About O*NET

The O*NET program is the nation's primary source of occupational information. Central to the project is the O*NET database, containing information on hundreds of standardized and occupation-specific descriptors. The database, which is available to the public at no cost, is continually updated by surveying a broad range of workers from each occupation. Information from this database forms the heart of O*NET OnLine, an interactive application for exploring and searching occupations. The database also provides the basis for our Career Exploration Tools, a set of valuable assessment instruments for workers and students looking to find or change careers. The Occupational Information Network (O*NET) is being developed under the sponsorship of the US Department of Labor/Employment and Training Administration (USDOL/ETA) through a grant to the North Carolina Department of Commerce. This hierarchical model starts with six domains, describing the day-to-day aspects of the job and the qualifications and interests of the typical worker. O-Fold

...Business Strategy Case 3 The O-Fold Kyle Huffman Olds College Submission Date: February 14 2013 O-Fold Business Opportunity Introduction Alex Richards was a 4.0 GPA student, double majoring in finance and accounting. Before taking a trip to Colorado, Alex was faced with a problem: whether or not to take a suit on the plane, he did not want to wear it on the plane nor pack a suit case due to having the clothing wrinkle. He came up with the idea of the O-Fold, a cylindrical tube that clothes could be wrapped around, secured with straps, packed into tight spaces, and arrive wrinkle free. After completing a preliminary patent search online and finding nothing similar to his idea, Alex had to make a choice whether or not to start a company. He came up with four options, sell the idea, license the idea, outsource production, or use a crawl-walk-run strategy. External analysis With more then $5 billion in sales the luggage industry strengthened, as the baby boomer generation reached its peak travel ages (45-54). Net Neutrality

...2014 The Internet has come a long way since being brought up around the world. Millions of people access the internet for many uses such as communicating with friends and family, accessing vital information, paying bills, online shopping, and the list goes on and on. But there is now one phenomenon that many people are unaware of, net neutrality. Net neutrality is the paradigm where ISP providers and governments restrict the access from certain Internet web sites to the public. Web sites should be open to everybody browsing on the Internet and not be restricted. We can look in depth to this dilemma by using ethical theories to help us out. When it comes to utilitarian position regarding net neutrality, many sites should be restricted because it is the greatest good for the greatest number of people. But when it comes to the deontologist position regarding net neutrality all sites should be able to be accessed with no restrictions because it should adhere to the obligations and duties of ISP providers and governments (Boulos, 2008). Utilitarian ethics has the basis to get the greatest good for the greatest number of people. When it comes to net neutrality this means blocking or restricting many web sites to the millions of users. These decisions are made by ISP providers and by governments. For example Verizon has been paying money to ISP companies to make their bandwidth larger so it could be faster than other competing companies, giving them the upper hand (Bloomberg......

Net Neutrality

...The idea of net neutrality has been around since the invention of the telegram and telephone system. This idea of neutrality led to the passage of the Communications Act of 1934 which regulates telecommunications by prohibiting preferential treatment and unfair consumer costs (The Communications Act of 1934). However, the term “net neutrality” as it pertains to the internet was first used by Tim Wu in 2003 in his article “Network Neutrality, Broadband Discrimination” (Wu, 2003). In March of 2005, the concept became more well known when the internet service provider (ISP) Madison River Communications was caught blocking all of its subscribers from using a voice over internet protocol (VoIP) service called Vonage. The company blocked this service because their own telecommunications service was competing against Vonage’s lower prices, made possible by utilizing customers’ internet connections instead of telephone lines (Ante & Crockett, 2005). Vonage made a complaint to the FCC, and Madison River Communications had to pay a $15,000 fine (Regan, 2005). Later in 2005, the FCC released an internet policy statement, which outlined support for an early version of net neutrality. This statement was meant to “encourage broadband deployment and preserve and promote the open and interconnected nature of the public Internet” by adopting the following principles: • allowing consumers access to the lawful internet content of their choice, • allowing consumers access to run......

"O Me! O Life" Analysis

...Oh me! Oh life! of the questions of these recurring, Of the endless trains of the faithless, of cities fill’d with the foolish, Of myself forever reproaching myself, (for who more foolish than I, and who more faithless?) Of eyes that vainly crave the light, of the objects mean, of the struggle ever renew’d, Of the poor results of all, of the plodding and sordid crowds I see around me, Of the empty and useless years of the rest, with the rest me intertwined, The question, O me! so sad, recurring—What good amid these, O me, O life? Answer. That you are here—that life exists and identity, That the powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse. Abstract Meaning In his poem “O Me, O Life,” Walt Whitman questions the futility of life. Whitman ponders on the rapid advancement of our world through economy’s eyes. Though he admits to the disappointment that can be felt through human achievement, he also conducts an argument through a powerful metaphor at the end of his poem recognizing the importance of human purpose, “Answer… That the powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse.” Whitman argues that every person is contributing to human existence because they are living and breathing. He connects this idea to the rest of his poem by using a question and answer format. At the beginning of his poem he introduces his final argument, “Oh me! Oh life! of the questions of these recurring,/ Of the endless trains of......

O*Net Resource Center Analysis

...Week 3 O*NET Resource Center Student’s Name University MGMT410, Professor XYZ, Date Learning Questions Question 1: How easy was it to find the specific occupation you were looking for, and how comprehensive was the information provided about that occupation? I currently hold an operations role and searching for “Operations Manager” was relatively easy on O*NET. “The O&NET program is the nation’s primary source of occupational information and it contains information on hundreds of standardized and occupation-specific descriptors” (O*NET, n.d.). Once a person familiarizes with the O*NET Content Model, which is its conceptual foundation, the search engines become easy to understand. The top two search returns for me included Wind Energy Operations Manages and General & Operations Managers. Interesting fact emerged by reviewing both that gave good representation of skills, overall knowledge, abilities and work activities necessary to be successful in these roles that correspond to my experience with what the role demands in my current work environment. For operations type of positions it is imperative to be able to work independently, be initiative, rely heavily on analytical thinking and have the leadership skills that take charge and can motivate other team members. It was comforting to see that the real world experience matches the O*NET comprehensive information provided. Certain discrepancies are expected as each industry is slightly different but in......

Drift Nets

...Drift nets or gill nets are large nets for capturing fish. They hang vertically in the water column by weights at the bottom and are allowed to drift with the tide. Because drift netting can capture a large quantity of fish at the same time, it is a method that is commonly used to catch tuna, swordfish and salmon. Gill netting is so effective that their use is closely monitored and regulated by fisheries management and enforcement agencies. Fish can be caught in several ways from tangled in the net to held by the mesh slipping behind the opercula of the fish. During a trial driftnet fishery in Canadian waters in 1987, one vessel killed more than 200 sea mammals and 1000 birds. After this experiment, Canada refused to permit driftnet fishing. Without doubt, drift netting is not only detrimental to wildlife species but it is tremendously wasteful. About half of the catch either falls back into the water as the nets are being retrieved or is crushed to useless pulp by tons of fish and successfully retrieved fish are usually damaged and must be sold at a reduced price. However, there are countries and regions who have taken this into consideration and reduced this problem. For example, the European Union banned the use of drift nets for no longer than 2.5 km. Some organizations such as North Pacific Anadromous Fish Commission (NPAFC) that include Canada, the United States, the Russian Federation, Korea and Japan have already been monitoring four million square kilometres of the......

...over the 25%, but a several thousand below the median level. For the occupation I am working towards, the individuals I know already in the occupation are at more around the 25% than the median. An interesting fact I did see and looked a little into was my occupation, both the one I am in and the one I am working my way towards are both offered through an apprenticeship program which advertises on this site and offers a paycheck while you learn your trade in lieu of raking up thousands in student loans. I must say this would have been a welcome site two years ago when I started with school at the age of 39. I could have been done and in my chosen occupation without the $30,000 in debt. 2. What did you think of the occupations O*NET suggested as matching your skills? Was the occupation you are in or preparing for among those listed? The number one suggested occupation was Chief Executive which honestly made me laugh. I have never aspired to be a C-Level Executive though I know I could do it, the pressure of those types of positions is not something I wish to introduce into my life. Number 13 (I realize they are not actually numbered) is Lawyer. I am a legal assistant working my way up to Senior Legal Assistant/ paralegal so that isn’t too far off from my goal. Being a lawyer is something I could see myself doing but I fear the cost involved as well as another three years in school, so Senior Legal Assistant is acceptable. I did not see Legal Assistant/......

This is definitely something that everyone should be educated about coming out of high school and college so that they can take advantage of what is out there, especially those who cannot afford college at this time. Having a certification now a days in some fields is just as good as a degree. Who says that a few years down the line when you get established you won’t go after your degree. Not only do you have the experience and certification, but a degree on top of that would make you valuable and in some cases indispensable. 2. What did you think of the occupations O*NET suggested as matching your skills? Was the occupation you are in or preparing for among those listed? I did see that Chief Executive was ranked number one, I think that would be the ideal final stop on my journey in life. Ultimately if I were to get into politics Chief Executive as in President of the United States has a nice ring to it. As far as my degree choice of Operations Manager, in H-E-B land that would be a Team Leader in our manufacturing plants. In store, an Operations Manager is an Assistant Store Director.
