Rules for High Performance Organizations (graded) |
This week our text discusses the definition of organizational behavior and in particular its applied focus, and our lecture focuses on high performance organizations (HPOs). Right at the intersection of those would be the “Ten Golden Rules of High Performance” listed below. What do you think should be added to the list? Is there anything on the list that you disagree with? Please support your opinion with evidence from our readings and also from your own work and life experience. Please also remember to respond to your classmates’ posts to stimulate further discussion.

Ten Golden Rules of High Performance

1. Hire by committee – make sure recruits talk to their future colleagues.
2. Cater to every need – make it easy, not hard, for people to perform.
3. Pack them in – put people to work close to one another.
4. Make coordination easy – use technology to keep people talking together.
5. Eat your own dog food – make use of the company products.
6. Encourage creativity – allow freedom to come up with new ideas.
7. Strive for consensus – remember that “many are better than few.”
8. Don’t be evil – live tolerance and respect.
9. Data-driven decisions – do the analysis and stay on track.

Social loafing occurs when people work less hard in groups than they would individually. An effective team/group according to the text is one that achieves a high level of task performance, member satisfaction and team viability. One of the Keller student mottos: "you get out what you put in" relates to avoiding social loafing in the online community. Ways to social loaf: 1. wait until others post in a discussion to avoid doing any of the initial foot work--then you can just comment on someone else's work and still engage in the discussion. 2. Only read what the professor writes and answer his/her queries and questions, avoiding interacting with the other team members and thereby not really gaining anything through the process of discussion. 3. avoid reading the textbook on a deep and intimate level by cruising around the message board and picking up the application of the material--as you know this is how you will be tested anyhow! The text uses the show Survivor as an example. One contestant who wasn't very physically able is simply to mind the fire overnight, but doesn't and sleeps instead, knowing that one of the others will "cover" for him anyway. Their famous slogan Save money Live Better is a basic belief of Sam Walton, who is the founder of the company. ...MGMT 591: Leadership and Organizational Behavior Project Proposal Overview of Organization The organization that will be the topic of discussion in my final project paper is ADC Telecommunications. ADC is a publicly traded, global, manufacturing telecommunications company whose headquarters are in the Twin Cities. We primarily sell copper and fiber products to customers like Verizon and AT&T/Cingular. Like many other telecommunication companies, ADC went thru a significant down-turn around 2000. Not only did locations get shut-down and hundreds of people got laid off, the morale and culture of ADC changed. ADC went from having a top benefits package to having a decent benefits package. They used to have all types of employee incentives and appreciation activities. Now the employees are lucky if they get a caramel apple in the fall and an appreciation meal at the holidays. Rewards for employees doing well are not there anymore. With the down-turn, ADC lost a lot of their highly skilled, highly valuable employees.
