Barrow & Swift

...Barrow and Swift use different literary form to support their ideas about charity and generosity. Barrow uses sermon to persuade the rich people in his country to be charitable to the poor. Moreover, Barrow is being repetitive in his work, which is good because he wants to the readers to get his main ideas of being charitable to the poor, and he also relates charity to God and official Church of England. He emphasizes that being charitable will change God’s decisions on salvation and if you are not charitable you will be damned. His sermon also backed up by church’s doctrine, so the wealthy people of England believe on what Barrow stated. He stated that people were born equally, but economy in the world creates discrepancy between people, which he wants the poor also be equally recognized as a person and the poor can feel some luxuries that the rich people have. On the other hand Swift use ironic satire to mock about the careless attitude in his country, also he has gone to extreme on his proposal, giving nasty concept and illustration to draw people’s attention. In his work, he tells the poor family should sell their baby as food, because they will get money for it, and the burden of raising the children are gone. He also support his proposal by giving calculations of how much money the poor have to spend to raise a child and how much money will the family get for selling it. This sort of calculation supports his ideas that by following his proposal, poverty problem can......

Taylor Swift

...Reading, Pennsylvania was a little girl with big hopes and dreams. Taylor Swift was a girl who spent most of her childhood singing and writing songs. At the age of nine Taylor turned her attention to musical theatre and performed in Berks Youth Theatre Academy productions of Grease and Annie. She traveled regularly to Broadway, New York for vocal and acting lessons. However after a few years of auditioning in New York and not getting anything she became interested in country music. At the age of twelve, Swift was shown by a computer repairman how to play three chords on a guitar, inspiring her to write her first song “Lucky You.” Taylor said “People haven’t always been there for me but music always has.” At the age of fourteen Taylor moved to Nashville and was offered a record deal with RCA records. Swift was ready at the age of fifteen to release an album with her own materials but the company wanted to wait until she was eighteen but she knew she was ready to launch her career with her own material, so she left that record company. At a café in Nashville, Swift caught the attention of Scott Borchetta, a DreamWorks records executive who was preparing to form his own independent record label, Big Machine records. Taylor was one of his new labels first signings. Since then she has written over 200 songs which all written about her true experience and feelings. Taylor Swift

...Taylor Swift In the history of the music industry, there have been very few artists like Taylor Swift. It is extremely rare to find someone with several musical talents as well as an exceptional songwriting gift. From growing up on a Christmas tree farm in Pennsylvania to becoming one of the world’s most famous country singers, Taylor Swift has impacted the lives of many different types of people around the globe. With her parents Scott and Andrea, as well as her younger brother Austin, Swift grew up in the small Pennsylvanian town of Wyomissing. Before her interest in country music, Swift participated in a few children’s musical theater productions (Danielsen 1). One of her mentors noticed her special talent and suggested that Swift should consider pursuing a music career. Swift took up the suggestion and started getting involved with local competitions and open-mike gigs. By the age of 12, Swift began to learn the guitar on her own as well as beginning to write some of her own songs. Swift’s parents recognized Taylor’s passion for country music and decided to bring their daughter to Nashville to perform at small gigs, hoping to attract someone’s attention. Fortunately record label holder Scott Borchetta was hooked when he saw Swift perform one night at the Bluebird Cafe. At the age of 15, Taylor Swift was signed to Borchetta’s Big Machine Records . This was just the beginning of her successful music career (“Taylor Swift” 1). In August 2006, Swift released her first......

Interpret Meanings Behind Shake It Off Lyrics by Taylor Swift

...Amanda Medina AMST101 QUIZ #1 : Popular Music “Shake It Off” by Taylor Swift I choose this song because firstly, this song is one of the most popular song lately in America since the day it was released it was the #1 hit song on Billboard. For me personally, this song has a very catchy melody, where at first the band started of with an up-beat drum which could create a feelings of excitement. There are also a couple of repetition on the hook, 'Cause the players gonna play, play, play, play, play And the haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate
Baby, I'm just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake I shake it off, I shake it off Heart-breakers gonna break, break, break, break, break And the fakers gonna fake, fake, fake, fake, fake
Baby, I'm just gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake I shake it off, I shake it off So I think these repetition makes it easier for listeners to remember the song words, also the melody. Additionally, this song talks about a girl who’s brave, confident, happy and she doesn’t care about what people thinks on her. If we see from the lyrics, Taylor uses a different kinds of words in every new chorus which makes the song interesting and not boring. In some part of the song, she sings the melody into a slower and softer sound to show the feelings where she’s chill and just go with the flow of music she listens to, But I keep cruising..
Can't stop, won't stop moving.. It's like I got this music…
In my mind, saying, "It's gonna be......

Swift as a Misanthrope

...Some would argue that Swift was a misanthrope and thatGulliver's Travels proves his hatred of mankind. Agree or disagree with this assessment and support your opinion with examples from the text. Jonathan Swift is undoubtedly is a great artist. He had to face unreasonable and prejudiced criticism in the hands of his contemporaries because he had unveiled the brutality of man which was hidden under the mask of humanism. Swift’s age was full of vices of corruption but still the people were satisfied. Swift gives us a true picture of the man of that age in “Gulliver’s Travels”. In the last voyage, his satire becomes very bitter when he presents horses more reasonable than man. Swift is notorious for being Misanthropist in the last part of the “Gulliver’s Travels” Swift has to face the allegation of being misanthropist for during whole of his life. It is because the critics attributed Gulliver’s blunders to Swift. But, he makes his aim in “Gulliver’s Travels” clear in his letter to Alexander Pope. He says, “The chief end of all my labour is to vex the world, rather than divert it”. Secondly, he declares that “He has ever hated all the nations, professions and communities and all his love for individuals.” He hates men but loves man. He hates the animal like vices in man; the crown of creation. He was shocked to see the follies of men of his age and didn’t consider this reasonable. But, this does not mean that he hates mankind, as he writes to Pope, “I tell you......

...ready to take down my opponent. The artist that motivates me the most and has had the most impact on my life would have to be Taylor Swift. Raised in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, she moved to Nashville, Tennessee, at the age of 14 to pursue a career in country music. She signed with the independent label Big Machine Records and became the youngest songwriter ever hired by the Sony/ATV Music publishing house. The release of Swift's self-titled debut album in 2006 established her as a country music star. Her third single, "Our Song," made her the youngest person to single-handedly write and perform a number-one song on the Hot Country Songs chart. She received a Best New Artist nomination at the 2008 Grammy Awards. Swift's second album, Fearless, was released in 2008. Buoyed by the pop crossover success of the singles "Love Story" and "You Belong with Me," Fearless became the best-selling album of 2009 in the United States. Jonathan Swift

...Jonathan Swift 1. Swift wrote "A Modest Proposal" under a pseudonym, so who is the speaker here? The speaker is a Protestant and a member of the Irish upper class. 2. Discuss the tone of the piece. Pull examples from the text to support your discussion. Swift showed disgust for the people who would rather beg than take care of themselves. He says, “These mothers instead of being able to work for their honest livelihood, are forced to employ all their time in strolling to beg sustenance for their helpless infants who, as they grow up, either turn thieves for want of work, or leave their dear native country, to fight for the Pretender in Spain, or sell themselves to the Barbados.” 3. As you know, effective argumentation appeals to logic (logos), ethics (ethos) and emotions (pathos). Please discuss how Swift uses all three appeals and how these tools impact his purpose. Swift appeals to logic by stating the issue at hand. He also appeals to logic by asking why it is the public’s responsibility to take care of these needy families. Swift appeals to pathos and ethos through the diction he uses when describing the problem. He wants the situation to change but he wants it to change for every party. 4. Explain the irony in Swift’s title, "A Modest Proposal." The title is ironic because the proposal is anything but modest. Swift presets an outrageous solution to an ongoing problem. His proposal calls attention to this problem in an extremely eye-catching way. He......
