Personal Career Analysis: Nurse Practitioner “They may forget your name, but they will never forget how you made them feel.” This quote said by Maya Angelou is very applicable to a nursing career, especially for a nurse practitioner. A nurse practitioner is an advanced registered nurse that coordinates and provides patient care. This field is all about helping others. The study of anatomy and physiology of the body is very interesting, and this career is all about knowing how the body works and treating it. Many people who chose this career get inspired by their own doctors or nurses. One might also choose this career because of a past experience of seeing how this career affects other people’s lives. Just like any job in the medical field nurse practitioners have a very interesting job. They see new things every day. The main, most interesting nature of the job is to help patients by examining and treating them. A nurse practitioner can do a lot of things a physician can do. They can diagnose and treat illnesses, prescribe medications for common acute illnesses, and order tests like X-rays and EKGs(“Nurse Practitioner,” 2014). The work environment for nurse practitioners can vary. Some work in a hospital, physician’s offices, outpatient care centers, and also in schools. In order to be a nurse practitioner one must first obtain a bachelor’s degree in nursing, known as a registered nurse. After becoming a RN one must earn a master’s degree from a two year accredited program for nurse practitioners. In the master’s program one will not only work in the classroom, but also get clinical experience(“Bureau of Labor Statistics,” 2014). ...I’m not one of those people who grew up always knowing that they wanted to become a nurse. I went through the usual childhood fantasies: pilot, lawyer, scientist, architect, etc. But, never a nurse. While it was perfect and beautiful and completely orchestrated, I knew almost immediately after the birth that if I were ever blessed with another baby, I wanted to do things differently. Did you know that Jan 27th is school nurse day? Or did you know that in 1783 a black slave named James Derham worked as a nurse in New Orleans, eventually earning enough money to buy his freedom and move to Philadelphia, where he studied medicine and became a doctor? And I also bet that you didn’t know that the largest demand for Licensed Practical Nurses through 2110 will be in nursing homes? Or that the 4th week of May is National Nurses week, which is coming up pretty soon. And May 8th is national Student Nurses’ day (Start a nurse staffing agency). Well I didn’t know any of that either until I started my paper on my nursing career. In December 2010 I finished my schooling for a Licensed Practical Nurse at the JCTC Campus in the accelerated program. I chose to start out at that campus because its only five minutes from my house, and it was only for about ten and a half months. Now that the LPN program is over and I have completed my one hundred and twenty internship hours and passed the NCLEX exam, I am taking a couple more classes along with the ADN program courses.
