Spiritual Formation Ministry Plan

God expects individuals that call themselves “Christian” to grow spiritually. The Word of God encourages personal examination as a part of the growth process, as found in Psalm 139:23-24: “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my concerns. See if there is any offensive way in me; lead me in the everlasting way.” Becoming more Christ-like focuses on how He works in us and not on our work for Him. The Cycle of Works demonstrates that regardless of work we complete, the acceptance of others, the sustainability of our works and the significance it brings, we cannot compete with God’s Cycle of Grace that show us that we are significant in His sight and that brings us sustenance and acceptance as His child and that it is only by His work of dying on the cross that we can be forgiven.
There are obstacles to developing any kind of plan for the church. People complain of not having enough time to study because of work, family, and other obligations. It is a matter of establishing personal priorities and because they see no tangible earthly benefits to spiritual practices, no effort is made in developing a personal plan for spiritual growth. According to Simon Chan in Spiritual Theology, we are a society of partially committed Christians (p. 105), demonstrated by his model of the world, the visible church, and the remnant. Chan contends that those in the remnant are disciplined and committed to corporate rule and prayer. Using that thought as a basis, it is necessary to constantly encourage those in the visible church – individuals that attend worship services but have little to no spiritual life outside of the church walls – to set up their prayer life. Being wholly dependent on the Holy Spirit to plant the desire to grow in the hearts of church, leaders then need to model and talk about what practices they have in…...

A Spiritual Approach to Counseling: Is It Significant?

...A Spiritual Approach to Counseling: Is it Significant? Abstract This paper will identify what spiritual warfare is and how it integrates into counseling, and explore steps to take in recognizing spiritual problems. It will assess the benefits of spiritual growth and why it benefits a person, and whether it is crucial to counseling. The illumination of the responsibility of the counselor to the counselee will also be addressed. The purpose will be to see if the understanding of the spiritual life and the application of that type of counseling is beneficial. Introduction Is the problem physical, mental, or spiritual? This paper will aid in understanding spiritual warfare, the counselor’s responsibility in recognizing it, and the spiritual growth that is needed to for the counselor and counselee for productive therapy. The professional field of psychology is opening up to the idea of spiritual formation and the benefits of being spiritually aware. This is profitable, but can also present some problems if the counselor does not understand what they are dealing with, and they are spiritually inept. Counselors should understand spiritual warfare; understand their role, and how to obtain knowledge and guidance by spiritual growth. Spiritual Warfare There are instances where conventional medicines do not suffice in helping someone overcome their predicament. This is because the physical world of medicine cannot identify with spiritual world of conflict.......

Spiritual Gifts

...Spiritual gifts are defined by “www.biblicalstudies.com” as “things characterized or controlled by the spirit”, In my definition, spiritual gifts are gifts given to Christians by God so that they can further administer the gospel (good news) of the coming/resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. Examples of Spiritual gifts listed in the New Testament are : 1. Prophecy 2. Serving 3. Teaching 4. Encouragement 5. Wisdom and Knowledge 6. Faith 7. Healing 8. Miracles 9. Speaking/ interpreting tongues 10. Discernment  "False christs and false prophets are going to appear and produce great signs and wonders to mislead, if it were possible, even God's own people. Listen, I am warning you." Mat 24:25  Spiritual Gifts are, in my opinion, given to Christians by God for the purpose of making non-believers of Christ believe, by doing miraculous actions allowed by God, in order to spread the message of his Holy Church. Question 2 “Define each spiritual gift and its operation as recorded by Paul” 1 peter 4-10 states “just as each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of the varied grace of God”. Bible scriptures referring to spiritual gifts are: 1 Corinthians chapters 12-14; Romans chapter 12; Ephesians chapter 4; and 1 Peter chapter 4. Spiritual gifts must be important to the Spirit of God who inspired the writing of the Word of God and thus they should be important to us. 1. Prophecy: The gift of prophecy is...

Spiritual Gifts

...Janice Hileman CHMN 201-B02 05/19/2014 Spiritual Gifts Paper . PART ONE: What are your top two Spiritual Gifts? Do you agree with the results? Why or why not? My top two Spiritual Gifts are: (1) Evangelism; and (2) Pastor/ Shepherd tied with Showing Mercy. I completely agree with the results . I agree because I am a very compassionate woman. I love people and also willing to help those in need. I am able to sympathize and empathize with people who may have problems that others might feel uncomfortable with. I am also a very good listener. I love to share the Gospel with others and bring the lost to know Jesus Christ. I am truly blessed to have these gifts that God has given me. PART TWO: Specifically, how can you use your gifts at this time? How might you misuse your gifts? Be specific. There are many ways I can use my gifts today. In my Church there are people who often come to me to “unload” what’s going on in their Lives. I am always there to listen and give them the best advice I can. I show mercy by going with a group from the church to visit the ones who are shut-ins and letting them know that we care for them and that they are not alone. Outside the church I volunteer for Domestic and Sexually abused women’s shelter. I do a weekly Bible study and I teach some of them how to cook. I soon will be taking the required training to be a Christian Counselor. I also post Scripture, Devotionals, and......

Character Formation

...be remembered, however, that tastes and talents vary, and that children may not develop in the same direction and yet may be developing on right lines. Thus, Benjamin West was inspired by a passion for painting, Mendelssohn lived for music, Stephenson was influenced by the steam engine at the pit’s mouth, and Pope began, as a child, to write imitations of the poets. Just as the handwriting of no two children is alike, so no two characters are exactly similar, and different persons are attracted by different examples. Though these diversities of taste should be allowed full scope, it should never be forgotten that honour, purity and charity should be the common aim of all, what-ever their talents. Another important factor in the formation of character is habit. It is by habit that character is fixed, just as it is by conduct that it is indicated. The practice of shirking work quickly grows and, if allowed to obtain a firm hold, will be found most difficult to eradicate. One lie will lead to another; the conscience will become accustomed to wounds and finally cease to protest. Indulgence in vice may, if frequently practiced, very quickly become almost a necessity, and so sap the powers that the vicious become a burden to themselves and to others. On the contrary good habits, though more difficult to form than bad habits, are within the power of all who are not radically weak, and, once formed, will result in the production of a healthy man, a worthy citizen, a......

Spiritual Gifts

...My Spiritual Gifts Part 1 [pic] Eunice T. Payne June 5, 2014 Revised August 13, 2014 INTRODUCTION When I was asked to go online and take a spiritual gift test my first thought was, (“Lord what the world is coming to”?) We really have to rely on the internet for everything these days?” Then I thought hey why not take it what can it hurt, I’ll go on and humor them. As I started to read the questions I felt like the questions needed more substance or needed to be worded differently; not realizing the devil was trying to discourage me from reading what I was about to find out. \ By the time I finished the test it read PASTOR, FAITH, GIVING. Each word had a meaning or explanation for each one. I looked real hard at “Pastor” and laugh then I called my son who is a minister and yes he’s from the old school like his momma. I said son I just took this test and explained to him what is was for. Of course he had the same reaction as I did when I was told about the site. He laughed. Well as we went on in conversation I gave him the end results and said now what I look like being a Pastor. I mean I have been around a lot of spiritual gifted people for most of my life and have been told by several that there’s an anointing on my life or that my light shines bright and have a spirit of victory, but never did I hear anyone say I would be a pastor or fit those shoes. Then a voice said you have been ministering to people young and old for over 20 years and you don’t...

Evangelical Anxieties over Spiritual Formation

...Page 1 Article Review – Evangelical Anxieties Over Spiritual Formation Steve L. Porter addresses the evangelical anxieties over spiritual formation in his article Sanctification in a New Key: Relieving Evangelical Anxieties Over Spiritual Formation. The author explains that although there are a plethora of views and meanings for the word spiritual formation, he is going to go through eight notable objections to spiritual formation with the two ideas of recognizing the cautions and corrections that need to be made, and to partially alleviate the objections. The eight objections are spiritual formation is just another passing fad, spiritual formation is Catholic, spiritual formation is new age, spiritual formation is contrary to the sufficiency of scripture, what ever happened to good old-fashioned obedience, spiritual formation encourages works righteousness, spiritual formation is overly experiential, and spiritual formation neglects missions/evangelism. The first objection, spiritual formation is just another passing fad, is concerned that “the evangelical community will have re-tooled its message and programs for the sake of what turns out to be just another passing fad” (Porter). Why would one want to partake in a movement that will ultimately die out? Porter simply puts that what Christians should focus on is the positive contribution that it makes to society through the teachings and practices of spiritual formation. The practices and teachings will become ordinary......

Developing a Spiritual Assessment Toolbox

...Developing a Spiritual Assessment Toolbox A. Wilmer Developing a Spiritual Assessment Toolbox Summary When a client’s spirituality is an active component of his belief system and culture, assessing his quality of life from a mental health perspective would not be complete without an accurate assessment of his spiritual needs (Hodge, 2005). Experts are stating that a holistic approach to counseling incorporates both psychological and spiritual assessments (Hodge, 2005). The accrediting body of hospitals, Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), recognizes the importance of spiritual assessments and recommends that health care providers conduct these assessments to understand their clients’ religious beliefs and spiritual habits (Hodge, 2005). David Hodge (2005) presents a review of five qualitative assessment tools for effective analysis of a client’s spiritual and cultural wherewithal. The design of these assessment tools gives a more definitive construction of a client’s worldview for the purposes of integrating spiritual beliefs and attitudes in the therapeutic process and discharge planning (Hodge, 2005). Hodge asserts that this form of assessment allows the healthcare professional to explore a client’s “spiritual strengths that might be used to ameliorate problems or cope with difficulties” (Hodge, 2005, para. 1). The five qualitative assessment tools offered by Hodge (2005) provide a detailed description and comparison of each......

Spiritual Disaster

...this type of crisis individual, group, and community suffer loss of property, love ones, cultural unity and spiritual belief in isolation. Although they are given material supports and even moral supports, it cannot be compared with the spirituality effectiveness that survivors gone through. This is a major issue which needs to be addressed apart from medical treatment, spiritual restoration should be put in place to help resolve the immediate crisis and help restore the victim to a sense of normalcy or level of functioning equal to or higher than prior to the crisis. Most disaster survivors tend to look for higher power as a source for strength and hope during these difficult times. Therefore spiritual care providers should be made available to assist them to regain their trust in God and healing of minds.

Spiritual Gifts

...naturally, we call it a gift. But God also gave us another special gift. These gifts were assigned to us so we can help spread the gospel and further fulfill our duty within the church. They are called spiritual gifts. "The term charisma ("spiritual gift")... signifies redemption or salvation as the gift of God's grace (Rom. 5:15; 6:23) and a gift enabling the Christian to perform his service in the church (1 Cor. 7:7), as well as defining a special gift enabling a Christian to perform a particular ministry in the church." (Elwell, 2001) The spiritual gifts include: Woking of Miracles, Gifts of Healing, The Gift of Helpers, The Gift of Governments or Administration, The Gift of Faith, Apostleship, Prophets, The Gift of Discernming of Spirits, The Gift of Teaching, The Gift of Exhortation, The Gift of Wisdom, The Gift of Knowledge, The Gift of Tongues, The Gif of Interperetation of Tongues, The Evangalist, Service, Contribution, Acts of Mercy, and Giving. According to Galatians 5:22-23, "...the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law." Personally, I believe spiritual gifts are no good without the fruit of the Spirit. Because one can have the fruit of the Spirit without spiritual gifts, but the gifts are useless if one does not do it out of love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindess, goodness...ect....

Spiritual Jounrey

...My spiritual journey is probably much like yours, with the main goal of trying to discover myself. What I like, and what I don’t like. What I believe, and what I don’t believe. Who I want to be, and who I don’t want to be. Although I’ve only had 21 years to work on this, I’ve come quite a long way from where I started. My grandfather was a minister, so ever since I can remember I have been attending church. It wasn’t until I was 12 however that I really found a connection to what some would call The Mystery, a Higher Power, or as I refer to it, God. There is a place in Jaffrey, NH called Monadnock Bible Conference. They run Christian based week long retreats year round for young adults, and it is here that I consider the beginning of my journey. These retreats were full of fun and games along with two worship services each day. These worship sessions were much like sermons, but catered to youth to keep us engaged. We listened to youth pastors and young adult speakers from all over the country who challenged and guided us in our faith. Along with these speakers were incredible Christian rock bands who played songs that moved us to get up and dance, and even knee down and pray. I remember attending one of the retreats right after starting 7th grade. I was overwhelmed by my new school, the peer pressure of new friends, and other typical 13 year old problems. I was listening to one of the speakers talk about how amazing God is, that when you have a relationship with him you......

Spirituals

...Spirituals Swing Low, Sweet Chariot If you view the song as carrying a religious message, explain what the chariot represents. What is meant by the word "home"? What is the overall subject of the song? The chariot represents death. The poet asks it to come carry him/her home. Home means heaven. The subject of the song is being tired and wanting to die peacefully. This is an old slavery song and is sung in many churches. If you interpret this song as a protest song, depicting a slaves desire for freedom, explain what the chariot represents. What is meant by the word "home"? What does Jordan, the river that formed the boundary to the Promised Land in ancient times, represent in this case? What does the "band of angels" represent? I do not view this song as a protest song, but if it were, the chariot would mean rescue and home would still mean heaven or a place of freedom. Jordan would represent the gate to heaven and the band of angels would represent a rescue party. For what types of situations would people write protest songs today? People might write protest songs about events like the attack on Paris or about certain political figures. Give an example of a modern-day protest song (name and artist who performs it) and briefly summarize what message it contains. (You do not need to provide the lyrics.) An example of a modern-day protest song is “Wake Me Up When September Ends” by Green Day. The song is protesting the Bush Organization and 9/11. Go Down,......

Spiritual Dispilines

...• Disciplines of Abstinence • The spiritual disciplines of abstinence reveal the nature of the battle between the flesh and the spirit. By abstaining from food, social interaction, or sleep, we are "exercising" our spiritual muscles against the lower nature. It is like lifting weights; silly in itself, but useful to prepare us for real physical tests in the future. The things we abstain from in the spiritual disciplines are not evil; it is for the sake of the exercise that we deny ourselves; to prepare us for real temptation--tomorrow, or the next day. 1 Cor 6:12 (KJV) All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any. • The disciplines of abstinence give us much needed experience and insight into the spiritual battle going on within us, and the lessons learned cannot be taught any other way. What is it like to say "No" to the lower nature? What tricks will it play? The way in which desire, habit, distraction, and other factors effect you will not be like anyone else. You must learn by doing how to live in holiness before God in your body. The disciplines of abstinence are an opportunity to train in safety. 1 Pet 2:11 (Phi) I beg you, as those whom I love, to live in this world as strangers, and "temporary residents", to keep clear of the desires of your lower natures, for they are always at war with your souls. 1 Pet 1:13 (NIV) Therefore, prepare your minds for action; be......
