...Integrating Culture and Diversity in Decision Making: The CEO and Organizational Culture Profile Bus 520: Leadership and Organizational Behavior April 29, 2013 Organizational culture is the essence of any company. It is the way a company separates themselves from the market and especially, from their competition. According to an article in Business Insider, “Corporate culture is the personality of a company and it can’t be faked” (Schawbel, 2013, Cultural research section, para. 1). For the purpose of this paper, I will be investigating the corporate culture of Google Incorporated. Google was founded in 1998 by Larry Page and Sergey Brin who met at Stanford University in 1995 (Google Company website). What is Google’s organizational culture? Google’s organizational culture is represented in several ways which include their management structure, and their public transparency, their treatment of employees, etc. Below is an excerpt from an article in Business Insider: Employees are offered free cafeteria food and there’s a flat management structure. They have also made their company’s core values public. The company founders still do busy work, including keeping the cereal fresh in the cafeteria. Google is constantly getting feedback from employees and even has their own tool called Google-O-Meter to gauge the popularity of employee suggestions. In addition, they have “culture clubs”, which are groups of employees who come......

...Integrating Culture and Diversity in Decision Making: The CEO and Organizational Culture Profile April Smith The organization I chose to research and discuss on is Zappos. Many individuals enjoy this organization because it is an online shoe store that sells name brand designers that is half the priced than an original shoe store within a mall. Nick Swinmurn, who started the online shoe retailer Zappos.com, founded this organization in 1999. His original idea was to generate a web site that presented great quality of selections of brands, styles, colors, sizes, and widths of the shoes. By 2010, Zappos had grown so much that there was need to restructure the company so that we could continue to offer customers the very best service possible. For us to have the flexibility to possibly sell anything and everything one day, we needed to make this change. On May 1, 2010, Zappos was restructured into ten separate companies under the Zappos Family umbrella "The Zappos Family Story." Zappos is just like any other organization that holds a culture of values of their organization. There unique culture provides ten family core values that their organization stand firm about business. Their first value is Deliver WOW Through Service, at Zappos anything worth doing is worth doing with WOW. They distinguish that value short and simply but it encompasses things with the organization. The philosophy at Zappos is to......

Organizational Best Practices for Managing Diversity

...Organizational Best Practices for Managing Diversity Richard L. Goode MGMT 5306-VC03, Leadership and Management Development Wayland Baptist University Winter, 2013 Abstract Diversity consists of different aspects such as race, ethnicity, age, gender, religious beliefs, social status, and sexual identification. Businesses are expanding in overseas markets which are bringing together different cultures. Additionally, diversity in the workforce is increasing with more women assuming roles that were previously male dominated. How an organization manages their respective diversity programs will have a direct impact on the success of the company. This paper will identify a few of the best practices some organizations have implemented to improve and solidify their diversity programs. The ways in which a leader of a company or organization manages diversity directly impacts the level of success the organization achieves. Leaders at all levels must foster an environment that brings together people of different ethnic backgrounds, religious beliefs, sexual orientation, and gender, and mold them into a cohesive and productive unit. A culture of tolerance for, and appreciation of diversity should be established by the senior executives of the organization. The executives must set an example with their behavior in order to make diversity a part of the organization’s culture. Merriam-Webster (n.d.) defines diversity as “the quality or state of having many different forms,......

Diversity

...Does workforce diversity always result in better organizational performance? In today’s global competitive environment, workforce diversity became a competitive edge that helps firms better understand different cultures and different ways of conducting business globally (“Benefits and problems”). Taylor Cox emphasized that increasing workforce diversity for better organizational performance is still an essential business issue that receives great attention, as “most of today's small business owners and corporate executives recognize that attention to the challenges and opportunities associated with the growing trend toward culturally diverse work forces can be a key factor in overall business success”. Rob McInnes identified 7 factors that motivate companies to diversify their workforces: As a Social Responsibility: companies exercise corporate social responsibility role by diversifying their workforces and supporting their good living. As an Economic Payback: “diversifying the workforce, particularly through initiatives like welfare-to-work, can effectively turn tax users into tax payers”. As a Resource Imperative: companies shouldn’t be hindered from attracting best talents available in the markets because of discriminatory practices. As a Legal Requirement: law requires companies not to be discriminatory in their employment practices or they will be exposed to penalties, as “fines and loss of contracts with government agencies”. As a Marketing Strategy:......

Diversity in Organizational Behavior

...Diversity In Organizations: Disability. Disability can be descibed as a person who has a physical or mental condition that limits their movements, senses, or activities. We use the terms 'mental' and 'physical' to describe disabilities. This definition is very broad though, and we will look at how organizations integrate people affected by disabilities in their organizations. In Ireland, The Disability Act 2005, aimed to persuade public and private compnaies to be proactive about employing people with disabilities within their organizations. In Taiwan, The People With Disabilities Rights Protection Act 2007, staetes that disabled people must comprise at least 1% of the work force at private organizations, and at least 3% of government offices over a certain size (67 employees), including public schools and state-owned enterprises. In The U.S., the Americans With Disabilities Act ADA, was introduced in 1990. The ADA immediately led to a surge in the amount of people classified as disabled joining the workforce. The ADA states that employers must mate 'reasonable accommodations' to their working environments for people with disabilities. It can be hard to measure the the relationship between disability and employment because the definiton of disabled is so broad. Just think of certain neurological disorders that are impossible to notice at a glance, like depression, addiction, or other personality disorders. The Equal Employment Commission in the US uses 'physical or......

Organizational Diversity

...A cross-level process theory of trust development in interorganizational relationships Abstract Most research on trust in inter-organizational relationships focuses on a single level of analysis, typically the individual or organizational level, and treats trust as a fairly static phenomenon. To stimulate more cross-level research, we propose a theoretical model that explains how trust in inter-organizational relationships is related across various levels of analysis. At the same time, our model emphasizes the dynamic aspect of trust by examining how trust develops throughout consecutive relationship stages. Drawing from several programs of research, we identify the mechanisms that drive the progression of trust across levels as the inter-organizational relationship unfolds. Starting with the boundary spanner as the key individual at the beginning of a new collaboration, we specify how trust gradually becomes part of the fabric of organizational action. By integrating micro and macro approaches over time, the proposed model contributes to a better understanding of how trust evolves in inter-organizational relationships. Keywords Alliance dynamics, cross-level effects, institutionalization, inter-organizational relationships, multilevel theory, strategic alliances, trust Introduction In the development of the management of inter-organisational relationships, the issue of trust has increasingly become the main focus (MacDuffie, 2011; Zaheer and Harris, 2006). ...

Managing Diversity with Organizational Behavior

...Managing Diversity with Organizational Behavior Managing Diversity with Organizational Behavior I believe the president of the United States Barack Obama and many of the 2010 Congressmen and Senators could have learned a lot from this Organizational Behavior class. I believe that their lack of managing diversity training is the root cause of some major turmoil both in and out of the military, and will continue to be for many years to come. In this analysis I would like to focus on some issues with the legislations repeal act of president Bill Clinton and his 1993 legislation’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy and discuss how the 2010 legislation could have managed diversity with less complications. The following analysis is not meant to voice the military nor my personal opinion of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy nor its repeal. This analysis will focus purely on how the 2010 legislation could have managed diversity with less complications (Kreitner & Kinicki, 2010, p. 35) in regards to: the repeal act of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy (Wikipedia, 2012), the Defense of Marriage Act (Beutler, 2011), and the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) Article 125: Sodomy (SLDN, 2012), and how these policies are currently not working well together (Beutler, 2011). Diversity represents the multitude of individual differences and similarities that exist among people. Diversity is not an issue of age, race, or gender. Diversity is not an issue of being heterosexual,......
