Have you ever wondered where the English language originated from? What languages does English have its foundations in? English words have their roots in many different languages. Among them are Latin, German, and French. The French language in particular has had a great impact on American Standard English. Countless words and phrases in the English language that we use today have their seeds in French. The Norman invasion of England in 1066 was the beginning of the French impact on the English language. (Cactus World Wide Inc.). Norman French became the official language there for the next three centuries. During this time, Old English had almost disappeared, however, Norman French soon became Anglo-Norman as it had been impacted by English. This became known as the transition from Old English to Middle English. Over 10,000 French words found their way into the English language and over three-fourths of these words are still used today. (Cactus World Wide Inc.). Some of the most popular words and phrases borrowed from the French language are beef (from French boeuf), joy (from French ryjoui), and on the menu (from French à la carte). (About.com). About thirty percent of all English words come from French according to Wikipedia. Wikipedia also notes that there are around 80,000 English words taken from French. French colonization in North America spread rapidly in late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. During the French-Indian War, French was already quite popular in Colonial America and even in parts of Canada. ...Impact of Language Barriers on Immigrants to Canada BACKGROUND: Immigration Statistics Providing a statistical background on both immigration and language fluency is essential to understanding how large the scale of individuals facing these barriers is. There are approximately 250,000 immigrants to Canada each year. The majority of these immigrants to Canada come from Asia, the Middle East, the Caribbean, and Africa (Pottie, 2008). Immigration represents nearly 70% of the Canadian population growth. Even after four years of arriving in Canada, 26% of all new immigrants still faced language difficulties (not sure about ur whole ‘tense’ situation :P) in English or French (Pottie, 2007). According to Statistics Canada, the 2001 Census stated that 40% of immigrants aged 25-54 who came to Canada in the 1990s had a university degree (Statistics Canada, 2003). Nearly 70% of immigrants experience barriers in the Canadian labour market, despite the fact that 76% of these immigrants have at least one foreign international credential (Schugurensky, 2005). Well modern English I can speak, read, and understand. I was in the Navy for 12 years. My job in the navy was a Hospital Corpsman. It is funny because if they actually tried to read some Old English they would have a hard time making any words out. So the beginning of the English language is Old English and it was developed by people of the Germanic tribes migrated to Britain. This happened before the 12th century. It had a lot of Latin, French, and Old Norse influence. While if you read it you may figure out a few words it is very different from today’s spoken language. You would know such words as he, him, for and some others. You could figure out such words as name, was, were, and come, these are just some examples. When students first enroll, whether it is kindergarten or high school, the parents or guardians are required to fill out a home language survey. Based off the answers the parent/guardians provide determines if the student goes to central registration for testing. If the child is found to be of having more than one language they go for testing. The testing that the student goes through is the World –Class Instructional Design Assessment (WIDA). The WIDA method was adopted in 2008 for the entire state of Virginia. The WIDA is comprised of a series of tests ranging from spoken, written, and listening skills. The instructor who gives the test then gives the child a score on the range of one to six. These scores are directly correlated to the ELP Standards, (www.pwcs.edu/ESOL), our state has adopted. Once the WIDA is given, it gives the upcoming or current teachers a score in reading, writing, fluency, speaking, and listening. From those areas it also gives us a composite score.
