Is television a Bad Influence On Children?

What has the world come to these days? It often seems like everywhere one looks, violence rears its ugly head. We see it in the streets, school, and even at home. The last of these is a major source of violence. In many peoples living rooms there sits an outlet for violence that often goes unnoticed. It is the television, and the children who view it are often pulled into its realistic world of violence scenes with sometimes devastating results. Much research has gone into showing why children are so mesmerized by this big glowing box and the action that takes place within it. Research shows that it is definitely a major source of violent behavior in children. The research proves time and time again that aggression and television viewing do go hand in hand. Violence on television is bad for children because it causes lifelong aggressiveness, trauma and desensitization. The truth about television violence and children has been shown. Some are trying to fight this problem. Others are ignoring it and hoping it will go away. Still others don't even seem to care. However, the facts are undeniable. The studies have been carried out and all the results point to one conclusion: Television violence causes children to be aggressive and the effects can be life-long. The information can't be ignored. Violent television viewing does affect children. The effects have been seen in a number of cases. In New York, a 16-year-old boy broke into a store. When the police caught him and asked him why he was wearing gloves he replied that he had learned to do so to not leave fingerprints and that he discovered this on television. In Alabama, a nine-year-old boy received a bad report card from his teacher. He suggested sending the teacher poisoned candy as revenge as he had seen on television the night before. In California, a…...

...receive some cash from the proceeds from the sale of all the assets during the liquidation of Jones Company. Should you follow the instructions of the CEO? Why or why not? Provide specific details to support your opinion in your response. A company's accounts receivable are among its most important assets, representing sales that have not yet been paid for or converted to cash. In ordinary business, bad debts refer primarily to losses arising from transactions made on credit (accounts receivable) in the normal course of business. We, accountants, can account for bad debts in two ways: (a) The Direct Write-off Method where bad debts may be deducted against income at the time they have been definitely certain to be uncollectible or (b) the Allowance Method where a reserve for probable losses may be established over time, ordinarily at the close of the period. Regardless of what method the company is using, I will advise the CEO to show the true picture of the financial condition of the company. If the company is using the Allowance method and the Allowance for Bad Debts Account has enough balance to absorb the amount owes, writing off the whole amount has no impact on the current income. But, I will make a note on the Balance Sheet that Jones Company, a major client, went bankrupt that the collection of money owes is uncertain and partial recovery is expected through the sale of their assets. Likewise, if the company is using the Direct write-off method, I......

Bad Movies

...are always on the look out for a “good” story. Good, however, doesn’t necessarily mean critically acclaimed. Sure, we can love the charm of Toy Story 3 and we can also hate on the horrendously bad acting of The Last Airbender. But sometimes, movies can be so bad that they actually are good. These movies are so predictable, rushed, and just plain bad that they actually are hilarious. Viewers find castigating these movies to be extremely entertaining. Now, some people watch movies not because of their good reputation, but instead because of the universal panning of the film by movie critics. They flock to the movie theaters once they hear how bad a movie is just to criticize it. It turns out that movies don’t have to be likeable or critically acclaimed in order to be “good.” Here are a few examples of movie SO bad, they’re actually good. Troll 2 This movie was so bad that the director renamed it from “Goblins” to “Troll 2” in order to pass it as a sequel to the unrelated Troll movie. The movie centers around a family on vacation landing in the town of Nilbog (read that backwards) inhabited by goblins disguised as humans who wreak havoc and eat transformed vegetable liquid humans. That’s right, you read that correctly. Cannibal vegetable eating goblins. And you thought Twilight was bad. The Room Before its release, The Room was labeled as a black comedy about love, passion, betrayal, and lies. This movie definitely has lies–the whole movie itself is a big fat lie to the......

Bad Boys

...Bad Boys Ann Arnett Ferguson spent 3 years gathering research on African American youth in the school and how Adults, society, and the educational system views them. The superiors of these kids have a wrongfully prejudice conceptualization of them, more specifically the boys. Observations and stories of individual students help Ferguson make connections and find the underlying source of these kids’ preconceived notions to Adults and more importantly themselves. “In the course of course of my study it became clear that school labeling practices and the exercise of rules operated as part of a hidden curriculum to marginalize and isolate black male youth in disciplinary spaces and brand them as criminally inclined” Ann Arnett Ferguson, Bad Boys: Public Schools in the Making of Black Masculinity (University of Michigan, 2000) p2. Adultification does not have a simple definition. Ferguson theorized this idea while observing different kids during her case study. The term adultification describes the developmental process of youth and how outlying factors such as social and communal values are absorbed by kids. There is a prejudice that these observed teacher hold of these kids. These teachers use how the media portrays African American males to justify their views about all African American kids. This adultification is a distraction from the fact that they are kids, not criminals. “Adultification is visible in the way African American elementary school pupils are talked about......

Bad Bosses

...to recognize a good leader from bad ones. A leader is generally defined as someone who inspires, rules or guides the work activites of others. A good boss creates clear focus on desired outcomes, properly equip their operations for high performance and above all build strong working relationships and foster teamwork. He creates a climate where employees receive ongoing feedback and coaching and they strive to maintain a work-life balance. Flexibility, understanding and the ability to listen to the employees makes up some of the important characteristics of a good boss. On the contrary, a leader who criticizes, belittles and disrespects his employees earns the label of a bad boss. A bad boss fails to give recognition for the little things his employee does. Such leaders not only make life miserable for their employees, but hamper organizational performance. No one starts out their career trying to be a horrible boss. Yet, it is amazing to see that a vast majority of the folk seem to accomplish this feat with absolutely no training. It is possible that a good leader turns into bad under difficult situations. This could be personal or professional. Ergo, the perception of whether a boss is considered good or bad, should be based on factors considering the psychological state of the boss and the outlook of the employees being supervised. It is believed that every person has had a bad boss at one time or another......

A Bad Obsession

...an employee and gave him a drink that contains adhesive!" the T.V stated. In Collin Palmer's essay, "A Healthy Obsession," he explained how being obsessed is okay, and it does not affect anyone in a negative way, but it helps people in a positive way. Fans these days had been violating idols' private life, and they would do anything to get close to their favorite celebrities. Fans who stalks celebrities these days can take it too far which can cause them to do negative things to themselves and everyone else around them. Fans these days that stalk celebrities would imitate their favorite idols in many ways whether it is good or bad. In "The Impact Celebrities Have on Our Lives," written by Deborah King, she stated, "For instance, if you are not centered and balanced energetically, and you don't feel so good about who you are. you are much more likely to follow your favorite celebrities and wish that you could be them." What King meant is that fans do not like how they are or how they look like. They would most likely follow what their favorite celebrity's look or their way of acting so they could be like them, which can lower their self- esteem. In the same article by Deborah King, she stated, "The sad fact is that we are more enthralled by celebrities who have bad reputations than celebrities who are excellent role models." What King meant is that fans that are really obsessed with their favorite idol can be a bad thing because fans that want to be like their favorite idol......

Bad Apps

...the key criteria. mobiThinking acknowledges there are more key criteria to creating a quality app, in terms of usability, device compatibility, stability etc – and that’s true – but arguably, problems with battery consumption, data usage and security risks are some of the most important of all quality assurance (QA) criteria because: a) they are mostly hidden from consumers; b) they are more easily overlooked by developers; c) the consequences are far reaching. Bad apps affect the performance of the device, battery and network; inflate the phone bill; and most consumers blame the device, operator… anyone except the real culprits. If the user interface (UI) is rubbish or the app keeps crashing, there’s little doubt the app is to blame and users will happily broadcast their verdict in their app reviews. 1) Battery consumption Some mobile applications use a lot of energy, causing unnecessary drain on the (already heavily taxed) device battery. There are numerous reasons why this occurs and, where it is caused by bad, ignorant or devious development practices, it can and should be rectified. Causes of battery depletion include: • Apps that run without the user’s permission. Some applications start automatically when the handset is powered on or don’t go to sleep when the user stop using them. See the video review of Wakelock Detector below for examples of apps that started by themselves. Multitasking takes a lot of energy – the more apps that are in use at any one......

Bad Lunches

...she didn’t take the time to read over the entire contract. The agreement should be written out so that someone who has no legal experience can still understand it. There are a lot of different government agencies that will deal with a complaint issue. One such agency the state public utilities commission would be helpful in a dispute against a utility company. A financial service through the government would be helpful with problems about a bank. If a case doesn’t fall under a certain jurisdiction a district attorney or a state attorneys general may handle this case. A government can’t force a company to settle a dispute, but most companies will decide to settle on their own once a government official is involved. They don’t need the bad publicity that would follow if they tried to fight a losing battle. They would lose more customers and possibly lose business associates. The point is that if you feel that they are trying to trap you into a scam then you have the right to speak up and if your voice alone isn’t enough look for someone else to help you. I feel that if Sudsons were to take this case to court they would be opening themselves up for the public to see how they treat their consumers. The law would have the right to look into all of their records and they could lose a lot more customers than just the one. I feel that if they took this case to court they would lose for the simple fact that these type of clauses are considered illegal unless you follow a very......

...Gosh This Essay Smells Bad   In the article “Shitty First Drafts”, by Anne Lamott, she argues that writing is not such an  easy task, especially for professional writers in the writing process. She claims that writing takes  time and everyone must start from somewhere to become a better writer. Writing can be difficult  for experienced and inexperienced writers. I agree with Lamot that writing in a process is not  easy because writing can be frustrating, finding motivation to write and catching the reader's  attention.   Now don't get me wrong writing sounds easy but it's much more complicated than it  sounds. Writing actually frustrates me. Writing a first draft or prewrite can lead to frustration just  sitting there with a blank page in front of you. It takes me minutes or even hours just thinking  about how to write a paper. This completely drive me nuts. Even Authors who first started  writing novels struggled and got so frustrated at times to write the perfect book in there eyes. It  made them want to give up at times. But I believe it's something a experienced or inexperienced  writer could overcome and get through to write a good paper.   One thing that certainly got professional writers to write great novels or papers was  motivation. Motivation is a major key to writing a great paper. One of people's biggest mistakes  when writing is assuming they will receive a bad grade or bad review for their work. When they  assume this it usually causes th......

Racism in the T.V. Show Lost

...than most American shows is because it is set outside of the United States, therefore a more diverse cast is called for. In addition, on international flights, like the one flying from Sydney to L.A. in Lost, there are often people from all over the world. The Lost cast does have a wide range of people and cultures, but not as many as you would expect. In the graph below you can see the racial statistic of the main cast on the show. Figure 1. Race Statistic in Cast of T.V. Show Lost As you can see, two-thirds of the cast is white. This doesn’t necessarily mean they are all American though, which they aren’t. There are two cast members from Britain and one from Australia, but even after considering country of origin, the percentage of white Americans on the show is disproportionate to what it should be if the show was trying to make the statistics realistic. This next graph shows the new percentages with ones country of origin is taken into account. Figure 2. Continent of Origin Statistics in the Cast of T.V. Show Lost In the chapter “What’s Your Flava?” in the book Interrogating Postfeminism, Sarah Bamet-Weiser explores the issue of race in terms of how it is displayed in the media, particularly to children and young adults. She gives an example of a new doll being sold to children called Flava’s. They racially eclectic, but unfortunately they go about promoting diversity in the wrong fashion. Instead of solely displaying just different racial groups, they play......
