October 2, 2012 Phineas and Ferb Cartoon Analysis I have come to the conclusion that I will do my research on the show Phineas and Ferb. Within this show you will see the many adventures the two boys take and the crazy ideas they come up with. This show comes on Disney Channel. It shows roughly about 3 p.m. daily, but the time of the show varies. Some days it may be at three, whereas other days it may appear at four. This show is animated. The characters appear the same in every episode. As you read, you will see what this show provides for kids and parents.
In the show Phineas and Ferb, the main characters are: Phineas Flynn, Ferb Fletcher, Candace Flynn, Perry the Platypus, and Dr. Doofenshmirtz. Most of the main characters are males. The characters in the story are Caucasian, except for the some of the minor characters such as, Baljeet who is Indian, Isabella who is Jewish-Mexican, and Candace’s best friend Stacy who seems to appear like someone from the Japanese decent. This show provides many different aspects from the role of gender and race. You can definitely tell who the guys and girls are. As Judith Lorber said in The Social Construction of Gender, “Babies are dressed and adorned in a way that displays the category because parents don’t want to be constantly asked whether their baby is a girl or boy.” The boy characters wear orange and blue, whereas the girls wear pink or a lighter shade of pink. Every individual that watches the show can recognize how the characters are dressed and never wonder what gender the character is. Every characters hair color seems to vary. He was working on the railroad using a tamping iron to press an explosive powder into a rock. This was a normal practice for blasting away rock during the middle 1800’s. While Phineas was tamping the rod down into the rock, the iron hit part of the rock and sparked, thus igniting the powder inside the rock. This caused a blast that projected the iron rod into his left cheek and brain, then coming out the top of his skull. This did not kill him; it did not even seem to have affected his brain in a major way at first. Phineas developed an infection that had him in and out of consciousness for two months, was blind in his left eye and experienced weakness in the left side of his face. The initial thought that Gage was unaffected by this accident proved to be wrong. The physician, Dr. Harlow, that tended to Gage immediately after his incident hinted that while he did not seem to be affected intellectually, he had observed changes in his personality (Kihlstrom, 2010). ...Phineas Gage Paper At the age of 25 Phineas Gage was a bright, promising foreman working for the Rutland and Burlington railroad in Cavendish, Vermont. As was the practice of the times, tamping powder was used to blast drill holes for the preparation of laying track (Wickens, 2005). Gage was using a tamping rod to compact the powder in the holes before detonation when suddenly a precipitous explosion propelled the rod, which was 1.1 meters long, 6 millimeters thick, and weighing 6 kilograms, through his left cheek and brain, exiting out the vault of his skull (Leach & O'Driscoll, 1998). Surprisingly, Gage remained conscious on the ride to the doctor. Once there, Dr. Harlow, the attending physician, bandaged his wounds, which bled for an additional 2 days. Gage showed no obvious, immediate mental deficits, but an aggressive viral infection set in at the damaged area which led to a month of semiconscious recovery. The infection finally abated and Gage made a complete recovery, except for blindness in his left eye and weakness in the left side of his face. However, upon returning to work it became quite clear that Mr. Gage was not entirely himself. The damage to Gage’s brain was localized in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex; nevertheless, in order to understand the personality changes that Gage underwent after his recovery it is necessary to first examine the underlying neurological and cognitive interplay thereof. In this essay, the author will discuss the details of the accident and what it revealed about how the different areas of the human brain support cognitive function. I will also discuss the characteristics of primary memory, the process of memory from perception and retrieval and the unreliability of memory retrieval. Phineas Gage Phineas gage is known as one of the most famous documented cases of brain injury. This brain injury occurred on September 13th, 1848 while Gage was working on the railroad excavating rocks with a tampering rod in the State of Vermont. An explosion occurred on the job-site that caused a tampering rod propelled at an extremely high speed to enter and penetrate Gage’s skull. This tampering rod entered his skull under his left cheek bone and exited through the top of his head; it was later recovered with bits of brain matter and blood on it. The amazing thing is that throughout this horrific accident, Mr. Gage never lost consciousness, in fact, by January of the following year; he had started to live a normal life. Cognitive psychologists are interested in how memory functions, how people solve problems and make decisions, and similar questions. Cognitive function would include any and all characteristics of an individual ’s perception, such as, sensing, reasoning, conception, imagining and remembering (Willingham, 2007). Different areas of the brain serve different cognitive functions. The thalamus is a relay station for sensory and motor information. For all senses except smell, the receptors first send information to the thalamus, which passes it on to the cortex. The Amygdala is believed to be important in the processing of emotion and probably information about social functions. Hippocampus is important in memory. The cerebellum is important in motor control (Willingham, 2007). Phineas poured blasting powder into the borehole of the train track but neglected to add sand, when he tamped it down with his ‘crowbar’ the bar shot out going through his left cheek, destroying his left eye and rocketing out of his skull and landing 80 feet away (Guidotti, T., 2012). Many types of cartoons are available like animated people, animated animals, and cartoons just for children and even cartoons for adults, which are mostly referred to as anime. Adult cartoons are usually extremely violent or contain high sexual content. Many issues involving violence in cartoons are unnoticeable such as desensitizing children, increasing their aggressiveness, and decreasing their fear of becoming victims in real life. All children are influenced by what they see in their daily television shows and when these happen to be violent cartoons they become negatively affected. Cartoons are presented to children with colorful and goofy characters but many of these shows have a lot of violence portrayed in them. The brain is the place where emotions, perception, planning, memory, action, thinking, learning and language, among other things, all take place. He vividly depicts the western Coalition troops' situation in Iraq by placing the soldier inside a treacherous and hideous wolf's mouth. The soldier represents the western Coalition troops while the wolf represents Iraq. He is trapped inside the wolf's mouth and surrounded by its sharp teeth. His eyes are wide open and focused outside the wolf’s mouth as if requesting for external help from that situation. He has a helmet on his head to emphasize how hostile his environment is with situations such as bomb attacks being one of them. In the cartoon, we see the soldier within inches of the wolf's tongue, and if he advances further he may be rolled up by and engulfed by it. Consequently, he cannot withdraw himself due to the surrounding sharp teeth which can tear him into pieces. The wolf looks barbaric and ferocious, an image which is an analogous description of some nomad countries which apprehend international peaceful treaties. The cartoonist further scribbles “Iraq" on the head of the wolf to drive the point home about who he is referring to. ...Cartoon Analysis Calvin and Hobbes is a syndicated daily comic strip that was written and illustrated by American cartoonist Bill Watterson, and syndicated from November 18, 1985, to December 31, 1995. This cartoon is one of my favorites because I always fell that it treat with the general problems in life by using comedy. Thesis: There are clear words used by both characters and I choose this cartoon because the problem this cartoon deals with apply to many students who don’t start doing homework until the last minute. This comic uses the body (kinesics), and simple words (paralanguage) to explain problem that must people, especially students understand by using the participation process as described in Comm2 page 4. The artist show that most people have the problem that they won’t work on their tasks until they feel the panic of the last moment. This is illustrated by the body position of the little boy, Calvin. He show his frustration when his hands are outstretched and his mouth is open in the second slide of the cartoon. His procrastination is shown when he continues to play in the sandbox instead of taking action. The cartoon uses a little boy to relay a message that older people will understand. It is kind of ironic because Calvin is clearly a little boy, but doesn’t speak like a little boy. “You can’t just turn creativity off like a faucet” isn’t the kind of speech that comes out of my 6 year old niece when she is sitting and playing in a sandbox.
