Understanding the “new normal” in Zimbabwe

The term ‘new normal’ is a term coined by Mohamed El-Erian, co-chief investment officer of Pimco, a California investment firm to refer to the situation the world found itself in after the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) of 2008-2010.
From a global perspective, this phenomenon has led to mixed fortunes on the economies of different countries. Characteristic of the ‘new normal’ is the remarkable gaining of economic influence of the East due to the growing shift in global economic activity from West to East. Emerging Markets (Ems) proved to be a force to reckon with due to the increased flow of capital between the (Ems) themselves and to industrial countries as well as due to the increase in their stake or share in the global output from 40% in 1990 to 50% and expected to grow to 60% by 2035.
The Global recession resulted in a deliberate greater government intervention in most countries to save respective banking systems from collapsing. As a result, there is a significant role to be played by governments in the economies of most countries which might have a negative impact of financial protectionism in some instances or lead to greater global financial coordination and transparency. In the ‘new normal’, the West has lost its ability to set the global agenda as seen in the transition from a G-7 to a Group of 20 which includes players in the Emerging Markets like Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Korea, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates .

Much as the ‘new normal’ had its effects on the global economies world over, its effects in Zimbabwe did not go unnoticed. The “new normal” in Zimbabwe was mainly characterised by political change, adoption of a multi-currency regime and the global recession.

Sunset Boulevard Points Norma Desmond

...her self-denial of the passing of her fame, Norma Desmond had also become rather sexual-transgressive. Some male traits shown in Norma consist of her dominance - she demands over Max, financial independence - owns factories which constantly makes profits and her assertive nature - she fearlessly confronts her passion for Joe. The way Norma is ridiculously insane to a degree of dark humour brings sympathy, entertainment and a corrupted depiction of celebrity to audiences. Her dramatic movements, superficial appearances and script-alike dialogues reveal this. This is an illustration the self-possessiveness of celebrities as a result of the illusions of fame. Joe Gillis, is a laconic character who interacts with Norma in a reciprocally dependent relationship. Without Gillis, Norma feels lifeless, loveless and powerless, she depends on him emotionally, Max, who is entirely devoted to Norma. He accepts reality however chooses to conform to Norma's insane world of delusions and even supports her - "Madame is the greatest star of them all." Norma is repeatedly filmed as a silhouette, which gives a feeling of eeriness as well as depicting perhaps the notion that Norma Desmond's fame is merely a silhouette, a shadow, an illusion. The angles in Sunset Boulevard positioned the audience to see Norma as an alienated character time and again filmed from a lower-angle view, with her standing on the top of a staircase. This alienation of Norma causes the audience to see celebrities......

Norma Rae Paper

...Norma Rae Labor Unions are an essential part of the work environment these days. Many companies and corporations deal with unions to better understand the employees wants and needs. In earlier years, unions were not as prevalent and popular with employers. Employees were scared to go rise up against the employer. As people became more aware of the positive affects on joining a labor union, many individuals bought into the union idea. The movie “Norma Rae” provides great examples to prove the facts issued on the AFL-CIO website. One of the main problems illustrated in the movie “Norma Rae” was the working conditions. The working conditions for Norma Rae and her coworkers at the textile factory were brutal. One of the characteristics I noticed about the working condition were the break rooms. The break rooms in the movie should be considered a closet space. The working conditions were also very dangerous and loud. During one of the opening scenes, Norma Rae’s mother loses her hearing because of the lack of protection from the employer (Ritt (Director), 1979, Norma Rae). The employers of Norma did not care about her and the other’s well-being during working hours. The employer only cared about productivity and numbers. The workers and Norma had very little breaks during the work day which is a horrible way to work. Many of the workers during the movie looked very run-down and overworked (Ritt (Director), 1979, Norma Rae). According to the AFL-CIO website, one of the main......

Norma Rae

...Nicole Kalgren Mrs. Candler Labor management (20919) Fall semester 2013 Norma Rae . Norma Rae Norma Rae is based on life story of Crystal Sutton and her connection with Ruben Warshovsky and the organization of the textile workers at the J.P. Stevens Company in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina (Labor Films). The movie was a realistic depiction of the sad, immoral, and domineering working conditions that existed in the looming life of mass production workers, and one woman’s struggle to overcome and progress the labor relation problems at a textile mill during the 1970's. The textile workers were unsatisfied with many aspects of their capitalistic working environment. They fought to form a union so that they could change the unwelcome characteristics to better meet their needs. Political, environmental, and cultural processes all played a part in the workers struggle to form an effective union. Norma Rae, a loom operator in the weaving room is an outspoken individual and is very out spoken about her poor working conditions such as excessive noise, long hours with short breaks, physical stress from standing for long periods and abnormally high temperatures in the work areas. Added to all this is managements apathy for the working conditions, as seen when her mother looses her hearing temporarily with little or no sentiment from the company doctor, who knows this is a common problem for the workers. With this setting, the film progresses through most of the stages for...

Leadership in Norma Rae

...Leadership in "Norma Rae" "Norma Rae" is a film based on a true story set in a Southern mill-town. The title character and fellow mill workers start a branch of the Textile Workers Union of America through the use of leadership. The two characters of Norma Rae and Reuben Warshofsky combine their talents to empower and lead the people of the mill from downtrodden workers to proactive union members. When Rueben first comes upon the town, he finds the managers of the mill oppressive to their workers. People have no rights. They make small wages. They work long hours. Rueben starts the revolution for the mill workers by inspiring Norma Rae through Superleadership. Norma Rae in turn empowers and motivates the mill workers to attain their common goal: a union. Superleadership occurs when a leader leads others to lead themselves. Superleadership is appropriate for Reuben Warshofsky because it applies well to organizational leaders. Reuben is a representative of the Textile Workers Union of America. He came to Norma Rae's town to start a union at her mill. For his job to succeed, Reuben needs to be able to start the call for union, and leave the area confident that the cause is in good hands. Superleadership is designed to facilitate the leader within every individual. A leader who exercises Superleadership is not necessarily a "charismatic" leader. He may have a set vision and great oratory skills, but he does not lead to be followed or obeyed. He leads so that others can lead......

Mr Eccles claimed that Wrigleys would relish the prospect of increased competition, stating “If you’re running a race, running it on your own is actually no fun.” 4433 [Turn over 13 According to the latest market figures, Trident is taking a 12.5% share of the market, leaving Wrigley with a dominant 86.3% share. The good news for both companies is that the total chewing gum industry is up almost 20% on this time last year and Wrigley itself has increased its sales by 5%, with new products such as “Orbit Complete”. 14 Both companies have been striving to differentiate themselves. Cadbury wants to stress how it is bringing its confectionery experience to the chewing gum market. A company spokesperson declared, “Pleasure and indulgence is what we know best.” Wrigley is anxious not to be painted as the functional alternative to the indulgence of Cadbury, but nevertheless has set up a research programme under the title, “The Wrigley Science Institute”. Based in Chicago, it sponsors research at universities around the world, looking for health benefits of chewing gum. So far, they have established that chewing gum can help reduce tooth......

...In some cases, in addition to risk reductions and process safety improvements, RBI plans may result in cost reductions. RBI is based on sound, proven risk assessment and management principles. Nonetheless, RBI will not compensate for: c) inaccurate or missing information, d) inadequate designs or faulty equipment installation, e) operating outside the acceptable IOWs, f) not effectively executing the plans, g) lack of qualified personnel or teamwork, h) lack of sound engineering or operational judgment. 1.3 Using RBI as a Continuous Improvement Tool Utilization of RBI provides a vehicle for continuously improving the inspection of facilities and systematically reducing the risk associated with pressure boundary failures. As new data (such as inspection results and industry experiences with similar processes) becomes available or when changes occur (e.g. operating conditions), reassessment of the RBI program can be made that will provide a refreshed view of the risks.
