...is playing peekaboo with the clouds,” I told my mother, squeezing her hand and squinting at the temperamental sky. It was my first metaphor, although I was unaware of it at the time; I was three years old. Even before I could read, I harbored a natural affinity for the English language, picking up new words easily and using them in unexpected ways. I would string them together like beads on a necklace, carefully selecting and rearranging them for the most ear-pleasing sentence. For me, words were more than a way to communicate - they were a form of art. As I delved into the written word I began to recognize writing as a powerful tool for expression. I turned to poetry and short stories to capture childhood moments, expanding my vocabulary and becoming skilled at transferring raw emotions and ideas onto paper. My parents encouraged me to make frequent trips to the library, and I often staggered home beneath the weight of a pile of novels. When I entered high school as a published author and poet, my writing continued to mature. Although I still marveled at the versatility of language, I now wielded my pen with a more defined sense of purpose. I understood that words could be used for more than the aesthetic appeal that got me through my English essays. They could be used to educate, to inform, and to spread awareness. By junior year, I had transitioned to journalistic writing, and then to more specialized exposition for my advanced science and history classes. I......

...consists of an inertial mass that moves in relation to the instrument frame and a method to measure the motion of the mass in relation to the frame. Ground motion causes the instrument frame to move. The motion between the frame and the mass is measured in order to detect and record the ground movements. Modern seismometers consist of a negative feedback loop that applies a magnetic or electrostatic field to resist the motion of the inertial mass. The seismometer outputs the voltage equivalent of the force required to resist the motion of the mass. The advancements in technology have led to the creation of modern earthquake-detecting instruments, which use electronic sensors and amplifiers. They cover a broad frequency range. Devices of the modern times are highly sensitive to ground movements. Teleseismometers, which cover a wide range of frequencies and strong-motion seismometers using the digital technology, are some of the latest instruments used to detect earthquakes. Earthquake detection systems can only help us forewarn of a possible earthquake by enabling early detection and near-accurate measurement of its intensity. EFFECTS OF EARTHQUAKE. Effect on Human Life The cause of an earthquake seems only natural, however, the biggest loss an earthquake creates is the loss of human life. With colossal damage of buildings, roads, bridges and floods creates destabilization of human life. For instance, the Tsunami which hit the Indian ocean in 2004, killed 230,000 and......

The List

...The List Story by 10/16/2013 I find myself on the ledge of a building with two of his thugs grabbing me. I think to myself how did I get here? Should I have done what I did? Is this the end? I should start from the beginning. I grew up in a wealthy house hold. My father was well known for breakthroughs in the technology field. He was working on many projects but the one that made him a multi-millionaire was the work in self-sustaining energy. When I was eighteen, my father and I went on a trip to China, a trip that would change our lives forever. It was a pretty quiet plane ride. Dad was working on his laptop and I was listening to music. I noticed there was a very bad storm out of the window. The plane was shaking. Suddenly the lights went out and the oxygen masks deployed. Something hit my head. The next thing I know we are in the water and my dad is yelling my name. I see him in the distance swimming towards me. He gets to me and gives me his life vest. He tells me that I have to survive, that his company isn’t what I thought it was. He gives me a book with a list of names and tells me that everyone on that list has done terrible things to stay rich, and that he is no different. He told me stories of how he and the people on this list got wealthy by stepping on the necks of the poor. That he has had people hurt or killed to keep his company on top. He stayed with me as long as he could but as time went by he got weaker. He couldn’t......

How much of the world’s global greenhouse gases are the result of computing? List several factors that will tend to retard or accelerate data center power consumption both globally and in the United States. The total amount of global greenhouse gases is 2%. Factors that can accelerate the global greenhouse gases: * Cloud computing * Advancements in IT * Audio and Video streaming Factors that can reduce the global greenhouse gases: * Create a virtual rather than an actual version of something also known 1as virtualization. * Air management * Distributing data center worldwide * The use of chillers 4. Where do you suspect that data-center power consumption will be greatest: developing and emerging economies or already developed economies? Why? 5. Imagine that a company has developed an advanced technology that allows it to reduce its data-center requirements by an unprecedented amount, and creates a competitive advantage for the company in the data-center market. Why should it share that technology with other data-center firms? If this firm does not share its techniques, the rest of the industry will continue to operate less efficient centers, and increase global emissions of greenhouse gases above what they would otherwise be. 6. Should the government or......
