SPEED READING (SKIMMING AND SCANNING)
Skimming and scanning are two specific speed-reading techniques, which enable you to cover a vast amount of material very rapidly.
SKIMMING
Skimming is reading for an overview of the material, to get a general idea of what the text is about. It helps the reader form a general opinion about the text. It’s a method of rapidly moving your eyes over the text to get only the main ideas and a general impression of the text. Skimming is the most rapid of all reading. It doesn’t require reading every word. It is a useful study technique for reading course books or reading for assignments. If students first skim through the chapter to get a general idea and then go back to read in detail, they will better understand it.
How to Skim:
* Read the title.
* Read the introduction or the first paragraph.
* Read the first sentence of every other paragraph.
* Read any headings and sub-headings.
* Notice any pictures, charts, or graphs.
* Notice any italicized or boldface words or phrases.
* Read the summary or last paragraph.

SKIMMING EXERCISE # 1:
Here is a reading passage. Read ONLY the first line of each paragraph. Do not read the whole paragraph. Then answer the questions at the end.

READING PASSAGE
Here I want to try to give you an answer to the question: What personal qualities are desirable in a teacher? Probably no two people would draw up exactly similar lists, but I think the following would be generally accepted.
First, the teacher's personality should be pleasantly live and attractive. This does not rule out people who are physically plain, or even ugly, because many such have great personal charm. But it does rule out such types as the over-excitable, melancholy, frigid, sarcastic, cynical, frustrated, and over-bearing : I would say too, that it excludes all of dull or purely negative personality. I still stick to…...

Tension Report

...Shear Box Report Abstract This repot describes the Shear Box test based on two types of soil that are loose soil and dense soil. The test has shown that the use of dry river sand under different densities to underestimate the shear strength parameters, the soil cohesion and the angle of friction with regard to the relationship between soil density and shear strength. Introduction The aim of the Shear box test was to determine the shear strength of sand using the shear box teat, and to investigate the effect of soil density on the strength. The shear strength of a soil is its resistance to shearing stresses. It is a measure of the soil resistance to deformation by continuous displacement of its individual soil particles. To investigate more about the behavior of the soil, a Mohr-coulomb theory has been introduced. This theory states that a material fails because of a critical combination of normal stress and shear stress, and not from their either maximum normal or shear stress alone. the limiting shear stress( the shear strength, t) that may be applied to any plane in the soil mass is found to be given by an equation of the form: τ = c + σ tan(φ) where σ = normal stress on the failure plane φ = angle of friction c = (apparent) cohesion The parameters C and φ are not generally soil constants. They also depended on the use of total or effective stresses. In terms of effective stress the failure criterion is written: τ = σ' tan(φ') + c' ...

Analytical Essay (Conjoined-Judith Minty

...onion as a monster, in my opinion, reflects what has become of her marriage and also paints a picture for the reader. It has become flat and deformed because she feels as though she is being smothered and so the end results of the marriage is a monster. The two people in the union try to join together as a unit but instead get stuck to each other and nothing good is formed. Metaphorically, the comparison between the two onions and the couple is ideal for the situation because just like the onion provides some form of defense for itself, so does each person in the relationship. In the second stanza of the poem Minty goes on to say that is it like “An accident, like the two headed calf rooted in one body, fighting to suck at its mother’s teats” (Minty lines 5-7). This particular line immediately paints a picture in the readers mind Minty makes reference to marriage as “An accident,” right away it becomes evident to readers that she does not view her marriage in a positive light. It was a mistake, something that had she known it would be like this, she probably would have avoided it. She also references it to a calf that has one body but two heads that fight to get milk to survive. This metaphor is representative of the single household that has two people who are fighting to be the head of the home. Inevitably, there is only one person who will be the main leader of the house but as a couple they should be pushing each other to do well. Minty’s comparison of the marriage to......

Here's a response in a letter from PATTY MYERS in Montana ... I think she is a little ticked off! She also tells it like it is! "Hey Alan, let's get a few things straight!!! 1. As a career politician, you have been on the public dole (tit) for FIFTY YEARS. 2. I have been paying Social Security taxes for 48 YEARS (since I was 15 years old. I am now 63). 3. My Social Security payments, and those of millions of other Americans, were safely tucked away in an interest bearing account for decades until you political pukes decided to raid the account and give OUR money to a bunch of zero losers in return for votes, thus bankrupting the system and turning Social Security into a Ponzi scheme that would make Bernie Madoff proud. 4. Recently, just like Lucy & Charlie Brown, you and "your ilk" pulled the proverbial football away from millions of American seniors nearing retirement and moved the goalposts for full retirement from age 65 to age, 67. NOW, you and your "shill commission" are proposing to move the goalposts YET AGAIN. 5. I, and millions of other Americans, have been paying into Medicare from Day One, and now "you morons" propose to change the rules of the game. Why? Because "you idiots" mismanaged other parts of the economy to such an extent that you need to steal our......

Sexual Violence

...Sexual Violence as a tool of genocide - Andrea Smith Here in this article, it is demonstrated that sexual violence as women creates genocides against their identities. It also a calling to the injustices of how women of color were targeted by white men. Native Americans were raped by white men who disguise themselves and themselves native men. Companies such as ivory soap was responsible to promote the Native Americans Indians as dirty and uncivilized. Yet sexual violence as racism is woven into our country, we can change it because it was socially constructed. Native Americans are being used as artifacts and put up into museums, yet we do not see white European figures in display. In order for anyone to teat anyone else differently, they must dehumanize their victims. Indians have begun hating them after all they have told many times and started believing other people words. Rape was used differently in different races. As for African Americans, they were rape to reproduce more slaves, but as for Indians women they were raped to take away their identities. Before Indians had contacted with Europeans, Indians did not practice war and if they did they did as a symbol to gain honor but their intentions were never to kill anyone. Women of color have been victimized everywhere, not only in the U.S. but also in South America and Mexico, they are viewed as a threat to the nation’s identity. Therefore, they are said to have earn that treatment because they were inherent. Before,......

...other goats. Unlike cattle, goats have not been successfully bred to be reliably polled, as the genes determining sex and those determining horns are closely linked. Breeding together two genetically polled goats results in a high number of intersex individuals among the offspring, which are typically sterile.[10] Their horns are made of living bone surrounded by keratin and otherproteins, and are used for defense, dominance, and territoriality.[11] Goats are ruminants. They have a four-chambered stomach consisting of the rumen, the reticulum, the omasum, and theabomasum. As with other mammal ruminants, they are even-toed ungulates. The females have an udder consisting of two teats, in contrast to cattle, which have four teats.[12] An exception to this is the Boer goat, which sometimes may have up to eight teats.[13][14][15] Goats have horizontal, slit-shaped pupils. Because goats' irises are usually pale, their contrasting pupils are much more noticeable than in animals such as cattle, deer, most horses and many sheep, whose similarly horizontal pupils blend into a dark iris and sclera. This adaptation allows goats to see at least 320 degrees around their heads with no blind spot in front of them.[citation needed] Goat tails versus sheep tails Both male and female goats have beards, and many types of goat (most commonly dairy goats, dairy-cross Boers, and pygmy goats) may have wattles, one dangling from each side of the neck.[16] Some breeds of sheep and goats look similar,......

...temperature and the circulatory system, including the four-chambered heart. Mammals include the largest animals on the planet, the rorquals and other large whales, as well as some of the most intelligent, such as elephants, primates, including humans, and cetaceans. The basic body type is a four-legged land-borne animal, but some mammals are adapted for life at sea, in the air, in trees, or on two legs. The largest group of mammals, the placentals, have a placenta, which enables feeding the fetus during gestation. Mammals range in size from the 30–40 mm (1.2–1.6 in) bumblebee bat to the 33-meter (108 ft) blue whale. The word "mammal" is modern, from the scientific name Mammalia coined by Carl Linnaeus in 1758, derived from the Latin mamma ("teat, pap"). All female mammals nurse their young with milk, which is secreted from special glands, the mammary glands. According to Mammal Species of the World, 5,416 species were known in 2006. These were grouped in 1,229 genera, 153 families and 29 orders.[1] In 2008 the IUCN completed a five-year, 1,700-scientist Global Mammal Assessment for its IUCN Red List, which counted 5,488 accepted species.[2] In some classifications, extant mammals are divided into two subclasses: the Prototheria, that is, the order Monotremata; and the Theria, or the infraclasses Metatheria and Eutheria. The marsupials constitute the crown group of the Metatheria, and include all living metatherians as well as many extinct ones; the placentals are the......
