As America has evolved from an untamed wilderness into a settled country what it has meant to be a man in America has also changed. The movies Last of the Mohicans, Jeremiah Johnson, and Glory each portray men in different areas and time periods in America. Mohican hunters and trappers in Last of the Mohicans, a mountain man in Jeremiah Johnson, and African-American civil war soldiers in Glory. The behavior of the protagonists in these movies illustrates what was expected from them and how they dealt with those expectations. Although the movies were very different they all espoused the need for bravery and honor in a man.

The film Last of the Mohicans, based on a book by James Fennimore Cooper, is the story of a white man named Hawkeye and two Mohican Indians. The film takes place during the French and Indian War. During the war many settlers volunteered or were coerced into fighting for the English. Hawkeye and the Indians are brought into the war when they save two daughters of an English general and agree to take them to an English fort. On the way there they find the family of a friend of theirs murdered by Indians. When they get to the fort Hawkeye tells others settlers about it and they want to leave the battle to protect their families. He helps them do that against the orders of the English; but stays because he has feelings for one of the women he saved although though he knows he will be punished. This illustrates his bravery and willingness to take responsibility for his actions. The fort is captured by the French and as the English are leaving they are attacked and massacred by Indians. Hawkeye saves the girls once again and attempts to escape with them even as they are chased by Indians. They make it to a waterfall where there is no way for them to escape with the women. Hawkeye dives off the waterfall vowing to find and save the girls. An English…...

Start a New Career

...Start a New Career student MGT/521 January 17, 2011 teacher Abstract The following paper will address arguments supporting a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) and the considerations for the start of a new job. With over twenty years in the US Armed Forces, I will soon be faced with closing the current chapter on my proud military career and optimistically open a new chapter within a Department of Defense (DoD) Civil Service Agency or US Government Contract Agency. In preparation of this juncture, I feel to achieve an MBA will complement my global experience and bring all my technical, leadership, and management expertise together in a more lucrative upper management role. Start a New Career For most starting a new career can be a bit scary. Fortunately for those of us with a great deal of longevity in the military the ability to step ahead in the interview line is greater than those who have not served in the US Armed Forces. Many employers realize veterans bring a lot of value to their table, such as; accelerated learning curve, leadership, teamwork, diversity and inclusion in action, efficient performance under pressure, respect for procedures, international and technical trends, integrity, conscious of health and safety standards, and triumph over adversity (Veterans Today, 2010). Veterans also bring life experiences which only the military can bestow, soft-skills that unite individuals of all incomes, race, and nationalities, changing their......

...We want to start up a solar energy company, which manufactures products utilizing solar energy work. Below are several reasons why we would like to start up this company. Solar products have a huge market in domestic and overseas. Because solar products haven't promoted on a large scale yet. If we start up the solar energy company now, we will capture a large market share; Besides solar energy is a kind of free resource, people don't need to spend money on it, so people can be more pleased to accept solar products, and now we can manufacture many solar products, such as solar power generation system, solar cells, solar water heater, etc. Solar products will go into people's life soon. Here is another reason, solar products is the trend of future prouducts. Because exploiting and utilizing solar energy is becoming popular, and many countries have established "sunshine plan" already; The most important is that Solar energy can replace increasing shortage of natural resources, such as oil, coal and other non-renewable resources, it can relieve the current energy crisis; Meanwhile solar energy is a kind of clean resource. there is no pollution, when we use it, therefore I believe that most people will choose our products. In my opinion, the nature resource is impossible to satisfy the needs of the long-term development of human. Human must look for alternative sources of energy, and solar energy is the best choice of human. The future of solar energy's development will......

Head Start or False Start

... | | | December 21,2013 | [Head Start or false start] | A strategy to adequately plan projects in the intense and rapid changing healthcare setting of today is imperative to implementing successful projects. | Executive Summary Currently, healthcare is one of the leading topics across the nation ranging from quality improvements to cost reductions. No matter the public focus, projects have become a major part of health systems large and small. As complex projects trend upward in the healthcare industries, the implementation for project management best practices has become a necessity. Many organizations lack experienced project management methods and may even neglect to see the importance of such principles. These factors along with the extreme pressures to execute projects quickly and effectively has given light to increased project false starts. A project false start negatively impacts the project, the organization morale, and ultimately the company’s bottom line. Causes can range from lack of project management knowledge, simple neglect, or tight deadlines. Whatever the cause, there are preventive measures available. In elementary terms, the best defense is to PLAN first. But, even more so, your organization must complete proper project selection and initiation phases before progressing into the next phases of the project lifecycle. Introduction New ideas often bring excitement and momentum; however, rushing into project execution may actually increase the......

...Chapter 1 I Get What I Pay For Welcome to Red Grove. Population 200 “Now, two hundred and one,” I murmured as I passed the painted wooden sign in my trusty red Jeep. Small towns like Red Grove always made me think of horror movies as if a gap-toothed, overall-wearing butcher might hobble out of his deep woods shanty, pitchfork in hand, at any moment. The town had an off the charts creepy factor. On my right, a dark forest worthy of the Brothers Grimm. On my left, a cemetery edged in a weathered wrought iron fence. I think there were more than two hundred headstones. More dead than living. Nice. There must be some mistake. I came here to start over. Could a new life be hiding behind the unappealing rural exterior? My promised house remained a mystery. I double-checked the notebook with my father’s scrawled directions resting on the passenger’s seat next to me. Technically, I’d lived in Red Grove as a child, but we’d moved before I turned two. I didn’t remember the town at all or the residents, living or dead. I shifted my attention back to my driving. “Holy shit!” I proclaimed as I overcorrected the wheel, and my foot drifted from the gas. The man on the side of the road was so attractive I could’ve died—literally. He was planting something. A tree, I think. Every time his shovel hit the dirt, a ripple coursed through his shoulders and down his stomach. I raised an eyebrow at the glint of sun on tanned, shirtless skin. Dark hair, low slung jeans. I tried not......

Head Start

...The news article that I found in the San Diego Union tribune talks about Head start preschools in San Diego. The article was titled “Head Start preschool accused of negligence.” This article in particular discusses how the license of a Head start in the Encinitas area was revoked due to many different complaints. In February, The Head Start by the Sea in Encinitas field to supervise a 4-year-old child who was able to tie a rope around his neck. Although no major damages were done, it was stated that the child suffered minor hemorrhages in his eyes and the line from the rope was visible on the boy’s neck. This head start program did not notify the boy’s mother of the incident but rather accused the incident of happening outside of the classroom. Rudolph Johnson III, the Neighborhood House president, stated, “We believe it happened at home(McDonald,2008).” Head Start took no responsibility of the unsupervised boy and was not promoting policies for the well being of the child. This child was in a dangerous position with no supervision. This incident violated the code of ethics in many different ways. First, the code of ethics states in principle 1.1 that the center will not “harm children. We shall not participate in practices that are emotionally damaging, physically harmful, disrespectful, degrading, dangerous, exploitative, or intimidating to children. In this instance, the little 4-year-old boy was unsupervised allowing him to harm himself. Also, the boy must have learned...

Art of the Start

...Brad Soltau Entrepreneurial Marketing Sandra Potter DATE \@ "MMMM d, y" September 25, 2014 Art of the Start Quiz Positioning is the focus of chapter two in Art of the Start, by Guy Kawasaki. All new companies need to great positioning to be successful and develop their brand. The startup that I believe created successful positioning is called, Plated. Plated is a New York City based startup formed in 2012 by Josh Hix and Nick Taranto. Plated is a website where users can see different recipes from chefs around the world. If there is a recipe that you like, you can can request the dish, then Plated sends you exactly every ingredient you need. This tackles the common issue of buying too much or not enough of an ingredient when preparing a meal. This startup also allows users to try a variety of dishes that they may have not heard of. Plated was also featured on this past season of ABC’s Shark Tank in efforts to raise more money to branch out into the mid-west and west coast. My girlfriend Tammy and I frequently use Plated to make meals, and as a customer I have always been satisfied. The best thing about Plated is that they send you all the ingredients, measured out perfectly, all you do is follow the recipe instructions. Also, if they send you meat or fish, they make sure to place it in an ice pack bag to keep it fresh. When I first heard about Plated I realized that they have made their service for people who don’t have time to make meals and for people who don’t......

Start College

...What three things motivated you to start college? The three main reasons that motivated me to start college was myself, my family and my current job. I have always wanted to go to college and have a bachelor’s degree, but I let life get in the way. I had my son at an early age, and from that moment on I knew he would be my main focus. I had to go to work and provide the best I could for him even though we were young. Fast forward 7 years, he is in second grade and is starting to become much more independent. I finally found time and motivation to go to school and further my education. Doing so will afford me the ability to spend more time with my family, as my current job requires me to work holidays and weekends. My second reason for enrolling in college is my current job. I have been working retail for over 10 years and can no longer be promoted without a college degree. I have decided to go to college and get a degree to either move forward on my current career path or start fresh. My preference is to change careers since I want to leave retail, even though I know the potential risks I could face. The main reasons for wanting to leave my current job are stability and always missing out on family events, especially major holidays. My plan is to get my bachelors in Human Resources Management with a minor in Psychology. Then once I complete this, continue to work towards my masters and become a social worker. However, while looking for social worker jobs or learning the...

Start over

...Pedro Torres Pj Clark English Comp. 1 December 3, 2015 Start Over I have made many mistakes in my life, from saying the wrong thing to someone or just being an ass, mistakes are common. If I had the opportunity to start over and fix mistakes I have made I would do it in a heartbeat. I would change the time I hurt the people I loved, how I acted and approached high school, and last I would have focused a lot more in staying in shape and doing good in sports. It’s often said we hurt the people we love the most and that couldn’t be more true. If I could go back and change how I handled past relationships I would have the weight of the world off my shoulder. I was a big cheater I literally had a different girl for everyday of the week. I would have sex with a girl then never talk to her again. I’m pretty sure there are some little ME’s running around the world right now. Am I proud of that no, but that’s the life I chose. I also would have changed how I spoke to my mother. Getting an attitude and being disrespectful to the women who did so much for me. I would come late and totally ignored the rules. I would tell her how she was a bad mother and often say things I didn’t mean. If I could go back, I would do good for her. That includes doing what I’m asked to do and doing well in high school. When I was in high school I did not care. I played sports and to stay in sports all I would have to do is not get any F’s. I could get all D’s and go on to the next year without a......

Head Start

...Head Start 1 Running Head: HEAD START Social Policy Study Improving Head Start Act of 2007 Kristin Sancken University of Minnesota Head Start 2 I. Introduction Head Start is a beloved program and one of the few social welfare programs that continues to garner strong support from both sides of the aisle. It has seen very little shift in public perception over the last 44 years since it’s creation as part of President Johnson’s Office of Economic Opportunity, and politicians have framed it essentially the same way during that time, namely, a way to provide the least fortunate with a chance at educational opportunity. Every few years, the Head Start Act must be reauthorized by the U.S. House and Senate in order to continue receiving federal funding. The Head Start Act itself states that its purpose is to, “promote the school readiness of low-income children by enhancing their cognitive, social, and emotional development”(U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2008). Head Start focuses on growth in a variety of areas such as acquisition of language, literacy, math, science, social and emotional functioning, creative arts, and physical education (Kildee, 2007; U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2008). To reach these lofty goals, Head Start provides a holistic blend of services to low-income children and their families, based on family needs (Kildee, 2007; U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2008). The latest......

Start with Why

...Ian Misiak BSNS 4510 Dr. Haskett 9 February 2016 Start with Why Paper #2 In my level 5 story, through recollection of my past experiences, whether it was from my past thoughts of swimming, long drive home, or church experiences, the positive emotions I felt were peace, humility, love, anticipatory, positivity and honor. These emotions are foundational to who I am as a person and shape who I am. These emotions I hold at different levels of who I am. Firstly, within the confines of my passions, I would say that at the base root is love. I love to love others and I love life. That’s the foundation of why I do what I do for anything. I also think that my other passion is peace. I seek peace with others and desire harmony and strength with others and through others. It’s foundational to me and also the reasons why I do what I do. I really desire both peace and love for myself and others because I believe that is why we are created for what we do. Similarly to in “Start With Why”, when it is discussed that people and companies can copy you and do what you do but they cannot emulate what you do exactly because they do not have the reasons why. This is the same in my life where people want to try to seek similar things as me but they aren’t going to do it exactly the way that I do it. For that reason I have been through different experiences and have a passion that is specific to me and who I am. That is not to say that I am better than anyone else, but to suggest that we all......

Business Start

...Business Start With the economic downturn, students in all the major business schools have been dropping out of their entrepreneurship classes and transferring back to classes where they think they have a secure future. Students and professionals who were once planning to start businesses now have decided to go back to their cushy jobs. Everything is going back to normal. Or at least that is how it looks. Below are nine reasons why any student should start a business: 1. You gain experience. Owning and running your own business is an incredible way to gain experience and credentials regardless of whether you decide to stay in business once you graduate. Jaime Gonzalez of Oklahoma State University received the highest job offer in his entire graduating class. Now, there are two kickers: First, he was the founder of an IT consulting company, and second, he had a 2.4 GPA I wonder if starting a business helps in getting a better job when you graduate? 2. You have nothing to lose. I think it's safe to say that most students dip into their parents' checkbook when it comes time to pay the bills. In general, students aren't paying child support, rent, utilities and many other expenses. The worst thing that could happen if your business fails is that you get a job, have an incredible credential on your resume, and have experience that will increase your chances of success in the future. The best thing that can happen is that you'll become the next Microsoft. I don't know about...

...First Things First An opening check list is a great place to start. Remember that airline pilots are required to use a checklist before they take off! Here are items you should have on your opening checklist. Add additional items that would be appropriate for your own business. Do I have a one-year cash flow projection prepared to insure there will be ongoing liquidity? Do I have the necessary e-commerce tools in place? Are all insurance policies in force? If I plan to sell on credit terms, is my credit rating policy in place to avoid taking on customers with poor credit ratings? (The last thing you need is to have customers who don't pay on time, and good customers will respect you for this policy). Is my business plan complete and in written format? Does it include pre-opening, first year and long-range planning? It will play a key role in securing investors and will help uncover any weaknesses in the planning process. Have I taken the time to gain practical job experience and learn the basics of my business by first working in the business for someone else? (This is probably the best way to discover if you have made a choice that will be not only successful, but also satisfying to you.) Have I budgeted adequately for prototypes, research, sampling and trials? Have I successfully test-marketed my product or service? Was the response positive? (If not, you need to re-design, re-work and re-test.) Have I focused on......
