..."Hello, my name is Laurel, but my friends call me “Snot”. I am an African American and in the fourth grade. I am going to tell you a story about my adventure at Camp Crescendo, a summer camp for fourth graders near the suburbs of Atlanta, Georgia. I announced that by the second day of camp, all the girls in my Brownie troop had decided they were going to "kick the asses" of every girl in Brownie Troop 909, who were all white girls. The other black girls and myself took a dislike to the white girls when we first saw them. Arnetta, our ringleader, said they smelled "like Chihuahuas. Wet Chihuahuas." When she said that they were like "Caucasian Chihuahuas," we all went into fits of laughter. They regard the word Caucasian as a hilarious term of abuse that can be used in almost any situation. We all have seen whites before but have never had much to do with them. But the ten white girls we encounter at the camp are closer to us and, therefore, more real and capable of exciting envy and hatred. At the end of the first day at camp, Arnetta reports she heard one of the white girls refer to Daphne, a black girl, as "a nigger." On prompting by Arnetta, Daphne, a quiet girl, nods her head to confirm that the derogatory term was used. Arnetta tells the other girls that they cannot let the white girls get away with using that word about them. She told us that we must teach the white girls a lesson. Janice suggests that they put daddy-long-legs in the white girls' sleeping bags, and......

My Foavirite Person

...My favorite Poet Throughout the twenty one years of my life. I have had the privilege of knowing about many poets and dramatists. However, there is one particular poet whose name is etched in my memory. Whenever somebody asks about my favorite poet, his name will automatically flash into my mind. He is Michael Madhusudan Dutt, was a popular 19th century Bengali poet, dramatist and the first sonnet writer in Indian Subcontinent. Michael Madhusudan Dutt was born in Jessore District, East Bengal, India (now in Bangladesh). His early schooling was in Bengali and Persian. In 1837 he entered Hindu College where most of his education was in English. Early exposure to English education and European literature at home and in Kolkata made him desire to emulate the proverbially stiff upper-lip Englishman in taste, manners and intellect. One of the early impressions was that of his teacher, Capt. D.L.Richardson at Hindu College. His adolescence, coupled with the spirit of intellectual enquiry convinced him that he was born on the wrong side of the planet, and that conservative Hindu society in early nineteenth century Bengal had not yet developed the spirit of rationalistic enquiry and appreciation of greater intellectual sophistry to appreciate his talents. He espoused the view that free thinking and post Enlightenment West would be more receptive to his intellectual acumen and creative genius. In this, perhaps he forgot the color of his skin, as he was to realize later on in life...

Important Person in My Life

...An important person in your life Everybody has an important person in their life who can motivate, share moment and be there for them when they needed. I think the most important person in the life of everyone is the member of his family. The simple word “family” can conjure up many meanings, images and emotions. They could be warm and pleasant, at the same time they can be sad and dismal. But for most, the word “family” is one of the greatest words in the world, it brings a lot of unforgettable and joyful memories about their childhood and past, enormous number of happy and funny moments, and of course it brings the picture of your family members, whom you truly love, who really mean a lot for you and who are the most influential and important people in your life. Your family members simply cared about you when you were sick even if it meant staying up all the night just to make sure your fever stayed down. There were also times when they let you make your own choices and allowed you to suffer the consequences it brings if you made a bad decision. Sometimes they pushed you in certain directions and had high expectations for you. Your family is not only people that you biologically related to and those who will love you unconditionally, but they are your first friends, whom you can trust and always count on when you need them. Family members have the biggest influence on you, through their love, discipline, encouragement and living. One of the important persons in the......

...of the world plays video games, and thousands of people are playing as you read this. Video games can do many great things, like help people grow their imaginations, provide critical thinking skills, create team players and hone social skills, and it has even been said to help medical surgeons improve hand-eye-coordination, helping them to cause 37% less errors while performing surgeries. But along with its acknowledgement, it has its discredit. People are now proclaiming after the previous shootings over the years that video games cause the gamers to become violent, due to the fact that some of these “shooters” were video gamers themselves. But is it truly the video games that make people violent. Since 1958 with the invention of the first video game, “Tennis for Two” sociologists have been studying how video games effect human interactions over time. One Benedict Carey stated that, “The issue is especially relevant today, because the games are more realistic and bloodier than ever...” What he means by this is that as we progress into the future we learn to advance and better ideas and other items. And with the current market, video games holding the use of violence, drugs, nudity, and action are at a high. So in order to have a higher income companies such as Treyarch, Nintendo, and Sony try to make the best and most realistic type of games that the public wants. In This case being the type that gets the players’ adrenalin pumping, leading to more realistic, and bloodier......

My First Bike

...Hippensteel Eng. 111 3, September 2014 First Time Riding a Bike It was a hot June summer day. I could feel the warmth from the sun on my face as I stood in my room looking out the window watching all the other kids riding their bikes. I felt like I was the only Kid in the world who did not have a bike. I grew up in Brooklyn, New York, where there was not anywhere to ride a bike, so I never learned. When I was ten, we moved to Tampa Florida to an apartment complex and all the kids were riding bikes. Many kids don’t remember how they learned to ride a bike but, for me it was a day I will never forget. I ran down the stairs, passed the kitchen, jumped over Lady, who was our germen shepherd. She was so old that she never moved. Then I suddenly stopped as I approached my parents who were on the couch watching T.V. I sat down in the living room chair, for what seemed like forever before a commercial came on. Then I thought for a moment, how I could ask them for a bike, but my mind went blank. I just suddenly said in a loud quick voice,” Can I have a bike! I really want to learn how to ride one, and I’m almost eleven.” Then my dad said in a deep voice,” I’ll think about it.” I had a birthday coming up that next week and I was hoping that I would get my first bike. I mentioned it every day in hope that they would not forget. A few days later my parents and I were out for the day when we stopped at a yard sale, it was there I saw my first bike. It was a rusty bike with a big......

Essay Written in First Person

...stayed and talked to both him and his wife for about 15 minutes and then on making my rounds throughout the hospital before returning to my call room.  At 1310 I heard the overhead page for "Code Blue MICU (Medical intensive care unit) bed ten”.  I responded to the code and saw that it was the woman from bed 420.  I intubated her and managed her airway while the code was in progress.  CPR was performed, the woman was defibrillated repeatedly and ACLS medications were given intravenously.  The code continued on for what seemed like a very long time.  I looked at her pupils and they were fixed and dilated.  Residents then decided to insert chest tubes and considered opening her chest.  In my mind I thought of the dear man who brought her in and about how much he loved her.  It made me so sad to think of him leaving the hospital alone after so many years with her. He was so unaware of what was going on in MICU bed 10 where his wife lay lifeless, naked and bloody.  It seemed like a massacre was in progress.  I had connected with this woman and her husband and I felt a personal connection to them which overwhelmed me.  I asked the team leader to please "call the code” as her pupils were fixed and dilated and any further efforts to resuscitate her would be futile.  He did and I left the room.  I never saw her husband again but I have thought of him so many times since.  Even as I write this I feel my eyes watering.  This experience forever changed the way I view our healthcare......

My Most Influential Person

...The most influential person in my life is my mother. She taught me how to keep loving through the good and the bad. My mothers love is unconditional, it is a trait i wish to equip throughout my life. I was about 13 when I found out that my mother loved me unconditionally. The moment I lost my mothers necklace (that my grandmother gave to her) I thought she was going to kill me. I had never seen my mother so mad at me. I began to cry as she was yelling at me;I ran into my room, closed the door, and wept all night. The next day my mom walked into my room and told me she was sorry with the most regretful look on her face. I knew my mother was truly sorry. As we hugged in closure, she started to cry on my shoulder. I told my mom I will do anything to find it, but my mothers response was "That necklace will never amount to how much I love you". I will forever be amazed about my mothers love and care for me. She is also incredible at getting things done. It does not matter of the situation, my mother always comes through with whatever was needed. She puts others needs before hers and I love that about her. Whenever someone asks for something, she is always the first one to deliver. When I play softball we usually have 2 games a day, during these games somebody always runs out of water. My mother being the caring person she is, offers to go buy them water from a store near by. During are breaks between games she rushes to go get water. When she returns she comes back with water,......

My First Book

...challenges as I could possibly have from any and every person I have known. If anyone ever dared me to do an attainable task, I could never turn them down. One such challenge I received was to read an entire fiction book series of at least 6 books. After a period of discussion it was finally decided that it should be a classic series for my first and it ended up being Harry Potter on popular demand. This challenge eventually ended up being one of the few challenges I ever had to encounter where I was least bit motivated to actually complete it. Seeing how little effort I put in to complete the challenge and my resistance to give up on the challenge a new condition was added limiting the time I could take to finish the challenge. The time period allotted to finish the entire series was fixed at a month so as to give me a certain sense of urgency which did not help in the slightest thanks to my usual habit of always procrastinating. At the end of the third week all I did read was the first chapter of the first book with minimum interest. It all felt like reading a regular school text book and somehow try to get through it all and finish it off. At one point the school textbooks did seem more appealing than the book at hand. Eventually it came down to just a week till the end of the allotted time. Finally during the last week I decided to finally read and at least try finishing off at least one book. I chose to start fresh from first chapter and read 3 chapters daily and finish......

First Person Authorization

...First Person Authorization…..Is Objection an Option? Cindy Sleeper Ottawa University December 7, 2015 First Person Authorization….Is Objection an Option? Midwest Transplant Network (MTN), is a not-for-profit Organ Procurement Organization (OPO), which provides procurement services for the recovery of organs and tissues utilized for transplant purposes. Some individuals choose, while living, to become donors of these tissues upon their death. This is termed a “first-person authorization” and is a legal binding document that cannot be revoked by the family or legal next-of-kin. However, there are occasions where families fiercely object to donation and MTN must reflect on what path is the most ethical to pursue; follow the wishes of the donor or concede to the objection of the family. This paper will examine the three theories of ethics: utilitarian, principle-based, and virtue and discuss which theory applies to this ethical dilemma. Introduction Midwest Organ Bank was originally founded in 1973 with the sole purpose of providing organ transplant and procurement services to transplant centers and hospitals throughout Kansas and Western Missouri communities. Organs recovered for transplant included kidneys, liver, heart, lung, pancreas, and intestines. In 1990 Midwest Organ Bank added tissue recovery services to their scope of practice to enable the transplant of life-enhancing tissues. These tissues included heart valves, bone, skin, and blood vessels. In......

First Grade Encounters of the Worst Kind

...excited when the school year started in August of 2007. My “baby” was going to be in first grade! But I’ll have you know, there is nothing babyish about first grade; it’s much more of a “manly” year, according to the first grader boys in the know. What we did not anticipate was the unexpected drama that came along with the excitement of the new year; surprisingly, it had nothing to do with chasing girls. * * * * * I had been told by Collin’s kindergarten teacher that he was an advanced reader because he tested at the equivalency of a second grader. I like to think it had something to do with the amount of time I spent reading him books when I could barely keep my eyes open, to where I have now memorized nearly every Dr. Seuss book and can quote them backwards in my sleep. In reality, it probably had something to do with Sesame Street and the wonderful program director at the after-school program. During the summer prior to first grade, Collin really wanted to read Bridge to Terabithia. We had watched the movie together and both loved it, so I got the book without any hesitation. Collin, of course, excitedly shared about the book with his new first-grade teacher, Ms. Pretentious, and the class. This, somehow, elicited quite a drama. At “Back to School Night”, as parents sat in the tiny little first grade chairs, we listened to Ms. Pretentious introduce herself and describe her experiences during the first week of school. It came in the form of a 20-minute......
