This is a great case dealing with the “big picture/helicopter vision”. It is an ideal case to get us started. Below are the main learning points. There may also be other things you learnt from the class, that are not listed here. Think about how you can take some of these learning points back to your own companies and context, and apply them.

The case teaches us:

- about moving from a production/selling orientation to a market orientation. This is really really important. The whole case is about this. Market orientation is not just some price change or a new ad campaign. It involves the whole organizational culture, organizational structure, and the whole marketing mix. Get it right inside (i.e. develop a market oriented company culture), and then go outside. - about the role and responsibilities of a chief marketing officer (Mr Kim) in a large MNC. - about bottom up and top down structures i.e. think global, act local. The GMO had a global strategy team (top down. Looking at global strategy, global branding, global budgets) and a regional strategy team, and the regional strategy team interacted with regional managers and country managers. - the importance of internal marketing, and selling to staff the importance of being market oriented. - about being a market leader rather than a market follower i.e. moving from a commodity product to a premium branded product. The Samsung Group (Samsung) is a South Korean international conglomerate that makes all types of electronic products under the Samsung brand. Samsung is said to make exports that consist of fifth of all exports made by Korean companies, and its revenues alone would make Samsung the world’s 35th largest economy. Americans know Samsung for producing products like television, washer and dryer, smart phone, camcorder, printer, and DVD among many Samsung products. Samsung like other major companies has what is called Green Initiatives. Samsung aims to become one of the most eco-friendly companies in the world by year 2013. Nokia picks up tab (Source Tweet) This is a clear public relations(PR) disaster and I aim to suggest options which can help one handle this better, and possibly prevent it in the future. Samsung tried to force two Indian bloggers attending the IFA trade show in Berlin, to operate as Samsung representatives against their will. Essentially telling them, “Promote our products at IFA or walk home”. Yep you read that right, a blogger was told by a PR representative from Samsung India allegedly over the phone that “you can either be a part of this and wear the uniform, or you’ll have to get your own tickets back home and handle your hotel stay from the moment this call ends.” Note: Every story has multiple sides, I’m sure Samsung has its own story as does the blogger, however, I hope to highlight things which one can learn. This is a PR Disaster I think the correct place to begin is in understanding and acknowledging that this is a public relations disaster.
