IQ And Mathematical Learning
In the article Motivation, Not IQ, Matters Most for Learning New Math Skills, psychologists study math abilities and habits of thirty-five hundred German students from the fifth to tenth grade. Students’ mathematical abilities were evaluated each year using standardized testing. In addition to this students were given an IQ test and surveys that questioned about their attitudes toward math. As the title of this report suggests they found that IQ was not the main determining factor in how well the student’s math abilities grew. Instead IQ was found to be a predictor of initial math skill and studying and motivation where found to be predictors of growth in mathematical abilities. These findings came as a surprise to the researchers who predicted that intelligence measured by IQ would be a strong predictor of mathematical abilities. This article encompasses the main findings of the researchers into a summarization of their findings. This research in this study is credible and believable but the article leaves out some essential information about the findings that could strengthen or weaken the researcher’s argument and allow the reader to develop their own opinion.
In this study the independent variable is the student’s IQ and the dependent variable is the student’s mathematical scores/abilities. IQ tests have long been used as a system to measure the intelligence of the testee. Standardized mathematical testing is an accurate method of measuring mathematical abilities because it objectively scores each student’s mathematical knowledge in the same way. Due to the standardized nature of the IQ and math tests the student’s scores can be used to compare each other with without causing error. In order to solidify these findings and rule out possible sources of error researchers interviewed students to determine their attitudes…...

Currently one form of device that has been created specifically as a signal source for the satellite is the electronic tag already a scheme using such tags on individuals is in operation in the UK. The justification used is that it is necessary to cope the growth in the population of the already over flowing prisons. The tag fits ocular around the offenders wrists and can monitored to see if the offenders are violating curfew regulations. Pilot tagging schemes are already in operation in greater Manchester, Bark Shaw and Norfolk with plans for expansion in other countries in the coming year. In an article of the Daily Telegraph stated the 13th of November 1997 Jack Straw the current British home secretary stated that electronic tagging has developed rapidly in the past few years as has peoples confidence in it. There is no argument that it has within it the scope for further significant development and with the people firmly under their watchful eye the Masons can now further advance their plans for global control manipulating them in accordance with their own ends and this manipulation would be achieved by any means necessary.  The Free Masons plan for complete global control by one governmental body means t plan for complete global control by one governmental body means they must pave the way for complete global economic union,......

...hardest. “Many students believe that it is a rite of passage to stay up all night during college and it’s kind of fun” (Yahalom, 2007). “But if you use all-nighters, your GPA is slightly lower than average. Pulling all-nighters compromises your overall sleep and makes it difficult to reach your fullest academic potential” (Yahalom, 2007). Sleep is such an important part of a person’s life because if you are not getting the adequate amount of sleep each night, you are hurting yourself because sleep affects your body and it also causes your brain to function slower since you aren’t getting the proper amount of sleep causing it to hurt academic performance as well as many other things. Sleep can affect your academic performance in many ways. “Research shows than students who receive seven hours of sleep each night do better on memory than those who do not. Individuals will vary in terms of how much sleep is the right amount, but most college students need at least six to eight hours of sleep each night” (Utah State University, 2011). Sleep has an effect on your memory because when you aren’t getting at least seven hours of sleep a night, your memory is affected the next day because your brain didn’t have the needed rest it needed to function properly which causes your memory to run slower because the brain muscles are working the way they should because of the lack of sleep. Another effect that sleep has on your academic performance is recovery time. “It is important to avoid......

...Psych 100 Term Paper Psychological factors can be related to many different problems, one problem that had personally affected me was the grades I got my freshman year of college. I started my college career struggling a little bit and often wondered how I could raise my grades and improve my GPA until I was satisfied with the grades I would get. Coming to college I was finally on my own with no one to wake me up, make me do homework, or go to class. These all led to my GPA not being exactly where I wanted it to be along with a number of psychological factors that have all been introduced throughout lecture and the readings. The four different chapters I can relate this problem most too would have to be those on stress, personality, motivation and social psychology. Stress is one of the main leaders for college students and low GPA’s and I believe it had a lot to do with my original GPA from my freshman year. Living here on campus is extremely overwhelming at first for a freshman here at UMass Amherst. There are so many events that you can attend, RSOs that you can join, and other things in town and campus. It is also the first time moving away from home and that can lead to stress because no one is around to remind you about things that you may forget to do. The classes here at UMass were also extremely different from any classes I took at my high school. I was used to smaller classes of about 20-25 students that were all mostly my friends, now I was being thrown into......

...Chris Copenhaver BSA-310 Jack Davis Research Article Assignment Week 5 For this last week the article that I chose is called “Interesting Analytics & Big Data Trends for 2015. This article speaks about the popular trends coming along in 2015. In 2015 more seems to be the word of the year. As a country we are on the cusp of so many wonderful advances in the technology field. You can collaborate with people across the globe, and complete a common goal together while you’re apart. The internet has strung us all together and we are seeing such evidence of that with the cloud. One of our subtopics of our power point presentation for our learn team was, “Collaborative Software”. One of the little software we digested was Microsoft Office 365. Each year more and more users say yes to the cloud, and the Terabytes just keep adding up. For services as such 2015 will require more. A larger investment, more advertising, more competitiveness, and even more storage needed. This trend towards the direction of the cloud is starting to come to a head and is really close to becoming the way of the present. When you look around the cloud has touched you in some sort of way, whether is storing your contacts on their website or backing up your important photos from your trip to Europe, you are involved in some way. Companies such as ESPN and Disney have migrated their infrastructures to Office 365, this shows that business innovators are biting on this trend. It’s almost past the point......

...explained by using Tversky and Kahnman’s (1979) prospect theory. This theory is based on the idea that people value gains and losses differently, and, as such, will base their decisions on perceived gains rather than perceived avoided losses. Thus, if a person were given two equal choices, one expressed in terms of possible gains and the other in possible avoided losses, people would choose the former; even if both achieve the same end results. Tverky and Kahneman argue that the displeasure associated with the loss is perceived to be greater than the pleasure associated with the same amount of gain. Therefore, people respond differently, depending on whether the choices are framed in terms of gains or in terms of losses. A growing body of research in decision making is strongly influenced by the prospect theory and the Asian disease problem introduced by Tversky and Kahneman (1979). The study by Okder (2012), for example, examines whether the risky framing effect is due to the difference in schema of the lives saved and lost. Okder (2012) argues that the “illusion of framing in risky decisions” is caused by expected losses with the “shift of independent or complementary schemata” (i.e. the risk reversal). Based on three studies, Okder (2012) suggests that the reversal of risk preferences in the gain and loss frames can be confirmed when the number of expected losses was known and when it was unknown. When the experimenters (in study 2) provided the participants with full......

...Research Article: Standard Tracheal Secretion Assessment versus an acoustic Secretion Detector Endotracheal intubation and mechanical ventilation are life-saving procedures in patients with respiratory insufficiency. But this can profoundly impair the defensive mechanisms which keep the lower respiratory tract sterile, increasing the risk of bacterial colonization and ventilator-associated pneumonia. Although endotracheal suctioning is a standard of care in all mechanically ventilated patients, clear guidelines regarding the technique and timing of suctioning are lacking. The applicable American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) guideline suggests that endotracheal suctioning should be performed at some minimum frequency or when clinically indicated. Since endotracheal suctioning can cause hypoxemia, mechanical trauma, bronchospasm, and hemodynamic instability, an accurate assessment of the need for suctioning might decrease the frequency of suctioning complications. TBA Care is a novel device designed to generate a signal when secretions are present in the respiratory tract of an intubated patient, indicating the need for endotracheal suctioning. This is the first prospective randomized trial to compare different indications for endotracheal suctioning. This study compares the efficacy of TBA Care in detecting the presence of secretions in the airways to standard indications, and tested the hypothesis that different suctioning indications could impact the incidence......

...all sleep. College students are infamous for pulling all-nighters. Whether it is to study or to finish an assignment. Studies have shown that “college life, particularly for first year students…affect rest and much needed restorative sleep, which may in turn compromise students’ health and academic performance” (Sadigh, Himmanen, Scepansky, 2014). The late-night study habits affect students’ psych as well as their well-being. Conclusion Anxiety is caused by a whole slew of stressors such as, adulthood, financial problems, academic performance, and lack of sleep. While those are all major causes of anxiety in college students, they are not the only ones. The only way for someone to deal with anxiety is to overcome it; day-by-day. While it may be a constant struggle with new trials everyday, one must remember that it will always get better. What may once have been the source of one’s angst will someday be something to laugh about. References Beiter, R., Nash, R., McCrady, M., Rhoades, D., Linscomb, M., Clarahan, M., & Sammut, S. (2015).
