Explain the likely benefits to Starbucks of its induction (orientation) training programme
One benefit to Starbucks of its induction training programme is that all of their employees have all of the skills and knowledge they need. By sharing with their employees why they have such a strong passion for coffee their employees gain a passion for coffee which then helps them gain much more passion for their job. When customers come in to a Starbucks and they can see the passion that their staff have for coffee it makes them feel more comfortable in that environment and because they have had such a positive customer experience it makes them want to come back and also recommend Starbucks to their friends and family increasing the number of potential new and repeat customers. Another benefit to Starbucks of its induction training programme is that its employees feel like they are part of the team and not at a great disadvantage with their lack of experience. This benefits Starbucks as their employees settle into their roles extremely quickly and come out of their shells much faster than what they may do otherwise allowing them to get the most out of their employees from very early on as all employees who feel like they are part of the team and accepted by everyone in the team settle in to their new role in their new job much faster than employees who don’t feel like they are part of the team and that not many people in the team like them.

According to Goleman (1998) EI is the capacity to recognise our own feelings and those of others, for motivating ourselves, and for managing emotions well in us and in our relationships. Building commitment and trust rapidly is of the essence to work effectively together within a project (Burgess and Turner, 2000) thus knowledge on EI can be of distinct advantage to project managers. This article questions whether EI can be developed to improve project management competencies by targeting a number of emotional abilities and empathy for training. Three hypothesises (i.e. improvements in emotional abilities, empathetic abilities and project management [PM] competencies in relation to teamwork and conflict management will be found not immediately but six months after the post training period) were tested in the study. Participants of the programme included a total of three groups: one from each of the two organisations' which required participation and one group from the Project Management Institute chapter. This is because of the few number of females in the institution which comprise of only 52 representing 7% of the total students population (742) thus making a ratio of (13:1). These finding is in line with Moser (1989) who postulated that, women continue to be under-represented in formal business training programmes thus limiting their employment options, economic returns and longer term career development. Poor and vulnerable women are usually more interested in skills training that meets their immediate ‘practical gender needs’ as opposed to longer term, “strategic gender needs” that directly tackle the basic underlying causes of female subordination (see Moser 1989). Women are often concentrated in handicrafts, basic food processing and sale which are traditionally considered to be women’s domain.
