Social psychology is reinforced with scientific methods and research that helps to differ from other divisions of psychology and keeps its own focus on structure, terminology, methods, and goals. Social psychology is about understanding individual behavior in a social environment and how it affects one another. It deals with how and why individuals feel, think, and do the things they do depending upon the social context (Myers, 2010). Social psychologist study, love and hate, conformity and independence, attitudes and beliefs. Understanding social psychology is very important because it gives a clear perception of how stereotyping takes formation in certain situations such as why racism and sexism subsist, how individuals fall in love, and how an individual can change into an entirely different person in a particular situation (Myers, 2010) . Social psychology is different in comparison to other disciplines such as clinical psychology, general psychology, and sociology because it focuses on an individual’s thoughts, feelings, and behavior affected by the existence of others. Running on Empty: The Effects of Food Deprivation on Concentration and Perseverance Thomas Delancy and Adam Solberg Dordt College 34 Sample Abstract Running on Empty Abstract This study examined the effects of short-term food deprivation on two The abstract summarizes the problem, participants, hypotheses, methods used, results, and conclusions. 2 cognitive abilities—concentration and perseverance. Undergraduate students (N-51) were tested on both a concentration task and a perseverance task after one of three levels of food deprivation: none, 12 hours, or 24 hours. We predicted that food deprivation would impair both concentration scores and perseverance time. Food deprivation had no significant effect on concentration scores, which is consistent with recent research on the effects of food deprivation (Green et al., 1995; Green et al., 1997). However, participants in the 12-hour deprivation group spent significantly less time on the perseverance task than those in both the control and 24-hour deprivation groups, suggesting that short-term deprivation may affect some aspects of cognition and not others. ...APA Format Template: Title of Paper Goes Here Not Bold 12 pt. Font Your Name University of North Carolina School of Social Work Title of Paper Repeated Exactly As It Appears On Title Page This template was developed by Paul Rose of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. To make the template more practical for typical class papers, we have made minor alterations to Dr. Rose’s template (e.g., omitting Author Note, Abstract sections). If submitting a paper for publication, use Dr. Rose’s full template, which is available for free download at www.siue.edu/~prose/classes/APAFormatTemplate.doc To use this template, begin the body of your paper (your introduction) as the first paragraph beneath the title. Note that APA does not use the Introduction header: just plunge in. Add your text and delete the placeholder text used in the template. The rest of the text in this template provides hints about properly generating all the parts of your APA-formatted paper. APA style specifies that major components of the paper (abstract, body, references, etc.) each begin on a new page with the heading centered at the top of the page. The body of the text is typically divided into sections with headings such as Method, Results, and Discussion. For an example of a paper properly formatted per the APA Manual, Sixth Edition, go to http://www.apastyle.org/manual/related/sample-experiment-paper-1.pdf Some papers have multiple studies in them so the body......

...Center Using APA: Creating a Reference Page (Updated October 2012—APA 6th Edition) General Guidelines for Formatting a Reference Page Your reference list provides the information necessary for a reader to locate and retrieve any source you cite in the essay. Each source you cite in the essay must appear in your reference list (except for personal communications); each entry in the reference list must be cited in your text.  Start the reference list on a new page. Type the word References in upper and lowercase letters, centered, at the top of the page on the first line below the page header; do not underline, and do not put it in quotation marks. Your reference list must be in alphabetical order according to author’s last name; if no author is given for a particular source, alphabetize by the title of the piece and use a shortened version of the title for parenthetical citations. If you have more than one work by a particular author, order them by publication date, oldest to newest. Provide first initial (and not first name) and middle initial (if provided) for all authors of a particular work. Capitalize only the first word of a title or subtitle of a work unless it is a proper noun. Italicize titles of books and journals—note that the italics extend to include the volume number of a periodical as well as the period at the end of a book title. Use “&” instead of “and” when listing multiple authors of a single work. The first line of each entry in your Reference list......

...Social Psychology Dawn S. Peck PSY 400 12/22/2014 David Brueshoff Social Psychology What is Social Psychology all about? Why is the study of it so important? Is there truly a purpose and benefit from the findings of the studies? Let’s look at each of these questions, break them down, and try to make sense of it all. Simply defined, Social Psychology is the scientific study of individual attitude and how it effects or influences others in a social context. It is helpful to understand the why, what, or could be, behind a behavior or reaction. Those that research this field, can provide credible insight to assist with understanding and ultimately contribute to the success of peace-keeping within society. There are many meanings behind Social Psychology, and it should be noted this branch of psychology is unique from other disciplines in the same field. Social Psychology Basics To be considered a “scientific study” there must be a theory, followed by a hypothesis and tested to support or reject the original theory. Methods of research include public surveys where both targeted and random speculation occurs. Work can be done in a laboratory with a controlled subject or in the field where everyday life happens. Social Psychology researchers pay particular attention not only to the cause and effect of behavior but they look deeper into the relationship we have with ourselves in effort to explain the overall difference of opinion and responses......

...Psychological Association [APA] Style Guide for Writing Introduction Students of Grand Canyon University (GCU) are required to use the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th ed.) for preparing written assignments, except where otherwise noted. All students should have a personal copy of the APA Publication Manual, which is available through the GCU Bookstore or local bookstores. In the interest of providing resource material for student use, this guide to APA style and format has been developed and made available. It is based on the current 6th edition of the APA Manual. However, the guide only highlights aspects of APA style and format, and so it is recommended that students use the APA Manual as a resource when writing APA-style papers. An APA template has been provided in the Student Success Center’s Writing Center for student download and use. PLEASE NOTE: The curriculum materials (Syllabus, Lectures/Readings, Resources, etc.) created and provided by GCU in the online or Web-enhanced modalities are prepared using an editorial format that relies on APA as a framework but that modifies some formatting criteria to better suit the nature and purpose of instructional materials. Students and faculty are advised that GCU course materials do not adhere strictly to APA format and should not be used as examples of correct APA format, or in place of the APA Manual, when preparing written work for class.
