How to Succeed in Masters Degree Program

...Ideas Learned from Graduate Student Orientation Course Starting a new degree program can be a challenge, especially if one has been out of school for some time. There is an old saying, “Well begun is half done.” (“Proverb Hunter”, 2012) Having a good foundation and ideas at the beginning allows easier and more efficient transition throughout the program. The ideas obtained from the Graduate Student Orientation Course are not something new. However, they can be compared to the missing pieces of a treasure map that has been put away up in the attic. Finding a treasure without them may be possible, but very challenging. By having those missing those missing pieces, the path to the treasure can be clear. I obtained many different ideas from the course, but there are three main ideas, which I believe will be very helpful through my degree program. They are (a) time management, (b) effective writing skills, and (c) use of CSU Online Library. Time Management According to Eerde (2003), managing time gives a person a sense of control of time. When a person has a control, it reduces tension and stress. Minimizing those two factors results in a positive performance and outcome. Being stressed about completing a certain task usually results in procrastination. One will try to find a justification to not complete the task right away, because the task will seem too overwhelming when he/she does not have adequate control of time. When the task can be justified as......

It helps when making this decision to look at all the pros and cons. By doing this it will aid the perspective student in making a final decision. The first thing a perspective student should do is look at the common ground that either online learning and campus learning share to gain a better understanding of what to look for. Both online and campus learning offer the student a higher education and the way to achieve a degree. Most likely, the schools follow the same grading system with 4.0 and below. Another similarity is that both offer classes pertaining to the degree the student is looking to receive. Therefore, the student receives the necessary knowledge to continue in the career path that they choose. Online learning and Campus schools both allow the student to obtain a degree between two and four years. Associate Degree vs Bachelors Degree

...Associate-Degree Level versus Baccalaureate-Degree Level According to the Institute of Medicine (IOM), the improvement in quality of education for health professionals is necessary to continue to meet the needs of the health care delivery system. (“Health Professions,” 2003). Nursing has evolved throughout the centuries; from the male-dominated religious caregivers dated as far back as 250 B.C., to the registration of nursing created by Elizabeth Grace Neil in 1901. Moreover, the continuous rapid advances and demand in health care has prompted alternatives in educational programs. Mildred Montag, the founder of the 2 year Associates degree, created this program to combat scarcity in nursing during World War II. (Creasia and Friberg, 2011, p.15). Countless research and investigation has been conducted to analyze the differences between nurses' competencies prepared at the Associate-degree level to the Baccalaureate-degree level in dealing with the outcome of patient care. Differences in Curriculum The Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) is a 2-year program that focuses on clinical experiences and technical competence. On the other hand, the Bachelor’s Degree of Science in Nursing (BSN) is a 4-year program that focuses on preparing professional nurses for acute care, community-based treatment, and the inception of leadership and administrative positions. The BSN level integrates with the infrastructure of knowledge that was built during training at the ASN level in......

Pursuing My Bachelor's Degree

...order to achieve one's dreams. In addition, I believe that, to be the best at something, one must always strive to excel. This is why I wish to receive my Bachelor's degree in advertising at your renowned institution. I have chosen advertising as my field of study, because I have been impressed with my father's success and innovative ideas since an early age. He owns an advertising company in Dubai and, while I was young, he became my mentor. When I started working with my father, I enjoyed watching his advertising creativity at work in everything he did, and the way he sat with the guys in the office, where everyone just threw ideas around, and where my dad would express his approval or vehement disapproval to his assistants because they did not do exactly what he told them to do! Every time I was there to watch them, I couldn't help but throw in my two-cents worth of ideas, even though everyone usually laughed at them. But on rare occasions, they would tell me that my ideas were very creative, and that I had what it took to become a great advertiser; and I was only 16-years-old! I decided that I would like to get my education at a fine institution in a foreign country in order to be able to return to my father's business and help him expand it to international status. If I am given the opportunity to earn my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in advertising, I would pursue my dream to achieve that, and accept all the challenges and do whatever it takes to get there....

She does a lot of research into the sociology in education and social class inequality. The article “Degree by Default” gets into the reason(s) behind why graduates from high school go to college. She Followed 34 first-year students from diverse backgrounds, male and female students, and even first generation students to children that had parents that went to college. With all the diverse students chosen, she wanted to find out why students went to college, consequences of going to college when you aren’t really sure you want to go, and the “college for all” effect on society. The students she chose for her research had varying reasons for going to college. Some of the reasons for going include; because it was the next logical step in their lives, a degree is necessity to have a secure middle-class lifestyle, to have the college “experience” for personal growth, to figure out who they were, their parents put pressure on them, and/or just going through the motions, and one actually wanted to go to learn more. College Degree

...receiving a college degree improve your career opportunities? In my own personal opinion, the answer to the above question is yes, you can improve many opportunities especially your career choice if you have a college degree. According to "The Benefits of a College Degree" (2014-2016), “While high school graduates can look forward to entry-level positions in non-skilled positions, graduates with a four-year bachelor’s degree will qualify for a much greater range of higher paying entry- and upper-level career positions”(). Studies show that not only do graduates enhance their job opportunities but also satiability for themselves, higher earnings and great benefits for their families. Using critical thinking to answer this question was very useful. I looked at both positions of the answer I gave, as in looking at it without a degree and with one. Critical thinking taught me to look at every option and not just one. When I looked for the answers online it also gave me many other outside perspectives on this topic. But thinking critically helped me to believe in my own answer and be confident with it. I believe I will continue to keep trying to use critical thinking as much as I can in my everyday life. This class taught me to not just pick an answer but to think before picking and see from others point of view. I will try to continue this great knowledge I was taught through my college courses, future career and life. References The Benefits of a College......

Online Learning

...Getting on the degree path that’s right for you is a big decision for many—and not something to take lightly. As employers demand more skills from employees, the demand of online degree programs has increased inpopularity. In fact, within the United States, 6.7 million students enrolled in at least one online course in fall 2011—an increase of more than 500,000 students compared to 2010. What is the big difference in online versus traditional education? “Each student learns differently and in today's era of increasing technology, the question will not be whether to offer classes online, but rather how to implement them,” says Allison Hiltz, a former online and traditional education student who writes for The Book Wheel Blog. There are several options when it comes to online or traditional education degrees. The platform offers everything from certificates and diplomas to more advanced degree options such as an associate or bachelor’s degree. With constant changes in technology from all different degree programs, let’s take a look at the advantages to an online versus traditional education and examine how each type of education impacts you as a student. The job market has become much more competitive in the last few years. As companies cut back on labor to stay in business, education has become extremely important for employees who want to be more competitive in their current positions or want to transition into a new career. The level of competition for good jobs has......

Differences Between Competencies of Associate’s Degree Nurses and Bachelor’s Degree Nurses

...Differences between Competencies of Associate’s Degree Nurses and Bachelor’s Degree Nurses Initially it was difficult to get over the inadequacies of an associate’s degree in nursing, more because of personal reasons, being one myself. Admitting that I’m not as educated as the next person is quite difficult for me; I take myself and my job very seriously, and I honestly think I’m one of the best nurses in the hospital where I work. Being the best nurse, however, is not the point of furthering my education, the patient is. If there is one thing that I learn from this Baccalaureate program that saves a patient’s life, then this will be well worth the time and money invested. When I started researching this topic, I was drawn to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing regarding their stance on a higher qualified nursing workforce. I found multiple studies showing that patient outcomes improved dramatically when the nurses had more education (Rosseter). After reading study upon study, my question became why. Why do Baccalaureate Nurses have so many great outcomes where Associate Nurses fail? We both have the same clinical skills. What could we possibly learn in twelve extra classes that increase our patient’s survival rate by 4% for every 10% increase in Baccalaureate Nurses (Aiken)? Of course the American Association of Colleges of Nursing would promote education; that is their job. However, there were too many studies done with peer review to just sweep this under...

Degree or Not

...Writing an Argument Latasha Randle MGT/521 February 6, 2012 Dr. Marie J. Abram Writing an Argument A Masters of Business Administration (MBA) is a post graduate degree which focuses on Business Communication. The program focuses on providing its attendees with business knowledge, leadership abilities, networking opportunities, and career advancement. Although the intent of the program is understood, one must weigh the advantages and disadvantages when determining if pursuing an MBA is the right choice. Oftentimes, obtaining a degree is only seen in a positive light. However, there can be some hidden negative impacts to seeking a MBA. There are several factors I personally had to consider when deciding to enroll in an MBA program. The MBA program is recognized as the most sought-after postgraduate degree program (VanderMey, 2011). According to the Graduate Management Admission Council, the average starting salary ranges from $61,000 to $78,000 annually for recent MBA graduates (VanderMey, 2011). The thought of obtaining a highly sought-after degree and the earning potential were my first true reasons for desiring to be in the MBA program. On the contrary, the job market is currently in a downward spiral. This means that with an MBA degree, there is a likelihood of remaining underemployed or unemployed. According to recent statistics, college graduates are facing the highest unemployment rates in more than two decades (VanderMey, 2011). Another objection to earning...
