Risk-takers are smarter according to new study
In a recent study using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), images taken of the brains of young men revealed major differences in what is called
“white matter” between two separate groups of participants. The University of Turku in
Finland under the direction of SINTEF claims young men that make quick decisions in risky situations have a highly developed neural network and are “smarter” than low risktakers.
First each participant was given a personality test to assess the risk-taking propensity and susceptibility to peer influence. By doing this the researcher was able to separate the 17 right-handed, 18-19 year old males into two groups, high and low risk takers. The two groups reported to the Department of Radiology of the Turku University
Hospital for two practice sessions. During the sessions they were shows a driving game with sets of 20 stop-light intersections. They learned how to play the game and then reported back for four testing sessions in an MRI scanner. The first two sessions were performed under a non-competition social setting and the last two sessions by surprise were under social pressure of a peer competition situation.
Measurements were taken of the participants at each moment that decisionmaking took place wether to stop at the yellow light or try and make it through. Results showed that high risk-takers didn't hesitate for long before they made the decision. Low risk-takers found themselves hesitating and thinking about possible outcomes and the consequences of those decisions. Finding pertinent journal articles often seems to involve a maze of abstracting journals, indifferent librarians, missing volumes, CD-ROMs from the netherworld, and bound periodicals that refuse to flatten themselves for photocopiers (no matter how hard you press on them CPR-style). Even after an article has been located or provided, there is the problem of reading it. The worst way to assimilate a research paper is to read it word for word, title to literature cited, as if it were a textbook. This approach is a waste of time not only because perhaps as few as 1 in 4 articles that find their way into your hands should be committed to your brain, but also because it is deadly boring. Before reading one word of an article, ask yourself what you are looking for in the article. Knowing what you do about the subject, what gaps need to be filled? What knowledge needs to be expanded? What controversial points need to be corroborated? Generate expectations of a journal article before you read it. ...The concept of scientific management was introduced in the USA, in the late nineteenth century by Frederick Winslow Taylor (1912/1970a, cited in Locke, 1982). After laws had been passed to protect the rights of the employees, such as limiting the length of working day and prohibition of use of child labour, the employers started to think, how productivity of the workers could be increased (Fincham & Rhodes, 2005). Taylor made numerous suggestions, and in his time, they were useful and successful, since the productivity of work had improved. Scientific management was accepted and applied in many organisations of Taylor’s time in the USA (Witzel, 2005). However, what was applicable a hundred years ago can be irrelevant nowadays, in the twenty-first century. Jason Robert Luedeman UMUC 13 June 2016 X Rays and the History of Radiography X-rays were discovered in 1895 by Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen (1845-1923) who was a Professor at Wuerzburg University in Germany. Working with a cathode-ray tube in his laboratory, Roentgen observed a fluorescent glow of crystals on a table near his tube. The tube that Roentgen was working with consisted of a glass envelope (bulb) with positive and negative electrodes encapsulated in it. The air in the tube was evacuated, and when a high voltage was applied, the tube produced a fluorescent glow. Roentgen shielded the tube with heavy black paper, and discovered a green colored fluorescent light generated by a material located a few feet away from the tube. He concluded that a new type of ray was being emitted from the tube. This ray was capable of passing through the heavy paper covering and exciting the phosphorescent materials in the room. He found that the new ray could pass through most substances casting shadows of solid objects. Roentgen also discovered that the ray could pass through the tissue of humans, but not bones and metal objects. One of Roentgen's first experiments late in 1895 was a film of the hand of his wife, Bertha.
