Participation in Team Sports and Alcohol and Marijuana Use Initiation Trajectories

In the article, “Participation in Team Sports and Alcohol and Marijuana Use Initiation Trajectories” written by Nadra Erin Lisha , William Crano, and Kevin Delucchid the use of recreational drugs and alcohol use among athletes are addressed. A study was surveyed among 8,179 youth from the National Survey of Parents and Youth. The study claimed that, “being part of a competitive sports team was related to a lower probability of marijuana initiation, but to increased rates of alcohol use over time. Males had significantly higher levels of marijuana initiation and decreases in rates of alcohol use over time; females had significantly greater rate of increase in alcohol use over time.” This sample is very useful to notify the reader that the use of alcohol and drugs is commonly used with adolescences in today’s sports world. By knowing this data it makes the readers question, why is todays athletes still so great at what they do and arguably the top athletes in history are performing today, and are constantly breaking records and entertaining the sports world? While alcohol and drugs should normally slow down athletes and keep them from performing at their best. For instance Usain Bolt the fastest person in the world from the Jamaican track team admits to using marijuana on a daily basis due to his cultural back ground and still yet, he performs better than athletes who don’t use marijuana.
This article is very informing and as a college athlete I can relate to this and understand where the authors are coming from. Throughout my time of playing competitive sports I have seen the good, the bad and the ugly of players and teammates of mine. In high school I have seen firsthand alcohol and drugs ruin teammates of mines lives…...

...Family ch Soc101 Instructor Miriane Portes January 22, 2014 The Social Institution of the Family Society is that complex social group of human beings that share an identity inhabiting active relationships and a unique culture. Those members of a society classify themselves through that society and work together with other members to ensure that the rules, generally agreed upon by all members to preside over how they relate to each other, are in place. Sociological perspectives are viewpoints from which we study and understand society. There are varied sociological perspectives available to social scientists for the purpose of study. What sociological perspective is used depends on the theories and purposes one needs for their study. I am going to show how functionalism, Conflict theory, and Social Interactionism can be used to study the social unit of the family Functionalism looks at the family as if it was one automatic unit with every member of the family having a role and a function affecting the whole. Take for example; the father who is traditionally head of the household who’s primary function is to provide for economical and financial needs for his wife and children. The wife who is supporter of the husband and nurture to the children, the children are dependent on their parents but also have an important role as well. These roles vary according to the age of the children and their stage in life. In the...

With many theories and perspectives, how do we say which one is better than the other? The variety of theories of how education is influenced, and how we view the learning and teaching process is what gives us the purpose and expectation of how schooling and education should be. While we compare and contrast the functionalist perspective, conflict theory perspective, and the interactionist perspectives on the desires and potential of education we will find that they are different in several ways. ...SOC 414: Written Assignment 5 The question of whether or not man is predetermined at birth to lead a life of crime is a question that has been debated for decades. Are serial killers born with the lust for murder, or are their desires developed through years of abuse and torment? Many believe it is impossible for an innocent child to be born with the capability to commit a horrible act such as murder. But at the same time, how could we have corrupted society so much as to turn an innocent child into a homicidal maniac? Forensic psychologists have picked apart the minds of serial killers to find an answer as to what forces them to commit such perverse acts. Their ultimate goal is to learn how to catch a serial killer before he commits his first crime. In many cases, serial killers began their lives as remotely normal human beings. Most, however, have detectable characteristics of murderers before they hit puberty. Otis O’toole, for example, started a neighborhood fire when he was six. George Adorno was even younger when he first displayed his pyromaniac tendencies by setting fire to his own sister when he was four. Along with pyromaniac behavior, other often-cited warning signs are enuresis (bed-wetting) and cruelty toward animals. Often, serial murderers are abused physically, psychologically, and sexually as children, sometimes from a stranger, but in most cases from a trusted family member or friend. Serial killers tend to be white heterosexual males in their twenties......
