relatively low price ceiling. Graph 1 depicts the current Olympic ticket market in terms of supply and demand. Graph 1: 2. Were the London Olympics an Economically Rational Decision?

When looking at whether or not hosting the Olympics was a rational economic decision, this can be related to the basic economic problem whereby we have infinite wants but only finite resources. By choosing to host the London Olympics we would have to cut our spending on other sectors of the economy as large amounts of money would needed to be invested, estimated to be £9.9bn. To decide whether it was a good decision to host them we need to know what the next best thing we could have done with the money is, the opportunity cost. With the estimated cost of the Olympics being £.9.9bn, there is a considerable amount of other things that the money could have been spent on. For example, we could have purchased roughly 120 Cristiano Ronaldo’s which might have resulted in us actually winning a football tournament. An issue which has come up in the news a lot recently has been the shortage of helicopters in Iraq, instead of hosting the Olympics we could have purchased 440 new chinook helicopters. Alternatively, we could have funded the country’s A&E’s hospitals for 5 years, many may argue this may have been more helpful to the country than hosting the Olympics. This revitalization was intended to create jobs and generate tax revenue for the city. To accomplish this, the independent agency was given authority to acquire the properties by buying them or eminent domain. The independent agency acquired majority of the properties, but some property owners refused to sell. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is the parent non-profit organization responsible for selecting the host city, establishing contractual guidelines, and managing the copyrights, trademarks and other assets of the Games. The London Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG) is entrusted with the responsibility of managing the 2012 Games. The Olympic Delivery Authority is the 2012 Games authority responsible for providing the infrastructure for these games.
