Provide an argument that supports your decision. Support your decision with evidence and logic, not your personal opinion. An important part of your grade on this assignment is demonstrating your ability to think critically: to suspend judgment while gathering evidence and consulting the various stakeholders’ positions, to analyze each position, to consider the effects of different courses of action, and then to make a decision and support it with evidence and logic.

The company has been looking into the issues regarding Sonox and has agreed to continue collecting data and investigate this issue further. We would like to get to the bottom of this just as much as everyone else involved and we will investigate until there is concrete evidence that either proves that we are not responsible for the illnesses that are arising or until there is concrete proof that the company is responsible for the illnesses.
The board of directors has met with each group of stakeholders that is involved and has concerns involving the Sonox situation. The stakeholders presented valid concerns and I have reviewed these concerns and suggestions. The groups that met with the Board are the City of Riverdale and Its Citizens, the Employees of Kardell, the Investors of Kardell, and the Kardell Legal Council. These groups all had some similar concerns that included the future of the company and the health risks involved with the exposure of Sonox in the river. It seems that the group with the highest level of importance would be the investors since they have not only their money and health at stake but also the well being of the community. These groups also wanted the company to keep them informed and up to date with any decisions that will be made and we have agreed to do that so that we can all work together to overcome these circumstances. “The board members felt a responsibility…...

...Presentation of the CEO's Position For the last month plus myself and the board members have been going over the issue that environmental damage and especially when it affects everyone’s health as well as the Riverside community, which is the location of our primary plant of operations, and all of these things, have been happened. In the early stage of our investigation, it came to our attention that the health issues were due to the contamination a chemical called Sonox. We use Sonox to manufacture our bleached paper. This issue has caused some very real concerns to the people in the community and this can quit possible have a negative outcome for the mill which directly affects everyone. I as CEO have decided to further investigate into this matter and plan on coming up with a conclusion is in the best interest of everyone involved. The matters that are being addressed are mentioned is in the information below: This report is structured as follows: * The stakeholders involved * The relative importance of stakeholders * The mode of the gathering of data * The decision itself * The factors behind the decision * The justification of the decision * The stakeholders involved According to the modern stakeholder theory, everyone is entitled to be a stakeholder in the company, but it was hard to do that as part of the theory and was basically not part of this investigation. That being said the following people were acknowledged to being part of......

...matter of the environmental concerns that is related to the so called sonox found in the water stream in near Riverside. First to start with I think that it is very important to note that Kardell Paper Company has had roots in this community since 1985. Many of Kardell’s employees are fellow residents as well as employees, and they have extreme concerned about the recent medical problems that has been growing in our community. These medical problems have been said to consist of miscarriages and respiratory issues. With that said these cause of these problems has not yet been determined. Legally speaking, Kardell Paper Company has always compliance with the provincial emission standards, and will continue to be in compliances. No agency has been able to conclude that Kardell Paper Company has or has not contributed to any sonox emissions into the water. Let us also be reminded of the fact that similar courses of action have been launched against other facilities, but all of the claims have been dismissed due to lack of conclusive evidence that the mills’ operations were the cause of any significant hazard in the area. We are concerned for the health and welfare of the residents of Riverside, and the Kardell Paper Company will do everything within their power to continue to comply with the current regulations of the industry. If it is determined that Kardell’s paper mill is solely responsible for the sonox issue, they should then take measure to eliminate, or at least......

...understand the concern you have of the sonox being possibly leaked into the water supply, but there is no evidence that this is coming from just us, as we are in proper government regulation guidelines for emissions. There are other factory’s around the area that produce this chemical as well so further research needs to be done in order to provide a link between the two. If the link does connect the company to the sonox issue then proper action will be done. I know that the shutdown of the company would definitely hurt you, the employees, financially so I appreciate your support in keeping the factory open until a link has been found. As for the investors, I know you are concerned about the pollution as well but I assure you that all proper regulations are in place and there is no definite link between the sonox and the factory. You have a lot of money put into this business since it is a good company and has been around for quite some time. If a shutdown were to take place, there could be quite a bit of money lost and this could affect your investments. There is research being done to pin point the actually source of the sonox and if it is proven to be us, we will give proper notifications to you and hope that you will still invest within the company once it is re-opened. As for the citizens, I understand that you are scared and upset about the health issues within your community and there being a possible link between us and the sonox poisoning but there is no evidence......

The proposed plan would involve shutting the plant down for approximately a year and then only partially running for the next year in order to make the necessary upgrades to keep the contamination from happening.  The first group’s concerns I will examine will be the investors.  Their primary concern is the rate of return they get on their investment.  They have come up with an alternative plan to keep from shutting down the plant for the two years.  Their argument is that there is no evidence that the Sonox chemical have a negative impact on the environment or the health of the people in the community and because of these facts, the plant should not close for any period of time and loose profits.  The next group is the citizens of Riverside.  The citizen’s primary concern is the health of the people in their community and the affects of the environment of the contamination of the Sonox chemical that might be going into their water supply.  They understand that if the plant must be closed for a period it would hurt their economy in the community but they are only......

...of the industrial chemical Sonox near the plant’s discharge pipe and small trace amounts of the chemical farther away and on the opposite side of the shore from the plant. In recent years Kardell has begun using this chemical in the manufacturing of a line of bleached Kraft paper (Brooks, 2007). Along with Mr. Green’s report and impact statement from parties concerned; Kardell Employees Union Representives, Kardell Investors, City of Riverside and its citizens, and Kardell’s Legal Counsel. I will be analizing each groups concerns and present my final decision. The impact statement from the Kardell Employee Union Representatives bring the following concerns; the plant’s part in the discharge of the chemical Sonox into the river water, is Kardell complying with all government environmental regulations, worries with regards to the rising health conditions in the community with possible connections to Sonox, feel further testing on the effects of Sonox, possible alternatives to the retro fit proposal to prevent layoffs that would have a devastating impact on the communities economy. Our employees are the biggest asset Kardell has and they are a top priority, without them Kardell would not be what it is today. I want to assure them that Kardell is doing everything it is required by the Ministry of Environment in regards to the plant’s water waste. We are in constant communication and following the Ministry of Environment’s research and sources of Sonox (Brooks, 2007). By......

...citizens The citizens care about sonox because of the recent health issues going on in the community. They have a right to know if Kardell Paper Mill has a hand in the increased health cases and if so what do they plan to do to rectify the situation. They have the power to influence Kardell to do something about this issue because of the threat of a lawsuit and speaking out against the recent increase in health problems. The company should reach out immediately to the citizens of Riverside to show they care and are concerned about fixing the sonox issue to help reduce the health risks. Not reaching out to the community could should a lack of compassion and anger the citizens and spark community outrage. Another factor is that some of the community members are also employees which makes increases the urgency to address it. Kardell legal counsel Legal counsel is concerned with this issue because of the legal repercussions that can come from violating government policies and regulations. Counsel also considers the public health concerns, and money associated with the proposed environmental plan and what that means for company income and the employees that are affected. They have clients to protect from the stakeholders down to and including the employees that work and/or live in the community where this sonox issue is happening. Legal counsel has a huge influence because they have a hand in controlling how the company legally handles the sonox situation. Morally they......

...their livelihood) and also women directors to insure that all aspects of an issue will be understood and argued effectively. Question 5 Jack might blow the whistle if he thinks that the wrong decision is made or if the process is suppressed or if too much delay is involved. This would (did) involve regulatory sanction including fines, shut down, loss of market, loss of profit, and ultimately loss of control to creditors. If Jack doesn't blow the whistle, costs of ultimate clean-up and new process installation could rise. If the decision by the board is just to wait and see what happens, they will not be able to argue that they took "due diligence" measures to keep abreast of the health risk unless they initiate some research into the sonox problem, even if it is a periodic literature search or a retainer arrangement with a researcher to keep them advised. Similarly, they should continue to take readings in the river to monitor their discharge and try to identify other polluters...
